In days of old, where there was little rain, in the driest of regions, digging wells was essential for life, power and freedom.
As water is essential for life, any region or territory to thrive must have an accessible water supply. In the driest of regions, water was found and reached by accessing the underground water system. Through digging wells, the barrier between the person and the clean water was removed.
Strategically whoever owned the well, had the power. Whoever owned the water source, had the freedom to sustain themselves and others.
So let us go back to the days of old. When digging wells was essential for life, power and freedom.
The situation was this. Isaac had given his allegiance to the Eternal One. He worshipped the creator of heaven and earth and all things good. A generation earlier, Isaac’s father Abraham had dug wells in the land in which God had shown him.
There was a famine in the land. The Eternal One appeared to Isaac and told him to dwell in this land even though there is a famine. For the Eternal One stated that He had given the land to his father Abraham and his descendants. The Eternal One is faithful and true. He stated He would fulfil His promises given to Abraham through his son Isaac.
So Isaac and his wife Rebekah dwelt in a place known as Gerar. Isaac sowed in that land and reaped a hundred fold crop. As it is recorded in the pages of history, Isaac gained much earthly wealth. As a result the co-inhabitants, the Philistines had become become envious of Isaac. So they filled the wells that Isaac’s father Abraham had dug with dirt.
Effectively blocking access to the underground water.
Let us pick up the story Genesis 26:16-25 And Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we.” Then Isaac departed from there and pitched his tent in the Valley of Gerar, and dwelt there. And Isaac dug again the wells of water which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham. He called them by the names which his father had called them.
Also Isaac’s servants dug in the valley, and found a well of running water there. But the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen, saying, “The water is ours.” So he called the name of the well Esek, because they quarreled with him. Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over that one also. So he called its name Sitnah. And he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name Rehoboth, because he said, “For now the LORD has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.”
Then he went up from there to Beersheba. And the LORD appeared to him the same night and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham; do not fear, for I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for My servant Abraham’s sake.” So he built an altar there and called on the name of the LORD, and he pitched his tent there; and there Isaac’s servants dug a well.
Here we see the military strategy of cutting off the water source of the enemy. Instead of retaliation, Isaac and all his community moved to another location. They found water elsewhere and dug the wells of his father Abraham. Unblocking them to gain access to the water. But the Philistines claimed it was theirs.
Again Isaac and his community moved to the valley and dug a well. Again the Philistines claimed the water was theirs. A third time Isaac and all his community moved to another place and dug another well. Again there was a dispute so again Isaac and his community moved on.
They dug a well another well and this time there was no dispute. Isaac and his community now had direct access to the source of life. They were empowered to access the water that was always there and live in the freedom of drinking freely.
Then Isaac went up from there to the same place where Isaac’s father Abraham made a peace covenant with Abimelech the king of the Philistines a generation ago. The Eternal One appeared to Isaac and spoke these powerful and intimate words of peace, assurance and love. ‘Do not fear, for I am with you.’
When the Eternal One speaks it is so. By speaking ‘Do not fear’ the Eternal One is not telling Isaac what to do. Instead the Eternal One is speaking peace into Isaac’s mind and emotions.
Not only does the Eternal One speak this peace over Isaac, but shares with him the depths of His heart. The Eternal One explains, ‘For I am with you.’ Even if Isaac is not aware of the Eternal One being with him, the truth is, He is there with him. He is there with Isaac intimately and personally. Even if Isaac’s situation did not change, the Eternal One is with Isaac. For this is the blessing and nature of the Eternal One. He is there in amongst the famine, drought and conflicts of this world.
Isaac’s response to this truth was to dwell or live where the Eternal One at come to Him. To live in that physical and spiritual reality of being aware that the creator of heaven and earth is with him. Intimately and personally.
The name of the physical place where Isaac dwelt was Beersheba. It means well of the seventh fold oath or treaty. Remembering it was the same place where a peace treaty took place a generation before. So in the same place where Isaac father Abraham and Abimelech the king of the Philistines made a peace covenant, Isaac and Abimelech the king of the Philistines made a peace covenant.
But what is even more amazing is that Abimelech the king of Philistines, testifies of the Eternal One. He recognises He is with Isaac.
There are many things we can learn about God from this true event that is recorded in the pages of history. For as it is in the natural physical realm, so it is in the spiritual realm, as God created all things.
In the spiritual realm, spiritual waters of life everlasting are described by the prophet Isaiah as the wells of salvation. The spiritual waters bring eternal life, empowerment and freedom. Unlike the natural world where the water source can run dry, the Eternal One’s spiritual water never runs dry. For His living waters are eternal, as He is eternal.
However just like in the physical realm, there can be blockages to accessing the water source that is always there. Blockages that even prevent people from coming to the well of salvation.
Not only block those from coming to the well of salvation, but prevent those who have drunk from the well of salvation drinking freely each day. Just like the dirt that the enemy placed in the wells that Abraham had already dug, there can be blockages to accessing the water of the well already dug in the spiritual realm also. Whilst those who have already drunk of the well of salvation are saved and have received the promise of eternal life, there can be blockages from being empowered to live in the freedom of drinking daily the spiritual waters. They can become spiritual dry.
One of the major blockages from drinking freely His living waters is false perceptions. Whether it is false perception of the Eternal One, false perception of self or false perception the evil one, each can create a stumbling block from living in the joy of salvation. A blockage from being empowered each day to live in the freedom and reality of the truth. That is the truth about the Eternal One, self and others.
A false perception of the Eternal One can bring fear, distrust and even resentment. Bringing confusion and chaos within one’s heart and mind. A false perception of the Eternal One can cause anger and frustration toward Him. Falsely connecting circumstances of this word damaged by evil with the Eternal One.
For those who have yet to drink of His well of salvation a false perception of the Eternal One can be a stumbling block to choosing to say yes to Jesus, yes to God. Giving total allegiance to Him and worship only Him.
For those who have drank of His well of salvation, a false perception of the Eternal One can block mind from remembering that He is not only with us who has said yes to Him, but also He dwells within us. With His abiding Holy Spirit within us, regardless of circumstances in this world damaged by evil, He is with us.
He is there with us in the time of want and the time of plenty. There with us in the drought and floods. Through the mountains and the valleys He is there with us and in us. Together through this life journey, the creator of the universe is intimate and personal. He whispers His gentle words of love, fear not for I am with you.
His presence is the blessing of this life. The only eternal blessing. As everything of this life and world is temporary. Everything pertaining to the Eternal One is eternal and only good. As that is His nature.
A false perception of self results in either pride or shame. Pride is a false perception of self that considers oneself greater than another. Shame is of the same root of false perception, yet is the opposite to pride. It is a false perception of self that considers oneself lesser than another.
Both pride and shame are a stronghold in one’s life that are blockages from drinking freely the living waters of the Eternal One. Whether it is the well of salvation or having drunk of the well of salvation, drinking daily His living waters.
A false perception of the evil one results in being trapped in fear and lies. The evil one’s only weapons are lies and deceptions. Knowing the truth about the Eternal One, self and the evil one empowers us to expose the lies and deceptions of the evil one as just that. Lies and deceptions.
Digging wells is to remove the blockages that have formed in one’s own heart and mind. Removing blockages of false perceptions by knowing and receiving the truth.
However having heard the truth, yet actively chosen to reject the Eternal One’s invitation to drink from His well of salvation, is to deny oneself their only pathway to salvation. The Apostle Peter describes them in 2 Peter 2:17 as ‘…wells without water, clouds carried by a tempest, for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.’
Haven chosen to receive the truth about the Eternal One, accepting His right to rule and reign is to drink of His well of salvation. Giving total allegiance to Him, worshipping only Him.
Having drunk from His well of salvation, each day is a new day to surrender to the Eternal One our thoughts, beliefs and perceptions. Each day is a new day to know and experience Him.
Knowing and experiencing the truth exposes the lies and deceptions of the evil one and self. Being empowered by Him to draw from His spiritual well of salvation that He has placed within all who have received Him. Each day living in the freedom of surrender to Him. Being reminded of the truth of who the Eternal One is, all He has done and will do. That He is with us and made His home in us.
The king of the Philistines came to know that the Eternal One was with Isaac. Not by anything Isaac had done but by everything the Eternal One had done. Isaac’s response was to worship the Eternal One and testify of Him. He chose to dwell with the Eternal One. Wherever that was, the Eternal One was with him.
For us today, having drunk from the Eternal One’s well of salvation, may we live in a continual heart mind condition of surrender to Him. Letting Him dig deeper and deeper in our hearts and minds the truth. Empowered to draw each day with His joy from His well of salvation. So that the world may know Him. The Eternal One who created the heavens and the earth and all things good.
Let us take a moment to be still and reflect as we worship only Him.
