Following on from last week, we will continue with Jesus prophecies of what is yet to take place.

Last week we journeyed through the prophecies concerning the time of sorrows. Jesus speaks of life, empowerment and discernment for us His disciples during this time period. Jesus’ eternal words remains for us to stand firm in the truth that He is the Messiah, the Christ, the saviour of the world.

Jesus’ words echo through the ages of time, from generation to generation. He states, ‘…See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet...’

Jesus speaks of a time of intense persecution on a global scale. During this mass persecution many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. False prophets being those who give their allegiance to satan, yet deceive people into believing they have given their allegiance to God. Having given their allegiance to satan, are at war against God and attempt to deceive many.

Yet again Jesus speaks life, empowerment and discernment into every disciple.

Jesus assures His disciples that in receiving Him, receiving God, we will endure to the end. When the gospel has been preached as a witness to the nations and when all who will come to Him have come, then the end will be.

All these things Jesus prophesies have been there since His first coming. That is persecution, the gospel being preached and false prophets. However not on the global scale and intensity that Jesus is referring to. Whilst the increased scale and intensity of all this is currently taking place, the final climax is yet to be fulfilled.

For just as judgement and the elimination of evil must take place before full salvation is realised, so too does the time of sorrows and the great tribulation.

So revealing the heart of God and His care and concern for all people to know the truth, Jesus prophecies of what is yet to take place.

Jesus explains how there will be the abomination of desolation. That is a detestable thing, specifically the personification of evil. The abomination of desolation will be setup in the place of God, in the temple of God. This will be done by someone who has given their total allegiance to evil, yet claim they are of God.

However Jesus again assures us that in having given our allegiance to Jesus, to God, we have our identity in Him. We don’t have our identity in the false prophets, the false Messiah or the antichrist as they have their identity with evil, that is satan.

So let us continue as Jesus prophecies of what is yet to take place and hear God’s heart for all people. That each one would know the truth and not be deceived. Let us read both Matthew and Luke’s account as Jesus prophesies of what is yet to take place.

Matthew 24:29-31 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Luke 21:25-28 “And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”

This end times prophecy reveals the majesty and awesome power of God. All the powers will be shaken. Nothing will remain with power and authority in heaven or earth other than that of the Lord God Almighty. Jesus, the Son of God who became the Son of Man, will return in all His eternal glory. That is He returns in all His power and authority to judge evil and totally eradicate it. He not only comes in judgement of evil and all those who aligned themselves with evil, but also He comes with His eternal inheritance and the consummation of salvation to all those who have receive Him. That is what Jesus refers to here in Luke’s account as, ‘your redemption draws near.’

So after the time period of the time of sorrows and the great tribulation, the sign of Jesus’ coming will be seen throughout the entire cosmos. It will be at the end of the darkest time in human history, spiritually and physically.

This is defined by Jesus as the sun and moon will not give their light, the stars will fall as the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

In this passage of dialogue Jesus reiterates Old Testament and New Testament prophecies of the impending judgement of evil. This includes the empires of humanity throughout the ages who have aligned themselves with evil and thus the judgement of it. Judgement also includes all those throughout the ages who have rejected God. For in rejecting God they chose to align themselves with evil and its judgement.

The dread that falls upon the earth will not affect those who have received Jesus, received God. As Jesus tells us as His disciples we need not fear His impending judgement of evil. As having chosen to receive Jesus, receive God and His right to rule and reign we are no longer aligned with evil. Therefore we are passed from its judgement.

In Matthew’s account of Jesus’ prophecies of what is yet to take place, there is a unique reference to the tribes of the earth. They will mourn. The Greek word that has been translated as tribes refers to a specific people group. In this instance those from the 12 tribes of Ancient Israel. Specifically from the bloodline of Jacob’s 12 sons.

In the first instance recorded in Matthew of this word that has been translated as tribe is used by Jesus Himself. He states to His 12 disciples that they will judge the 12 tribes of Israel, who refused to receive Jesus the Messiah, the Christ. At Jesus’ return, they will mourn the loss of being cut off from God’s kingdom having rejected Jesus, rejected God.

Conversely, Jesus will send His angels from the four winds to gather His elect. That is all those who have said yes to Jesus, yes to God will be gathered together.

In both Matthew and Mark’s account of Jesus’ prophecies of what yet is to take place, they reveal the beautiful detail of the gathering of the elect. Both accounts reveal the vastness of God’s kingdom and the realms of His power and authority.

Let us read again Matthew 24:31 and Mark 13:27

Matthew 24:31 And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Mark 13:27 And then He will send His angels, and gather together His elect from the four winds, from the farthest part of earth to the farthest part of heaven.

From all the earth and heaven all those who have said to Jesus yes to God throughout the ages, will be gathered together with Jesus in all His glory. Those who remain alive on earth, from the east and west, north and south upon the earth will be gathered together with Him. No one who has said yes to Jesus to God will miss out.

Together with all those who have said yes to Jesus yes to God, who have gone through physical death prior to Jesus’ return, are those elect who are gathered from within the farthest part of heaven. They spiritually have been there and on that day when Jesus returns, they will be gathered together with Jesus in all His eternal glory.

In that moment of time, all those throughout the ages who have said yes to God, yes to Jesus  will be gathered together as one in Him. Each one will partake of Jesus’ glory and receive their glorified, eternal bodies. Bodies that never get sick, never wear out and never die.

In all three gospels, that is Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus continues His prophecies of what is yet to take place. Remembering that Jesus is speaking life and light over every disciple throughout the ages, so that we will not be deceived.

Matthew 24:32-35 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors! Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

This time Jesus uses a parable to help us His disciples receive a greater revelation of God and His kingdom.

Jesus turns His disciples attention to the fig tree. During winter, as the cold gets colder and the day’s light get shorter, the fig tree looses its leaves. So a hardness or strength is given to the branches. This occurs so the fig tree during winter can be resilient to any affects of the colder and darker environment it has found itself in.

This is a beautiful picture of the affect of Jesus’ words have on those who have received Him, received God. For in Jesus’ words we will be able to stand in what Jesus describes as a spiritual coldness and darkness of the end times. Yet after the great tribulation, what is to be the darkest and coldest time, having stood firm in Jesus’ love, truth and power, we will have our future hope realised.

Having said yes to Jesus, yes to God we have our identity in Jesus and are continually immersed in His spiritual armour. Our exterior solid, yet our interior tender. As we live each day in continual surrender of self will to that of God’s will. Taking a moment to receive from Him. Living in the fullness of His tender mercies, His liberating truth and being transformed  power.

Jesus states that this generation will by no means pass a way until all these things have taken place. The word that has been translated as generation links a people group or nation with a time period.

So Jesus will return in all His glory when all who have come to Him have come and all that He has prophesied has taken place. That includes the time of those of non Jewish lineage have come to Him and the time of all those of Jewish lineage who have come to Him.

Jesus is eternal, His words powerful, His heart testimonial. Heaven and earth will pass away but Jesus’ words will never pass away.

As Jesus’ assures us we need not fear the times ahead. In fact as He strengthens us outwardly and makes us tender inwardly, we can stand firm in His unbending love, liberating truth and transforming power. As He shines His eternal glorious light through us to this dark and passing world, we testify to the nations, individuals and powers. Having received Jesus, received God, we testify that Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ, the Son of God who became the Son of Man. He physically lived, died, resurrected and ascended on high. Now is at the right hand of our Father, God in heaven.

Since the majestic event of Jesus’ ascension to heaven and the first Pentecost after that event, humanity has been living in the end times.

The message then is the same message now. As Jesus’ words remain, He is coming back to judge the living and the dead. That is all those who have rejected Him, rejected God, and His right to rule and reign. That includes the empires of humanity throughout the ages, the false prophets, the false Messiah’s and satan.

We need not fear as Jesus prophesies of what is yet to take place and He declares over us, ‘See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass…’ ‘see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near…’

Praise His mighty name!
