In the third episode of the Euro Health podcast speaks Theodora Calinescu, Project Manager at the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC). Are we successful in reducing the number of deaths on EU roads? Theodora Calinescu says Europe's roads are among the safest and the results have been steadily improving over the last 20 years, but the safety difference between EU Member states is wide. They can be described by the different approaches of a country depending on its road safety tradition. What are the measures to prevent accidents, do new technologies such as the self-driving car have the potential to improve road safety, or do they may, on the contrary, cause harm? What are the statistics on deaths on the roads and serious injuries on European roads in recent years? How have traffic restrictions during the coronavirus pandemic affected accident rates? Theodora Calinescu is a Project Manager at the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC). She is a Romanian national who joined the ETSC team in 2016 and manages EU Road Safety Exchange, an EU-funded project that aims to tackle road safety disparities among EU Member States. She previously worked for The International Association of Public Transport (UITP) and the European Committee of the Regions in Brussels. The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) is a Brussels-based independent non-profit making organization dedicated to reducing the number of deaths and injuries in transport in Europe. ETSC provides an impartial source of expert advice on transport safety matters to the European Commission, the European Parliament, and national governments.
