For the 12th and final episode of the 2nd season of the Euro Health Podcast, we invited Dr. Charlotte De Kock, postdoctoral researcher at Ghent University, who specializes in drug treatment for people with a migrant background in Belgium and the European Union.

Focusing on drug policy, we opened the discussion on the impact of recent international crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine on mental health and substance abuse.

Mental health and substance use disorders are co-occuring phenomena, which primarily affects groups in situation of socio-economic and psychological vulnerability, such as displaced populations. Together with Dr. De Kock, we enquired as to the prevalence of substance use among migrants and asylum seekers.

How are these groups affected by such disorders? What is the role of the EMCDDA in terms of prevention and treatment, specifically for people with a migrant background? What is the contribution of the scientific in introducing or strengthening policies for prevention and treatment of substance abuse for vulnerable people? Dr. Charlotte De Kock (PhD) is a Belgian postdoctoral researcher at Ghent University, Belgium. She conducts fundamental and policy-supporting research into the accessibility of drug treatment for people with a migration background in Belgium and Europe. She collaborated with, among others, the European Drugs Agency (EMCDDA) on migration related topics. Dr. De Kock is chair of the Diversity Committee of the Faculty of Law & Criminology, research representative in the faculty board, and board member of the European Xchange Prevention Platform (EMCDDA).
