The Excellent Wisdom of God

jesus loves : the world

Solomon poetically unveils the excellence of the Eternal One’s wisdom. For this is no ordinary wisdom. It is not the wisdom gained through life lessons or experiences. This is a wisdom that is beyond any human wisdom or understanding. It is the Eternal One’s divine wisdom, that is  the very essence of Himself. A divine wisdom that is one of His attributes.

Over the centuries humanity has sought knowledge and with knowledge gained, wisdom. Through life experiences of lessons learnt, there have been those who have claimed to be wise. Many schools of wisdom and thought have come and gone.

Yet there was a time when wisdom was sought above all else, to define culture and to govern a people group. In such a time there was a man who became known as the wisest man that ever lived. Throughout the land it became known that this man had been gifted with a unique wisdom. This man’s name was Solomon.

He was the son of king David. As it was tradition with David’s passing, Solomon became the third king of Ancient Israel. Through the wisdom Solomon gained in his life, he wanted to impart his wisdom to his son. Therefore Solomon wrote a book of proverbs and addressed it to his son.

This book of proverbs consists of sayings, poetry, short stories and wisdom quotes. Many of them are wisdom gained through Solomon’s life experience. Yet in amongst all this is a beautiful passage of text that reveals the incredible excellent wisdom of the Eternal One.

Proverbs 8:22-31 “The LORD possessed me at the beginning of His way, Before His works of old. I have been established from everlasting, From the beginning, before there was ever an earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, When there were no fountains abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled, Before the hills, I was brought forth; While as yet He had not made the earth or the fields, Or the primal dust of the world. When He prepared the heavens, I was there, When He drew a circle on the face of the deep, When He established the clouds above, When He strengthened the fountains of the deep, When He assigned to the sea its limit, So that the waters would not transgress His command, When He marked out the foundations of the earth, Then I was beside Him as a master craftsman; And I was daily His delight, Rejoicing always before Him, Rejoicing in His inhabited world, And my delight was with the sons of men.

As wisdom is one of the Eternal One’s attributes, wisdom was and is and always will be part of Him.

For there was a time, before the beginning, when all that existed was the Eternal One. That is the Father, Son and Spirit, one being, one supreme God. Even before the beginning of His creation, He possessed wisdom.

Before He created the heavens and the earth, wisdom was there. Yes even before there was ever an earth or the depths of the fountains of water, the wisdom of the Eternal One was there. Dancing, planning and anticipating the birth of creation.

Long before the mountains rose from the earth and the hills became visible, the wisdom of the Eternal One was with Him. Even before the very dust of the earth was formed, the Eternal One’s wisdom was there.

The Eternal One’s wisdom has been poured out from the very essence of Himself. From everlasting to everlasting. In His wisdom the Eternal One created the heavens and the earth. The Eternal One’s wisdom was there as He established the heavens.

In the very moment when the Eternal One drew a circle on the face of the deep, His wisdom was expressed. As the waters were separated and the firmament, that is the sky was formed, wisdom was there. In the same wisdom, the Eternal One set limits to the sea.

Like a master craftsman, the Eternal One in His wisdom marked out the foundation of the earth. For the wisdom of the Eternal One is His delight, as He rejoices from everlasting in His inhabited world.

Yes it is true, His greatest delight was with His creation of humanity. In His wisdom He inhabited His world and gave humanity dominion over it. So in His excellence of wisdom, He created humanity, both male and female equal.

It was beautiful, it was perfect, it was very good.

So from everlasting to everlasting, the divine wisdom of the Eternal One is evident. Even in this world damaged by evil, the excellent wisdom of God is there and still expressed in His  creation.

Solomon continues throughout the book of Proverbs to impart wisdom with his letter to his son. He instructs and reflects. Yet this revelation of the Eternal One’s wisdom is divinely given for it is the essence of Himself.

Another such man who received a revelation of the excellent wisdom of God was the Apostle Paul. Many centuries after Solomon and the book of Proverbs was written, the Apostle Paul writes to the early church.

The very existence of such a gathering, that is where two or more gathered together in the name of Jesus, make known the excellent wisdom of the Eternal One.

Let us go to Ephesians 3:9-12 and to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ; to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places, according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him.

The creator of heaven and earth and all things good - Father, Son and Spirit - looked through the windows of eternity and knew what would take place. Yet God still chose to create. Even before the foundation of the world, in His wisdom, God had planned to be the saviour and redeemer of all people.

So the Eternal One - Father, Son and Spirit - who in His wisdom created all things, is the same one who chose to become the Messiah, the Christ and saviour of the world.

From the Father, born of the Spirit, the Son became human. Who on behalf of humanity would be able to take back the power that humanity had given to evil and their selfish desires. So Jesus the Son of God, in the excellent wisdom of God, experienced the full human condition. Still fully divine and yet fully human Jesus surrendered the human will of humanity and was victorious over humanity’s selfish desires. In Jesus’ death and resurrection, He defeated death and disarmed the powers of evil. The Son of God in human form is the only who could fulfil all things for through Him and by Him all things were created.

Through Jesus’ death and resurrection humanity has access to His eternal salvation from the destructive forces of their selfish desires, evil and death. In receiving Jesus and His right to rule and reign we are not only delivered from those destructive forces, but we are reconciled with God and each other. We become a child of God and are evidence of His excellent wisdom.

So by our very existence, having received Jesus, received God we are His testimony. Each one throughout the ages who has said yes to Jesus, yes to God is likened to a colourful thread in God’s most beautiful tapestry of love. Each thread having equal significance, value and splendour is an integral part of God’s love story.

As a master craftsman, in His wisdom He is sewing each thread of all who are willing together into one masterpiece. Where heaven and earth become one in Christ Jesus.

God’s intention is that His multifaceted wisdom be revealed to all. So from everlasting to everlasting the excellent wisdom of God continues to be expressed. For the Spirit of God lives in everyone who has said yes to Jesus, yes to God. The Holy Spirit within each one testifies of God’s multifaceted and multicoloured wisdom.

When Jesus preached, taught and demonstrated that He is the Son of God who became human, He revealed the excellent wisdom of God. He stated to those who rejected Him, that wisdom is justified by her children. So when someone receives Jesus, receives God, they actually justify and testify of the wisdom of God.

Such is God’s excellent wisdom and great love that if there was only one person throughout all the ages who received God, He would still have created humanity. In that one person receiving God and His right to rule and reign God’s wisdom to create humanity has been justified. Oh the unfathomable depths of God’s wisdom and the overwhelming power of His love.

In another letter to those who had received Jesus, the Apostle Paul again talks about the immeasurable and excellent wisdom of the Eternal One. This time in the book titled Romans.

Let us read Romans 11:33-36 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! “For who has known the mind of the LORD? Or who has become His counselor?” “Or who has first given to Him And it shall be repaid to him?” For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.

Paul concludes his revelation of God’s everlasting love with this statement about God’s excellent wisdom. In chapters 9 through to 11 of Romans, Paul laments the rejection of God by his own people. That is those of Jewish lineage.

For not only are they Paul’s people group, but they are the ones that God gave the covenants, the promises, the calling of being His servant and light to those of non Jewish lineage and  most of all the spiritual adoption of being God’s own people.

Paul explains that in rejecting God, they rejected everything God had destined for them, including their own salvation. However as Paul states, even in their rejection, God still remained faithful. As God never takes back what He gives, He continued to pursue them in love and urge them to come back to Him.

Even in their rebellion God still fulfilled His promises to those of Jewish lineage. He Himself became the servant, the light unto the nations and the one who fulfilled all the covenants. He was born into the lineage of Abraham and king David and is the king of all kings.

God fulfils all His promises and makes them available to all. However each one has free choice. To receive Him and everything that He has given or reject Him and thus reject everything He has given.

So Paul laments for his own people. He urges that if they would turn to God and receive His right to rule and reign, God is able to sew them back into His beautiful tapestry of love.

It is in this context that Paul reveals the mystery of the unfathomable depth of God’s wisdom. Not only is God’s wisdom unfathomable but it is never ending. From everlasting to everlasting, His excellent wisdom and knowledge is beyond our human comprehension. For only the Eternal One that is Father, Son and Spirit, is the great I AM. He is the one who was and is and is to come.

In His excellent wisdom, the Eternal One created. In a moment in human history God the Son came from the Father’s heart, from heaven to earth. Born of the Spirit, He lived, died, rose from the grave and ascended on high. He is now back in heaven at the right hand of God the Father.

In His excellent wisdom Jesus the Son of God who became the Son of Man is coming back. This time to bring everything to its completeness. Bringing His fullness of salvation and judgement.

To all those who have rejected Jesus, rejected God, in doing so have aligned themselves with evil. As a result enter into the fullness of His judgement of evil and the eternal inheritance of evil.

To all those who have received Jesus, received God, in doing so have aligned themselves with God. As a result enter into the fullness of His salvation and the eternal inheritance of Jesus.

Oh how unsearchable are His judgements and the excellence of His wisdom. To Him be the glory and honour, power and strength, blessing and wisdom, for ever and ever, Amen!
