SPEAKER_00Welcome to who watches the podcast. We watch a film, chat about the film, and then we try and figure out who would watch this.
SPEAKER_01Today we're talking about Barbie in the Nutcracker, which currently has two few reviews for a Rotten Tomato score.
SPEAKER_00But surely if those four could speak and had a voice, they were negative. Okay, never mind.
SPEAKER_01It also has a 6.4 on IMDB and a 3.5 on Letterboxd, which is staggeringly high.
SPEAKER_00It's very high, it's very high. It might be almost higher rated than the Barbie movie. So good for that. Good for them. Good for Mattel. They win everywhere. That's the power of Mattel. The plot, Carl, very simple. It's the Nutcracker, but Barbie fight. Thank God. Yeah, we all know the Nutcracker plot, so I won't I won't bother bogging you down with that.
SPEAKER_01Well, do we? Because I've got an exciting reveal.
SPEAKER_00Oh, VK's huge.
SPEAKER_01I think. Well, look, so usually we'd go back in time to before we'd seen the movie when we try to predict who we thought would watch this, but we haven't done that. No. Because what's happened? Tim Curry's passed away. Tim Curry's passed away. And I think we're both pretty big Tim Curry fans. Of course. Of course. And you were like, he's great in this. Yeah. I'd never seen us.
SPEAKER_00I saw I got a clip today because everyone was posting like Tim Curry bits and being like he was great in the rat king, and Barbie went, fuck off. Is he that? Damn. I feel like we'd been we've been wanting to do a Barbie for a hot minute again. Uh, and it's just easy. You can't say no.
SPEAKER_01You can't say no. They're a great well. Yeah. That's a good well to just keep going back to. When we don't know what to do, you go to Bobby Well.
SPEAKER_00What's your big reveal? What do you done?
SPEAKER_01Well, because I think when this was beginning, I was like, oh, I've never seen a version of the Nutcracker. Huge. So I uh experienced the Nutcracker for the first time through the Barbie movie. So we'd both seen, I think, a little bit of the middle of the Nutcracker 3D when we're in Vietnam that one time on TV. That was my only frame of reference. Yeah, huge.
SPEAKER_00I I when I did the bit that I don't know, because I actually don't know the plot of the nutcracker. That was a whole ja So in my mind, a lot of the Barbie stuff completely true. Yeah. So I don't know where the rating could not be Barbie.
SPEAKER_01Well, I took all of this as fact.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Many people did. Many people did, you know. Yeah. So in terms of like, this was the first time realizing where like the music is placed.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I had no idea. It's a very odd thing because the film it looks like it does a 2001 straight to DVD uh movie, but then you have a score, you're like, man, the score's kind of hitting. The score's kind of beautiful.
SPEAKER_01There was like the big famous score, and I was just like, wow, I did not know that this was in an Apple orchid.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, there's a couple things. You kind of go, wow, it's kind of beautiful. It's crazy, because I don't know how strong the plot is, but there's like three songs here. You go, they're pretty iconic. They're really still that's a good hit rate, you know. They're really good. Wicked has like two.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I didn't even one of them I didn't even know was from the Narcracker. Yeah, right. I just thought it was from Christmas films. Right? And I was like, oh, that makes sense.
SPEAKER_00If you need people that are in a hurry, you play this song, turns out it's from Swan.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. Well, it's the opening to Home Alone, isn't it? Family Stone as well. Oh, really? That's why I was like, oh, it's the Family Stone song. But you had seen it before.
SPEAKER_00I've seen it literally, I'd say a billion times.
SPEAKER_01Is this your choice or like a family choice, your sister's choice?
SPEAKER_00We have the VDCR at home. So in a sense, it's no one's choice. It's kind of a beautiful commune thing that this is just on, sort of like at an RSL, you just have or like a skate shop, you just have people skating. In my house, it was this just on repeat.
SPEAKER_01In comparison to Princess and the paupa, what was the more popular one in your household?
SPEAKER_00The the the Princess and the paupa. The paintbrush thing slapped. This one, this one's uh a bit of a you know, once you hit the classics of a paintbrush, really, you know, it's gonna be the basics.
SPEAKER_01This one has a lot of imagination to it. Because I assume it's all original material.
SPEAKER_00That's do it now. That's I've never heard you say that for any other film. What do you mean it has a lot of imagination in it? That's crazy.
SPEAKER_01What does that mean? We'll be talking about it, but there's a character in it that I adored. I absolutely adored a character in this film. So I can't talk about it.
SPEAKER_00Okay, do anything else context-wise, or we just get into it.
SPEAKER_01No, other than I think, just so people know, I the only one I've still seen is Barbie Princess and the pauper.
SPEAKER_00We've done another one? No, we did, we've done, we've done two. We've done the Princess of the Paupa and the Paintbrush one. They might be the same. In my mind, there's a s there's Goffel. Do you remember Goffel? That evil that woman? Which one do you remember doing?
SPEAKER_01I don't know. Martin Short was in one we watched.
SPEAKER_00We've done two. So we've done the Run. Really? Maybe we've done it on the podcast. We should do the one with the evil uh the Rapunzel. We don't have Rapunzel.
SPEAKER_01Oh, we've done Rapunzel and Princess and the Fourth Bob. Okay, great. Yeah, no problem. They're the key ones. So this is my third outing in the Barbie world. I would say this is probably my fourth. So it was just interesting to be getting some lore because things were sort of happening, and I was just like, those are the same kids from the last one.
SPEAKER_00There you go. I think it's more of a budgetary constraint rather than a character choice of the Barbie universe.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. I gotta tell you, I sort of had like a very nostalgic. Yeah, I don't know, I was kind of blown away. But we could get into it now. So, you know, we can do the usual graphic under sound effect that goes here. Yeah, for sure. If there is one. I don't know, I don't watch this show.
SPEAKER_00No, no one would. Let's get into it at the start. We get a title crawl with two fairies hanging about.
SPEAKER_01Oh, so this this to me was a lot of fun because immediately I went, oh, forgot how ugly these character designs are. These are foul. I don't want to sit for a whole movie of this. Pretty gross, pretty gross. Oh my god, just terrible.
SPEAKER_00The children in these look disgusting. They do look like they are like a little baby doll stretched up to be ten, and it's always disgusting.
SPEAKER_01And I assume the animator has actually seen like a dead body's eyes. It's just been like, no, this is how they're this is how they're meant to look lifeless. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You go, ah, to put it on a weird stretched baby doll body, it really is haunting.
SPEAKER_00It's a powerful way to start the film, and that is how the the uh the musical does begin. Yeah. Not cracked. Well, I'm not surprised. Yeah, a lifeless corpse of a child sort of is uh hung up by strings and sort of floated around the stage. And it's just beautiful. It really sets the tone for the rest of the thing. What can't what can't Trikov Tchukovsky do?
SPEAKER_01What can't he do? I mean, they tried.
SPEAKER_00It was the limit. Um let's get into it.
