And it just feels like more and more people are taking the leap into living an alcohol-free life. But why is this happening? Are people really drinking less, or is something else going on? I tried everything AA meetings, therapy, begging God to help me, reading books, but something kept taking me back to the drink. But for the past eight years, I've had no desire. Changing Environment To Stay Sober
SPEAKER_00in England. So I'm an Englishman, but after a few months of stopping drinking alcohol, I ended up booking a one-way flight to Thailand. So I changed my environment very early on when I first stopped drinking. And upon returning, I've only been a few times since stopping drinking, but I've just got back from a trip, and that's when it hit me. That's when I realized why everybody's stopping drinking.
The Twist: People Aren’t Quitting
SPEAKER_00Because they ain't. So when I used to drink alcohol, I was around a lot of people that obviously drank. See, a lot of times I would pick social events, I would pick certain friends, I'd even pick a line of work where I knew people drank. I went to work in London in recruitment because I knew that that was a very boozy kind of atmosphere. And eight years ago, I thought that nobody didn't drink. I thought everybody drank alcohol. If you'd have asked me to put money down on the fact that 99% of people drink alcohol, I'd have put it down. I knew a handful of people that didn't drink. And if I met people that didn't drink alcohol, I'd be a bit suspicious. I'd I'd think maybe you were some recovering alcoholic or you did it for religious reasons. I I wouldn't think
How Your Attention Shapes Reality
SPEAKER_00that you were normal. But I stopped drinking just under eight years ago, and within a few months, I stopped seeing people that drank. And it was replaced. I everybody around me, all of a sudden, was interested in business, in making content, in fitness, in health, in CrossFit, in powerlifting. I met people with families, with wives, with husbands, with children, and nobody seemed to drink anymore. And I couldn't work it out. And then I'd go on the internet and the same thing would happen. I'd look on these in Facebook and I'd look on YouTube and Instagram, and all of a sudden, I could see so many people who didn't drink. And you may have experienced something similar. You might not have stopped drinking yet, but you might just be seeing more and more people who don't drink. And you know what? If this is happening, it's not that more people are stopping drinking. I'm sure that there are some notable people and loud people that are stopping drinking, but I promise you, those people were there 10 years ago. They were there five years ago, they were there 30 years ago. All that's happened is that you've tuned in to what's going on. Like I said, when I was drinking, if I met people that didn't drink, like it just didn't go into my conscious brain. I'd brush it off, I'd almost think they were lying, and I just didn't have this worldview where people were sober. But then when I stopped drinking alcohol, or maybe for you, you're just being more aware of this, I started seeing so many sober people. And if you're noticing this, it's an amazing thing. Because whilst you might not have stopped, you might have stopped, whatever it is that you're doing, you're collecting reference points. You're collecting a database in your mind of people that you know and that you've interacted with or you've seen online. You're collecting this database of people who don't drink.
Building Proof Of Good Sober Lives
SPEAKER_00And one of the best things about the internet and about media and people sharing their stories of not drinking alcohol is that in your local area, these people might not be there. I was very lucky when I stopped drinking alcohol. I left England where I was in Oxford and I moved to Thailand and I got around people that were entrepreneurs. So naturally, less people drank, but then I also stopped looking online and I kept finding people. And all that was happening throughout this process is I was building these new reference points of people who were living good lives and didn't drink. Because when I drank, I had this idea that successful, happy, healthy people also drank. And I used to glamorize this. I used to want to be like them. And I had to find evidence that this was not the case. And if this is happening to you, it's a great thing. It's amazing. It just means that you're on the right path. Whether you've stopped or not, you're moving in the right direction.
