Let us go back to the time when the Son of God became the Son of Man. Still fully divine, Jesus the Son of God became human. Jesus the king of God’s eternal kingdom gave up His heavenly abode and glorious form.
He came down from heaven and waked through humanity’s dirt and shame. Bringing healing to the broken hearted and liberty to the captives. Jesus set at liberty those who are oppressed and opened humanity’s eyes to the unseen. For He became the visible expression of the invisible God.
Jesus is the Lord of everyone’s destiny. He is the judge of the living and the dead. Jesus, who is just and true brings the judgment of eternity.
As Jesus was ministering throughout the cities and villages, one of His main topics was judgment. Jesus preached and taught the gospel of the kingdom. For the one who is just and true determines that everyone has the right to hear the truth. That is the truth about God, self and the evil one.
As Jesus walked in humanity’s dirt and shame, He healed every sickness and disease. When Jesus saw the multitudes, he was moved to compassion. For they were weary and scattered, like sheep without a shepherd.
Yes Jesus experienced it all. The physical, emotional and mental pain of humanity. Jesus came humbly down to humanity’s lowest point of need. He experienced the full human condition, intimately and personally. Doing life together, Jesus interacted with those in power and those who were powerless. Having no place to lay His head, He went from place to place. He was both rejected and despised.
Yet during His time on earth there were those who received Him. They followed Him from town to town, village to village. During Jesus journey with His disciples, there came a time when they were to be empowered by Him. That is released to go and do likewise. As they journeyed through this life, they were to humbly walk with the people. In Jesus’ identity and name, they were to reveal the truth about God, self and others. Testifying that Jesus is both the bringer of salvation and the judge of eternity.
Personally and intimately, Jesus gave His 12 disciples His power over unclean spirits and all kinds of sickness and disease. He gave them a brief on how they were to walk humbly with God and live humbly with others. They were to understand that the way they were to live would be a witness of Him.
However if they were rejected as disciples of Jesus, they were to move on. That is move to the next household who was willing to listen to the good news of Jesus’ coming. For if they rejected His disciples who came in His name, they Jesus. In rejecting Jesus, they rejected God. For He was sent from the Father in heaven. In rejecting God, rejecting Jesus they rejected their only pathway to salvation.
Jesus explains to His disciples that those who have rejected their only pathway to salvation, remained under judgment. That is the judgment of eternity. By rejecting Jesus, rejecting God, they are effectively aligning themselves with evil and the judgment of it.
It is also recorded in God’s love story the Bible that Jesus sent out another 70 disciples. He gave them the same brief as to that of the 12. As being a disciple of Jesus meant they went in His power and authority. That is His power and authority over the evil one and self. Jesus’ power to live in the fullness of His victory by being in continual surrender to God the Father n heaven.
In the context of all this, Jesus speaks on the judgment of eternity. In amongst defining what is judged, Jesus reveals God’s free gift of salvation. So let us pick up the dialogue of this account in the gospel according to Matthew. Jesus is now speaking the multitudes.
Matthew 11:20-30 Then He began to rebuke the cities in which most of His mighty works had been done, because they did not repent: “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you. And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades; for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I say to you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.”
At that time Jesus answered and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Here the saviour and judge of eternity speaks of both judgment and salvation. For the fullness of salvation to take place, evil and the empires of humanity that rejected Jesus, rejected God must be judged.
Salvation is God’s free gift of Himself. He personally invites every individual to partake of His salvation, yet not all choose to receive it.
Jesus explains that those who reject God, reject the Son, consider themselves wise and prudent. Yet they are blinded by their own pride. Conversely those who choose to receive Jesus, receive God, Jesus likens them to babes. For babes do not consider themselves wise and prudent. They are open to receive the truth and are not blinded by pride or shame.
Instead of being consumed by pride or shame, they are humbled by Jesus’ presence and are willing to learn from Him. Willing to know Him and acknowledge His power and authority. That is surrender to Him and accept His roughy to rule and reign. Accept God’s free gift of Himself and thus receive salvation. For Jesus is the one who brings salvation and judgment of eternity.
Jesus explains that He knows Father God in heaven. In the context of this statement, Jesus is revealing that He is also fully divine. As the Father is fully divine, so is Jesus being one with Him. Only God Himself knows Himself. Jesus God the Son is the of the same essence as the Father. Father, Son and Spirit, one God who created. Since before the dawn of time the Father, Son and Spirit always was and is and always will be God. Even when the Son became human, He did not loose His divinity.
As Jesus states all things have been delivered into His hands. He is the judge of eternity. Jesus is the Lord of everyones eternal destination.
Let us go to another moment in time when Jesus revealed the judgment of eternity is the rejection of God and His free gift of salvation.
The situation was this. Jesus had just healed a certain man who had an infirmity for 38 years. For this reason those of Jewish lineage who had rejected God, sought to kill Jesus. They tried to justify by saying it is forbidden to heal on the sabbath. Jesus knowing their hearts responds. He states that both He and the Father have been working since the dawn of time. They have been pursuing humanity in love. Therefore those of Jewish lineage wanted all the more to kill Jesus. For they had rejected God, so they rejected Jesus.
Let us pick up the dialogue.
John 5:19-30 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel. For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will. For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.
Again Jesus reiterates His oneness with God the Father and reveals His divinity. For only God can give life and only God is divine.
Both the Father and Son are the giver of life. As in the beginning God, the Father, Son and Spirit said, ‘Let us make humanity.’ So the Father, Son and Spirit breathed their breath of life into their own creation.
Jesus the Son of God who became the Son of Man explains that, whoever received Him and His right to rule ands reign is passed from death to life. For to receive Jesus is to receive God.
Jesus also explains that the Father has granted judgment to the Son. For it is the Son who became human. In His human form, still fully divine, Jesus defeated death and the selfish desires of humanity. He was still fully divine when He walked the earth as a man and lived in continual surrender of His human will to that of divine will.
This powerful truth reveals the unconditional, never-ending love of God. As He did it all for us so that we could be truly free. He did it all because He so loves. For that is His nature.
The Apostle John received a powerful revelation of who Jesus is and all He has done for us. Let us read 1 John 4:14-19 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him. Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. We love Him because He first loved us.
God’s love has been perfected amongst humanity. So that we can be truly free. Having received Jesus, received God we are passed from judgment to eternal life. Our confidence is in Jesus. That is who He is, what He has done and will do. He did it all for all humanity. For Jesus brings salvation and judgment of eternity.
Just as Jesus lived in this world damaged by evil, in continual surrender of His human will, so too are we to be. We are to love Him because He first loved us. That ability to receive love and to be loved and to give love is a work of God in a continual surrendered heart and mind. So as we journey through this life in this world damaged by evil may we live of a continual surrender to the Father’s will. Living in the knowledge and experience that Jesus brings salvation and judgment for eternity. Praise His mighty name!
