Following on from last week, we will continue journeying through some of the Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah, the Anointed One, the Christ.

We looked at some of the scriptures that revealed the Anointed One of the Eternal Almighty God and how He would come from the lineage of Abraham and be a blessing to all people groups.

He would also be from the lineage of King David. The Anointed One would have the power and authority of the Eternal Almighty God. For He is the King of all kings. His power and authority and kingdom is eternal.

It was also revealed that the Anointed One of the Eternal Almighty God would come as a vulnerable baby, born in Bethlehem. He would personally come from eternity into our finite world. For He is the Eternal Almighty God Himself.

So today we will continue our journey through some more of the prophecies concerning the Messiah, the Anointed One of the Eternal Almighty God.

Again we will go back to the time of the Ancient Israelites. When they had turned their backs on the Eternal Almighty God. Yet in amongst humanity’s darkness, the Eternal Almighty God through His prophets still continued to pursue them in love and shine His glorious light.

One such prophet was Isaiah.

Isaiah 42:1-9 “Behold! My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles. He will not cry out, nor raise His voice, Nor cause His voice to be heard in the street. A bruised reed He will not break, And smoking flax He will not quench; He will bring forth justice for truth. He will not fail nor be discouraged, Till He has established justice in the earth; And the coastlands shall wait for His law.” Thus says God the LORD, Who created the heavens and stretched them out, Who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it, Who gives breath to the people on it, And spirit to those who walk on it: “I, the LORD, have called You in righteousness, And will hold Your hand; I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people, As a light to the Gentiles, To open blind eyes, To bring out prisoners from the prison, Those who sit in darkness from the prison house. I am the LORD, that is My name; And My glory I will not give to another, Nor My praise to carved images. Behold, the former things have come to pass, And new things I declare; Before they spring forth I tell you of them.”

So the king of all kings would be a servant to all the people of every tongue, tribe and nation. He would bring forth justice, that is equality and respect for each individual.

The Anointed One would bring with Him His law or instruction on what is truth. For He is trustworthy, faithful and true and as such the only one who can determine truth.

The Anointed One would be a covenant to all people. He would personally become one with all those who are willing, so that we can choose to become one with Him. The Anointed One would offer His covenant of love and seal the covenant with His own blood. His covenant is of mutual respect, with a pledge of total allegiance to each other.

The Eternal Almighty God is the covenant making and covenant keeping one. He pledges His allegiance to humanity. It is each individual’s free choice to receive Him and enter into His  covenant of honour, love and allegiance with Him. Or the choice is to reject Him.

So the next prophecy is: The Anointed One of the Eternal, Almighty God would be a covenant to all people.

The Anointed One is the divine light. The spiritual light that pushes back the spiritual darkness of evil and the selfish desires of humanity.

He is the glory of the Eternal Almighty God, for He is the creator of heaven and earth. The Anointed One is the one who gave humanity their very breath of life. For He is the giver of life itself.

He is the living God who shines His glorious light and brings revelation. He illuminates His love for us and His desire for us to be truly free. The Anointed One reveals the secrets of humanity’s heart, so that we would know our need for a saviour. He knows our past, He knows the present and He knows the future. For He is eternal and time is in His hands.

The Anointed One of the Eternal Almighty God would push back the spiritual darkness and break the chains of humanity and evil. He would bring revelation and shine His glorious light. The glory of Eternal Almighty God. All people of every tongue, tribe and nation would see His great light. He would bring true justice of equality and respect. For that is His nature.

The next prophecy is: The Anointed One of the Eternal, Almighty God would be a light to all people.

The Eternal Almighty God continued to share His heart and plan with His prophet Isaiah, the Ancient Israelites and ultimately all people. One of the most heartfelt prophecies concerning the Anointed One is that He would be a man of sorrows.

Let us read Isaiah 53 Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken. And they made His grave with the wicked— But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth. Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand. He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.

The Anointed One, the Eternal Almighty God Himself would walk through the dirt of humanity. He would experience the full human condition.

The Anointed One would be rejected, shamed and despised by humanity. He would weep, bleed and personally experience grief, sorrow and pain. Yet knowing He would be emotionally, mentally and physically abused by humanity, the Anointed One would willingly do it all for us.

However humanity through their own pride and selfish desires would blame God. They would say He was smitten by God. Yet it would be humanity who would smite the Anointed One, bruise Him, torture Him and chastise Him. They would know He was an innocent man, yet would be falsely judged and publicly execute Him. He would die a death of a criminal, yet His body would be laid in a tomb of the rich.

Humanity demands that someone has to pay the cost for all the offences ever said, thought or done to self and others. Knowing this, the Eternal Almighty God, in His great love, personally intercedes for us all.

For it pleases the Eternal Almighty God to do this for us. For He had to suffer, so that we could believe and receive His victory. That is He would not only pay the cost for us, but the Anointed One would justify us. He would make us equal, right and innocent.

In receiving the Anointed One and His right to rule and reign is to receive His sacrifice. To receive His sacrifice is to receive His victory.

So the next prophecy we have looked at is: The Anointed One of the Eternal, Almighty God would be a suffering servant.

To sum up the Messiah, the Anointed One, that is the Christ would be a covenant for all people. He would seal this covenant of equality and honour with His own shed blood.

He would be light to all people. The Anointed One would push back the spiritual darkness and shine His great light. He would bring revelation of both the heart of the Father in heaven and the heart of humanity.

As the king of all kings, the Anointed One would be a suffering servant. He would subject Himself to the full human condition and pay the cost for us. The Anointed One would personally intercede for us.

So time passed. Hundred and hundreds of years later, after these and all the other prophecies were spoken, the Anointed One of the Eternal Almighty God did come. His name is Jesus.

This momentous time was recorded in the New Testament Gospels. Which are the eye witness accounts of Jesus’ human birth, life, death and resurrection.

Just before He sacrificed His life, Jesus revealed that is in His human body, that He brings the New covenant of the Eternal, Almighty God.

Matthew 26:27-28 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

Matthew 4:12-17 Now when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee. And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles: The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death Light has dawned.” From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Matthew 8:16-17 When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “He Himself took our infirmities And bore our sicknesses.”

The resurrected Jesus, before He ascends into heaven opens up His disciples their understanding of the suffering servant.

Luke 24:44-47 Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.” And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

There are many more things written of Jesus fulfilling these prophecies. Jesus is the Anointed One the and covenant to all people. He is the light of the light of the world who pushes back the darkness and brings revelation. Jesus is the king of all kings who becomes the suffering servant who pays the cost for us. Through Jesus’ life, death and resurrection He justifies us and sets us free. Praise His mighty name!
