Roger Hoover, a multi-skilled broadcaster across many sports, joins me for this episode. Roger works for SEC Network Plus, calling select basketball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, gymnastics and softball on the network, which is on the ESPN App. He has also been the radio play-by-play announcer for the University of Alabama women’s basketball team for the last six years while filling in on the men’s side as well.

In addition to his fine work in collegiate athletics, Roger is a veteran minor league baseball play-by-play broadcaster. He started out in 2008 with the Kingsport Mets of the advanced-rookie Appalachian League before moving on to the Double-A Southern League where he spent 2009 and 2010 with the Tennessee Smokies, the Chicago Cubs affiliate. He then migrated to Jacksonville in 2011 to become the voice of the Suns, the Marlins affiliate also in the Southern League. Roger called games in Jacksonville for nine seasons, coinciding with a rebrand following the 2016 season when the Suns became the Jumbo Shrimp.

Despite the outlook for a college football season in 2020 looking bleak, Roger is hoping the Power 5 conferences can pull through and salvage somewhat of a schedule. Congratulations are in order to Roger and his fiancé Lanzi, who are getting married this September. Towards the end we chat about the challenges of planning a wedding during a pandemic.
