Throughout the ages humanity has sought to be free of the condemnation and shame. For in the beginning the first man and woman chose to become one with both good and evil. As a result both themselves and all of creation became damaged by evil.
Full of guilt and shame the first man and woman hid from God. Yet God in His great love pursued them. Personally and intimately covered their guilt and shame.
Centuries later the Son of God became human. He came to remove all our guilt and shame. So that we can be spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically washed clean.
Let us go to that moment in history when Jesus physically did life with His disciples. He washed them clean, spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically with His truth.
So let us go back to that moment and listen to the words Jesus spoke.
John 15:1-5 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
This is a very powerful word picture of how having received Jesus, received God, we are washed clean. Not only are we washed clean, but we become part of a beautiful new garden. A garden of sustenance, that is full of joy and selfless love. Where Father God tills the soil, provides a never ending supply of pure water and His glorious light. For our Father in heaven is always working.
Jesus states that He is the true vine. The one who connects us to God the Father and washes us clean. Jesus is the source of all the joy, love, life and goodness of God.
Upon receiving Jesus, receiving God, we are spiritually connected to Jesus the true vine. We become Jesus’ spiritual branches in our Father’s spiritual garden. Being connected to Jesus the main stem we are clean.
Jesus states, ‘You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.’
This Greek word that has been translated as ‘word’ in this context means a living voice. Jesus is the eternal living voice who spoke the light into the darkness. The sun, moon and stars were brought forth at the sound of His voice. Centuries after creation, Jesus the eternal living voice became one of us.
The Apostle John puts it this way.
John 1:14-18 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ ” And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.
Jesus was and is and always will be one with God the Father. Yet in a moment in time He stepped out of eternity into our temporary existence. In human form He lived, died, rose from the dead and is now ascended on high. He did it all so that we could be spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically cleansed. So we being mortal can be enjoined with the eternal.

Upon receiving Jesus we are one with Him. Being one with Jesus, we are one with the Father.

Jesus explains in John 15 verse 2, that every branch that does not bear fruit He lifts up. Out of God’s great love He raises us up out of the dirt of humanity. He raises us up to be spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically washed clean. Jesus lifts us up and shows us that we are clean having received Him. For when Jesus speaks it is so.
Jesus also states that every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
The Greek word that has been translated as ‘prune’ in this context means to be free of guilt. To cleanse, that is to remove the guilt.
The only other time this word that has been translated as prune occurs in the New Testament is in the book of Hebrews. Where the writer is talking to those of Jewish lineage. The writer declares that the festivals, sacrifices and offerings given through Moses did not cleanse or purify a person.
In this same passage the writer also links the word that has been translated as clean or purified with the removal of guilt.
Let us read Hebrews 10:1-2 For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins.
And Hebrews 10:19-23 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.
It is only through receiving Jesus, receiving God, giving total allegiance to Him that we are purified. That is cleansed spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically. Being cleansed or purified includes the removal of guilt.
However it is the daily journey for us to live in the fullness of this reality. God is the one who cleanses not only our spirit but also our minds. It is the daily journey to surrender to God our thoughts. Where we take a moment to remember we are already clean.
Therefore the writer of Hebrews urges the first hearers and to us today, let us draw near to God. That is spiritually come into His presence. That is be still and take a moment to surrender our thoughts to Him, being immersed in His presence. Come boldly to the inner sanctum of His throne room. Letting Him take us deeper into His sacred space. Knowing we are spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically washed clean.
The first mention in the New Testament of the word that has been translated as clean or pure is in the book of Matthew. Matthew records the time when Jesus was preaching and teaching on the Kingdom of God. Jesus saw the multitudes and went up on a mountain to preach. His disciples were also there listening.
Jesus declared in Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.
For having received Jesus, received God and given total allegiance to Him, worshipping only Him, we are are truly blessed. We shall see God.
Jesus reveals the complete cleansing that He provides. The purification of not only our thoughts but our emotions. Our inner thoughts and desires become purified by God as we surrender them to Him.
Living in a continual heart and mind condition of surrender, we are not only transformed by God, but receive a greater revelation of who He is. Each day is a new day to receive more of Him.
As we live in this world damaged by evil, the circumstances of this life can create a false perception of God and self. However as we stand in the truth and live in a continual heart, mind condition of surrender to God, He opens our spiritual eyes of understanding. Where we perceive God correctly, in the light of His truth and character.
In this life journey He enables us to see him spiritually. However there will come a day when we shall see Him face to face physically. This will be in the new heaven and new earth. Where we will be living with our Father and Lord in our new physical, eternal, purified bodies. For the pure in heart shall see God.
Let us take a glimpse into the future, looking through the eyes of the Apostle John. As revealed to Him by the Holy Spirit.
Revelation 22:1-7 And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever. Then he said to me, “These words are faithful and true.” And the Lord God of the holy prophets sent His angel to show His servants the things which must shortly take place. “Behold, I am coming quickly! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.”
The word that has been translated as pure in describing the river of water of life is the same word that Jesus used in John 15:3 as clean and in Matthew 5:8 as pure.
The pure river of life flows from the physical throne of God and of the Lamb. We see and experience this physical reality in the new heaven and the new earth.
Until then, in this life journey, wherever God’s right to rule and reign is recognised, we spiritually experience this pure water of life.
Back to John 15 let us read again what Jesus declared in verse 5.
John 15:5 I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
The main action word in this verse is abide. That means as we journey through this life having receive Jesus, received God we remain one with Him. That is to live in His identity of being a disciple of Jesus being connected to the main stem. Giving total allegiance to Jesus, total allegiance to God, worshipping only Him. At rest in Him, receiving from Him.
Jesus declares as we abide, that is remain in Him, we are one with Him. Spiritually drinking freely the pure living waters that flow from the throne of God. Jesus is the source of the pure living waters of God.
As disciples of Jesus we remain connected to the vine. As the branches, being spiritually enjoined to Jesus, we receive directly from Jesus. For He is the source of the joy, love, life and goodness of God.
When Jesus walked the earth as man, He revealed that He is not only the source of God’s living waters but the source of His spiritual food as a human.
Let us read John 4:34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.
Having received Jesus, received God, we are spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically washed clean.
There will come a day when we will have our eternal bodies that are physically washed clean. We will see Him face to face.
Until then to live in the reality of being emotionally and mentally washed clean is the daily journey. Where we take a moment to be still in God’s presence. In surrender of our emotions and thoughts to Him. He renews our heart and mind. For that is the will of the God.To be transformed into His character. To be spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically washed clean. Living in that reality.
