Welcome to Bible Insights with Wayne Conrad. God's word is a lamp to our feet and a light on our path. Today's topic, a great deliverance for answered prayer.
My friend and I were in quite a situation just yesterday. One reason I did not make the podcast on time, We had gone to a doctor's appointment and the car that we're traveling in, which happens to be my van, which is a 2010 Dodge Caravan that has been modified for handicap access with a side ramp so that my power chair can ride up into it and then turn around and be in the passenger side.
And so, we're in this vehicle, which is necessary for my transportation to and from any place. And the car at the very beginning has a sort of a sound that I'm not used to and I don't like. And my friend, who's Jeff, and you'll hear his voice in a minute, he thought that it wasn't really anything to worry about. I was concerned that we might be too low on gas or it might be the tires, et cetera. But he sort of had assurance or felt it was okay. Isn't that right, Jeff?
That's right. And so, we then proceeded on to the doctor's appointment, which is quite a ways. And it's a little complicated to get to the doctor's office. And so, we had to enter on the side road of 635 to make a turnaround and come back to the doctor's office. And if I'm not mistaken, this is the first time that the car died. We're in the turn kind of lane underneath the bridge and the car just quit. That was it.
But Jeff, you just restarted the car, and it helped. And we proceeded with tribulation on to the doctor's appointment. And about two hours later, when we're coming out from that appointment, We take a different route because of the way the road was going, and we were traveling down, I think it's called T.I. Boulevard, and we come to the intersection of T.I. Boulevard and Forest, and we again get into the lane so that we can make the turn when the light turns.
But as we're entering the lane, the car dies again. How did it sound, Jeff? Well, it just quit and I tried to restart it two or three times, and it just would not restart, and I knew we were dead in the water there. So this sent up a few little alarms because if the car is not able to go, we can have the car towed, which is our first effort. Okay, we need to call AAA and arrange for a tow.
But when we call them, they're willing to send the tow, but when Jeff told them that I'm in a power chair and I can't walk or stand and can't be transferred to another vehicle within their truck. Could I ride in my vehicle in the car that's being towed? And they told you no, right? I said no, absolutely no. It's illegal.
Okay, so then we took next steps. We called the police department to see if anyone could assist us. And they said, we don't do that service, which was sort of a little paradoxical to us. Here they are for public safety and, you know, to serve the public and here's a public in need. I know it's not a crime, but they shouldn't be only responsive to crimes. But at any rate, that's another story. So, the answer is no.
So, then the other, of course, is DART, Dallas Area Transit. And again, I never needed to register with them because I bought a van in 2014, this van that was used, and it's been taking me wherever I need to go. So, we call them, but because I'm not registered and I don't use the DART, they can't help. So, they say they can't help. Jeff, you asked for the supervisor, right? The manager. And she said, well, she said no deal, really. She said, you're out of our service area. We don't know if that's exactly true or what. At any rate, everywhere we turned that we knew of, the answer is, we can't help you. Now, we're in a sort of an impossible situation. I can't simply drive out of my vehicle onto the road and wait around while someone takes my car off and I'm left there, et cetera. That's not gonna work.
So, we, actually, we started with prayer, but at this point, Jeff said, what'd you say, Jeff? He said, let's pray. And so, we pray for God to help us, for God to deliver us. That's right. It brings to mind various scriptures. And one of the scriptures, the scripture that Jeff has for this situation is Psalm 18.6. How does that read, Jeff?
Psalm 18.6 reads like this. This is a Psalm of David, King David. In my distress, I called upon Yahweh, to my God, I cried for help. From his temple, he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears. And very interesting, in 2 Samuel 22.7, that exact prayer is being offered up. And he says, in my distress, I called upon the Lord, to my God I called. And from his temple he heard my voice and my cry came to his ear." How graphic.
And there we are in our van in a situation which we have in the lights flashing, the cars are coming on the other side. Luckily it wasn't a really heavy traffic area, and we can't move and people begin to come behind us, but they can't move because we're unable to move. We put the flashers on. and Jeff is making all these calls, and he's talking to these people, and we have a lady to knock on our window, who is behind us, and she said to Jeff, she said, hello, do you need some help? And I briefly explained the situation, and she said, well, you know, I'm a professional healthcare worker, and I'm very familiar with how to use haul your lifts and transferring people, so can I help you, please?
But we didn't have a horse with us and I never ride in another vehicle because I'm in my power chair. We didn't know actually see how she could physically by herself. Nevertheless, I unload and we move the vehicle down toward her car. Meanwhile, Rochelle is her name, and God bless you Rochelle, she moves a little bit to the lane of the traffic to hail a car, and the car stopped. and this man came out of the car. He was very willing to help. His name was Isaiah. Thank you, Isaiah. He's from the Grove Church where he's a youth pastor. We found out from talking to these people, God sent these two people who have respect for him to help us in our distress.
And so, with Isaiah's help and Rochelle's help, I was transferred into the car. Now, when Jeff had called the tow company and they said they couldn't tow us with me in the car, they wanted to know whether they should send it out. Jeff told them to hold off. And when I got, when he could handle my situation, he called them back. But evidently, that did not translate, because lo and behold, they sent a tow truck. And right after I get transferred into Rochelle's vehicle, her car, there is the tow truck waiting for the tow. And Jim, what happened? Well, he put his truck in place in front of the car and began to pull it up on the vehicle and his name is Amit. So, he did that, I got in the cab and waited for him to get completed and then we took off. And so, two different vehicles, I'm traveling with Rochelle, who's bringing me home, and Jeff is with Ahmed in the tow truck, and he's talking and conversing with him, and I'm talking a little bit with Rochelle and conversing with her, and we're going to our two destinations.
He was gonna take the vehicle to our mechanic that lives not far from my house, it's called Mike's Tires on Ferguson Road, and we live on Honeycutt, and so Rochelle comes to the house in front of Honeycutt. I give her a key to the house so she can go in, turn off the fire alarm, and watch for the dog so that the dog come out. And she wasn't concerned about the dog. She knew how to handle these situations. And I saw her go into the house, disappear, and then she was to bring out my other poor power chair that's just about totally gone, but it still runs a little, if you can control it, and she brings it down toward the vehicle.
And meanwhile, she's done that, but we don't know how she can get me out of her vehicle into the power chair. It's really more than what one person can handle. I used to be a very skinny guy, sitting for many years now. You know, that's past history. At any rate, she again goes out to the road, and she knows she needs to help. So, she just hails someone down. She just puts her arms across, and she stands in the street. And when the car slows down, she lowers her hand. She goes and asks, tells them the situation. The guy got out of the car, come over to help us. Just like that. Every time she asked for help, The first person would stop, they came out and came to help.
And so, we're trying to figure out exactly how to do this, he and her, with my help, and we didn't know whether we were gonna be able to make it or not. But then, as we're trying to deal with this and calling upon the Lord, I'm calling upon the Lord silently, the Lord helped. Maybe Jeff would show up that moment, you know, because he's not too far away. But the fire engines pull up with their lights going because they had received a call that our house had smoke coming out of it. They had alarms arriving because of a smoke alarm. Well, we explained the situation to him that she'd gone in and evidently the alarm did not go off in time, get discharged in time. They called and as far as I knew, we didn't have a fire. They said this, okay, they would check. And meanwhile, here's our distress and these three men very. kindly and professionally lifting me out of the car without hurting my leg and my arm and put me into the power chair.
So, I move on into the house, they check the house and there's no fire and no smoke, but they were there just to the length of time.
The reason for us telling this story, because I want to emphasize to you To all who hear this, of God's kind and gracious providence for us, for me and for Jeff, in our distress, a very, it could be a bad, bad situation, but here God has delivered us and every time we needed the help, Right afterwards, even though the others said no, no, no, God sent someone who said yes, yes, yes. And so in our distress, we called upon Yahweh, our God. We asked for his help. And from his temple, he heard our voice. Our cry came to his ears and he delivered us from the trouble that we're in.
Now my vehicle, a Dodge Caravan 2010, is in a difficult situation. We've determined it is an electrical problem; a computer may have to be replaced, we don't know. Now we're in another shop with it, waiting for what will happen. All these things were very expensive for a person who's handicapped and who's retired, and both of us are retired. But you know, God will take care of everything. We simply have to wait upon him. and he will answer in his way at his time. But praise God on this day, in our day of trouble, he delivered us and we want to glorify him. That's what Psalm 50 says. Call upon me in the day of trouble. I will deliver you and you shall glorify me. That's our responsibility and our joy. to praise and glorify God for being the God who delivers us and to thank Him for the instruments He used, whether they have a personal relationship with Him or not. They may have, some did, some didn't, but God used them to deliver us. They became His instruments of mercy and compassion and help to us. And we thank God for them and to them we say thanks.
And here's our word to you. Call upon the Lord in your distresses, especially if you have your faith in Him and in our Lord Jesus Christ. Call upon Him and He will answer you.
Stephanie Craig, a dear friend of ours who used to be in our church years ago, in response to the video that we put up on YouTube about this, responded with these words, praise the Lord for his quick and careful deliverance of both of you and your vehicle to safety. Thank you for taking the time to share how intricately and graciously the Lord provided for you yesterday and how he moved the hearts of people to respond immediately to your needs. So right there, right on time at the moment we needed them. I'm saying that, not her, but praise him, she says, for sending just the right people at just the right times.
And praise God, because Pastor Jeff took the time to share Christ with two people when we came to the home. One was a follower of Islam, and Jeff had shared with him about the fact that Christ Jesus died for the sins of people so that we could be forgiven Muhammad didn't do that. Christ Jesus was raised from the dead to show that we are justified before God and that he had made the all-sufficient atonement for our sins. Muhammad, Confucius, Buddha, name it, no other religious founder, prophet, or teacher has done what our Lord Jesus Christ has done. And both of these people who helped us when offered to have a Bible to read about Christ, the man from the tow truck said, yes, he wanted one. And Jeff got one. And then Rochelle, she wanted one too. And so, we gave one to her. And she knows something about God and Christ and has been involved in the church. We just thank these people and we praise the Lord.
Psalm 105, Stephanie sent to us, Psalm 34, I'm sorry. Psalm 34 says, came to her mind as she was hearing us share this on YouTube. And these were the verses. Even to the details, she says, of Brother Wayne being carefully and gently escorted inside.
I will bless the Lord, that's Yahweh, at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make its boast in the Lord, in Yahweh. The humble shall hear of it. and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me. Magnify Yahweh with me and let us exalt his name together. I sought the Lord and he heard me and he delivered me from all my fears. They looked to him and were radiant and their faces were not ashamed. This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all of his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear him and delivers him. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good, and blessed is the man who trusts in him. Praise the Lord. You know, one thing, when this situation came up, I was surprisingly never really, I wasn't in any kind of panic state. Somehow, I felt that some way, God would take care of it.
Meanwhile, as Jeff says, he was trying not to panic, But I wanted to get home. You see, we have a Bible study on Tuesday night. And I didn't want the Bible study to be canceled because we read the Word together for about an hour, hour and a half, and we discuss it. We're just reading the Word of God. We just finished reading through Acts. And this night we were going to decide by sampling the passages that had been suggested by the group of which one God would lead us to next.
So, I didn't want to miss that. We have a great time of fellowship. We eat together physically, and then we eat together of the word of God. And I never want to miss the opportunity to teach and to preach God's living word to people. That is my prayer. That's why I ask God to keep me going is so that I can keep sharing his word and glorifying his name.
Thank you for taking the time to listen to this testimony and to these verses of scripture. And it's our joint prayer that you, in your time of distress, in your time of trouble, we heed these words that God has given us to call upon him in our distress, to call upon him in the day of trouble, and He will deliver us.
