Safe and at Rest in the Judgement
Throughout God’s love story the Bible there are instances where God’s divine judgement has come upon the earth. In the midst of judgement there are those who have chosen to receive God’s salvation and protection. Therefore they are safe and at rest in the judgement.
Let us journey through God’s love story the Bible and look at three instances of divine judgement upon on the earth. These three are the judgement of the evil of humanity, the judgement of the gods of Egypt and the final judgement that is yet to take place.
The first two instances of divine judgement that we will look at were in a specific time and purpose in humanity’s history. The final judgement that is yet to take place will be a universal judgment of the living and the dead throughout the ages.
So let us begin with the first instance of divine judgement. This is recorded in the book of Genesis. It was back in the days of old. When the Eternal One looked on His once perfect creation and was grieved deep in His heart.
The Eternal One was grieved deep in His heart because humanity had chose to reject Him and instead choose be one with evil. As a result humanity chose a pathway of evil, decadence and destruction. Consumed by evil, every thought and intent of humanity was only evil. As a result the whole earth was corrupt.
Having chosen to be one with evil, humanity now had their identity in only evil. Instead of how they were originally created to be, one with only good. For the Eternal One created humanity in His own image and He is the one who is only good.
Yet in amongst one of the darkest times of humanity, there was one man who chose the Eternal One. Having chosen the Eternal One, his identity was in the Eternal One, one with only good. Just how he was originally created to be. He therefore was a just man who worshipped the Eternal One, the one true God. His name was Noah.
Noah walked with the Eternal One and found grace in His eyes. A grace that is freely available to all humanity. Yet in this time of human history only Noah and his family chose to receive the Eternal One.
So the Eternal One shared His grieving heart with Noah and made a covenant with him. To Noah he said for him to make an ark. An ark for himself, for the time has come for judgement to be upon the face of the earth. For having chosen to be aligned with evil instead of the Eternal One, humanity will come under judgement of evil. For the Eternal One is only good and must bring judgement to evil. The earth had been filled with violence and injustice. Therefore the Eternal One will bring His judgment of evil upon the earth through floodwaters. The floodwaters were to be so great that they will destroy all the flesh that breathes the breath of life. In fact every living thing upon the earth shall die, said the Eternal One.
The Eternal One continued to share His heart with Noah. He gave Noah the blueprint for the building of the ark. The Eternal One instructed Noah to bring into the ark everything that what was needed to live. Once Noah, his family and the animals were safe in the ark, it was time.
Judgement of evil upon the earth took place. On that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up and the windows of heaven were opened. The waters increased and lifted up the ark. The ark rose with the waters and moved about the surface of the waters.
Having chosen to align themselves with the Eternal One, those within the ark were safe and at rest in the judgement. For they had their identity in the Eternal One, did not come under the judgement.
Everything happened just as the Eternal One said it would be, it was so.
Once judgement of evil was complete, God made a wind to pass over the earth. The fountains of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped. The rain restrained. As a result the waters subsided. The ark and all those inside were safe and at rest.
So those who gave their allegiance to the Eternal One were safe and at rest in the judgment upon the earth.
The second instance of divine judgement is recorded in the book of Exodus. It was at a time when the Eternal One had chosen to reveal Himself to all people groups. To make His mighty power known to those who had elevated themselves to be all powerful He chose the smallest of tribes, the Hebrew people. It would be a fulfilment of a promise given to their ancestors many generations ago.
The Egyptian king had chosen to align himself with evil and have his identity with evil. He chose to worship other gods, those created out of myth and legend. In choosing to declare war on the Eternal One and the Hebrew people, the Egyptian king aligned himself with evil. He persecuted and oppressed the Hebrew people and put them into slavery.
Yet in amongst it all, the Eternal One was there. He once again shared His heart with one who aligned themselves with Him and worshipped only Him. His name was Moses.
The Eternal One spoke to Moses as an intimate friend, face to face. He shared how the cry of the Hebrew people had come to Him. He had seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. The Eternal One said to Moses that He would send him to the Egyptian king. He will be with Him and bring the Hebrew people out of slavery, oppression and bondage. For He will bring judgement upon the gods of Egypt and the Egyptian king will let His people go. The Eternal One is the only being who is eternal, self-existing, self-sustaining and never changing. He is the great I AM.
The Eternal One continued to share His heart with Moses. Telling him how it will be and what will take place. So Moses together with Aaron went to the king of Egypt and spoke these words. The Eternal One, who is Lord God of the Hebrew people has said, release My people so that they may have a feast to Me in the wilderness. Having chosen to reject the Eternal One, the king of Egypt refused. So he oppressed the Hebrew people even more. They were slaves to the Egypt.
So the Eternal One continued to share His heart with Moses. Through Moses He announces before it happened the judgement He would bring upon the gods of Egypt. Anyone who had aligned themselves with those gods came under their judgement. Anyone who aligned themselves with the Eternal One were not affected by the judgement.
The judgement upon the gods of Egypt consisted of 10 plagues that came upon the land of Egypt. Through these plagues that the Eternal One forwarded, the lies and deceptions of the gods of Egypt were exposed.
The king of Egypt, the Egyptians, and all the Hebrew people saw the power of the Eternal One.
Throughout the 10 plagues that struck the earth, the Eternal One set apart a portion of land for the Hebrew people to dwell safely. The name of the land was Goshen. It means drawing near.
The Eternal One said He will bring judgement upon the gods of Egypt so that all will know He is the Eternal One who is in the midst of them.
The Eternal One’s presence was there with them in the judgement. They were safe and at rest in the judgement of the gods of Egypt. The Eternal One even set apart the livestock of the Hebrew people so they would not die or be affected by the judgement that had come upon the gods of Egypt.
The Eternal One declared what would happen, so that everyone had the choice. To heed what the Eternal One had said. Or be like the king of Egypt, align themselves the gods of Egypt and come under their judgement.
A darkness so dark it could be felt came over the land of Ancient Egypt. Yet the Hebrew people had light in their dwellings. The Eternal One personally stepped down into the darkness. He brought judgement upon the gods of Egypt and all those who had aligned themselves with them came under their judgement. Those who heeded the Eternal One’s warnings were not affected by the judgement.
Having aligned himself with the gods of Egypt, the Egyptian king chose not to heed the Eternal One’s warnings of impending judgement. He therefore led Egypt into death and destruction.
As for the Hebrew people, they chose to heed the Eternal One’s warnings. At that moment in time they chose to align themselves with the Eternal One. They were safe and at rest in the judgment. They were delivered from death and destruction that was over the land. That night when the Eternal One came into the darkness and protected the Hebrew people, centuries later is still celebrated. It is the feast of the Passover.
So those who heeded the Eternal One’s warnings were safe and at rest in the judgment upon the earth.
The third instance of divine judgement, that is the final judgement which is yet to take place is recorded throughout God’s love story the Bible. Both the Old and New Testament foretell of this time.
Judgement is the perfection of God’s justice. True justice that will culminate when Jesus returns.
The Old Testament foretells when the Messiah, the Son of God executes judgement and righteousness in the earth. Those who have chosen to align themselves with the Eternal One will dwell safely in this time of judgement. His justice will be a light of the people.
The New Testament foretells of the time when final judgement will come upon the earth. Also confirming that those who dwell on the earth at that time, who have given their allegiance to the Eternal One, will be safe and at rest in the judgement. Conversely those who have given their allegiance to evil will come under the judgement of evil.
Revelation 14:7-12 saying with a loud voice, “Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.” And another angel followed, saying, “Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she has made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.” Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.” Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.
So those who have given their allegiance to the Eternal One and worship only Him will be safe and at rest in the judgment upon the earth.
When the Son of God became the Son of Man and walked the earth, He had much to say about the final judgement.
John 5:24-30 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.
Jesus the Son of God who became the Son of Man will execute the final judgement. He will judge both the living and the dead. All those throughout the ages who have given their allegiance to the Eternal One will be raised to eternal life. That is those who are alive at the time of judgement upon the earth and those who have died prior. All will be passed from death into eternal life.
Conversely all those throughout the ages who have given their allegiance to evil will be raised to eternal damnation and torment.
So those who heeded the Eternal One’s warnings and gave their allegiance to Him are safe and at rest in the judgment upon the earth. The final judgement will come when all those throughout the ages who will give their allegiance to the Eternal One have done so. True justice, HIs perfect justices will reign and the perfection of our salvation will be realised. Praise His mighty name.
