Throughout the book of the Revelation of Jesus, there is high drama with multiple sub plots and interludes, all intertwined to unravel the mystery of God, the Eternal One. The book of the revelation of Jesus reveals the majesty of the Eternal One in Jesus the Son.

The Father, Son and Spirit are revealed through extraordinary symbolism that is accompanied by vivid descriptions of what is seen. Together with the fusion of heaven and earth and recorded dialogue between the creator and the created, the book of the Revelation of Jesus is difficult to interpret.

As the Eternal One is eternal, He is above time. Yet humanity living in this world damaged by evil is bound by time. According to the culture we are born into and our beliefs, even our perceptions of time are different. As the Eternal One is the creator of all peoples, nations and tongues, throughout the book of the Revelation of Jesus, both an eastern perception of time and western perception of time are intertwined. There is the circular, concurrent motion of time of the east, coexisting alongside the linear expression of time of the west.

Yet within it all, the Eternal One, through His anointed messenger says to the Apostle John, prophesy about many peoples, tongues, nations and kings.

So as we come to today’s text, let us take a moment to surrender our thoughts and preconceived ideas of what we think the text means. So that we can receive what the Spirit of the Eternal One is saying to us today.

In amongst the high drama of the opening of the 7 seals that begins in chapter 6 of the Revelation of Jesus, there is an interlude. To go deeper into the opening of the 7 seals please listen to our podcast, The Mystery of the 7 Seals - Part 1 and 2.

The interlude within the opening of the 7 seals echoes Old Testament prophecy. A prophecy that was given in Ancient times to the prophet Ezekiel. It is about the digesting of the words of God that taste sweet, yet become bitter in the stomach.

So let us begin with the opening scene of this New Testament prophecy and hear what the Spirit of the Eternal One is saying to the first hearers and to us today.

Revelation 10:1-7 I saw still another mighty angel coming down from heaven, clothed with a cloud. And a rainbow was on his head, his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire. He had a little book open in his hand. And he set his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land, and cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roars. When he cried out, seven thunders uttered their voices. Now when the seven thunders uttered their voices, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from heaven saying to me, “Seal up the things which the seven thunders uttered, and do not write them.”

The angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land raised up his hand to heaven and swore by Him who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and the things that are in it, the earth and the things that are in it, and the sea and the things that are in it, that there should be delay no longer, but in the days of the sounding of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, the mystery of God would be finished, as He declared to His servants the prophets.

The Apostle John testifies of what the Eternal One revealed to him. He sees another mighty angel coming down from heaven to earth. There are also several visual references to the anointed messenger’s appearance that not only reveal who he has his identity in, but also in whose authority he comes down to earth.

This mighty angel is being described as clothed with a cloud, revealing He is immersed in the Eternal One’s presence.

With a face that shines like the sun, this mighty angel is full of light. Upon his head is the colours of light described as, like a rainbow. Immersed in the Eternal One’s presence, filled with His divine light, this mighty angel comes down from heaven to earth.

When the anointed messenger of the Eternal One cried out, it was as the loud roar of a lion. His voice sounding like the roar of a lion emphasises that this anointed messenger comes in the power and authority of the one who has ultimate authority. That is Jesus, the Son of God  who became the Son of Man.

The mighty angel has a significant part in this interlude of the opening of the 7 seals. He places His feet that are described as pillars of fire on the sea and the land. Twice it is mentioned that this mighty angel was standing on the sea and on the land. Reminding the first hearers and us today that the Eternal One, the Lord God Almighty, created the heaven and the earth. He created all the things that are in heaven and all things that are on the earth and in the sea.

So in the power and authority of the creator, the anointed messenger stands. With his feet of fire upon the on the land and sea, in the power and authority of the Eternal One, the mighty angel declares that when the 7th angel is about to sound, the mystery of the Eternal One would be finished. This imagery reveals that the Eternal One will bring the fullness of His salvation and judgement upon the earth. Just as He has promised all throughout the ages, the Eternal One will fulfil it all.

That is the mystery of God declared by the anointed messenger of the Eternal One.

The fullness of salvation to all those who have received God, received Jesus and His right to rule and reign. Thus aligning themselves with God and Jesus’ inheritance. This includes the elimination of evil and ruling and reigning with Jesus for all eternity. Where we live together forever in His kingdom of divine light and life everlasting. Together forever with the Eternal One, in His sanctuary where evil has no place. Where there is more tears, no more sorrow, no more dyeing, no more pain.

For the fulfilment of salvation and eternal inheritance to be realised, the judgement and elimination of evil must take place. That is judgement will come to all those who have rejected God, rejected Jesus and His right to rule and reign. The Eternal One reveals that in rejecting Him, that is denying the only pathway to salvation. Fo in rejecting Him is to align oneself with evil and thus its judgement.

So the Eternal One who created heaven and the earth sent from heaven to earth His anointed messenger to reveal what is to take place.

In the hand of the angel who stands on the sea and one the earth is an open little book.

The stage is set for this high drama of eternity to unfold. Let us continue on and listen to what the Spirit of the Eternal One is saying to the first hearers and to us today.

Revelation 10:8-11 Then the voice which I heard from heaven spoke to me again and said, “Go, take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel who stands on the sea and on the earth.” So I went to the angel and said to him, “Give me the little book.” And he said to me, “Take and eat it; and it will make your stomach bitter, but it will be as sweet as honey in your mouth.” Then I took the little book out of the angel’s hand and ate it, and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth. But when I had eaten it, my stomach became bitter. And he said to me, “You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, tongues, and kings.”

The voice from heaven spoke to John. ‘Go, take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel who stands on the sea and on the earth.’

Again the reference to the domain of the earth and sea, that is the region where the right to rule and reign of the Eternal One is to be recognised. Reminding us that regardless of the empires of humanity that come and go, the ultimate power and authority to rule and reign is the Eternal One. There will come a time when this reality will take place. When Jesus returns in all His glory and evil will be totally eliminated and the fullness of our salvation in Him is realised.

So John responds to the voice from heaven. He says to the anointed messenger of the Eternal One, ‘Give me the little book.’

The angel’s response is very similar to Old Testament prophecy and words given to the prophet Ezekiel centuries earlier.

The Eternal One centuries earlier to Ezekiel His prophet, said to eat the scroll and go speak to the Ancient Israelites. Whether they refuse or whether they hear, Ezekiel was to speak to them the words of the Eternal One. The scroll Ezekiel was instructed to eat,  tasted like honey and sweetness. Yet as it was filled with the Eternal One’s judgement upon the Ancient Israelites who had aligned themselves with evil, Ezekiel felt bitterness. As they had rejected the Eternal One and His right to rule and reign, they came under the Eternal One’s judgement.

The scroll that John is instructed to eat will also make his stomach bitter, but will be as sweet as honey in his mouth. Knowing the Old Testament prophecy and that this is the anointed messenger from the Eternal One John took the little book.

He ate. Just as John was told it would be, it was as sweet as honey in his mouth and bitter in his stomach.

The words of the Eternal One must be prophesied again about many peoples, nations, languages and kings. Many peoples actually means those of the same bloodline or ethnicity gathered anywhere in the world. Unlike the Old Testament prophet Ezekiel, who was to prophecy to his own people the Ancient Israelites, this prophesy is global.

John is to prophecy to his own people and that is what the peoples is in this context. But he must prophecy to not only his own people of Jewish lineage but to those of non-Jewish lineage as well. As many peoples in this instance is people of the same Jewish lineage as John. No matter where they are gathered, they are who are referred to as of Jewish lineage. The nations in this context are all those from non Jewish lineage. So all peoples and nations are all those from Jewish lineage and non Jewish lineage. The Eternal One is revealing that every individual regardless of their ethnicity and location, has the right to hear the prophesy.

Kings represent all those human leaders who are in a position of power. That is the empires of humanity also must hear the prophecy.

The prophecy of the Eternal One taste as sweet as honey in the mouth of John, yet become bitter in his stomach. The Eternal One’s words are sweet as honey to those who receive His right to rule and reign and worship only Him As they bring truth and freedom, salvation and deliverance, healing and restoration.

They are bitter as the same words of the Eternal One also bring judgement. Judgement to all those who have rejected the Eternal One’s right to rule and reign and refuse to worship Him. Having rejected the Eternal One’s right to rule and reign, they have rejected the truth and freedom, salvation and deliverance, healing and restoration and as a result come under judgement.

Through this interlude in amongst the opening of the 7 seals, the Eternal One speaks to us today. To all peoples, tongues, nations and empires of humanity, the Eternal One, the creator of heaven and earth and all things good, has the right to rule and reign. He is truth and freedom, salvation and deliverance, healing and restoration.

Jesus, the Son of God who became the Son of Man is coming back to earth. This time in all His glory, power and authority. Bringing with Him the fullness of His salvation to all who have received Him. He also will bring His judgement of evil upon all those who have rejected Him and thus aligned themselves with evil.

In the Eternal One’s great love, reveals that every individual of peoples, tongues, tribes and nations has the right to hear and the right to make their choice. Praise His mighty name!
