After briefly considering a career in farming, Garth joined the business in 1959, making tea for the company accountant.
Garth went on to have an almost 60-year career, working alongside three generations of Thompsons to make Barfoot & Thompson what it is today. Retiring in 2017 to start a new career as an international triathlete, Garth has shown the same tenacity, ambition and competitive spirit that brought him considerable success in his business career.
The travel restrictions of 2020 provided an opportunity for me to catch Garth in Auckland for long enough to reflect on his business and sporting career.
