Take your Bibles. And turn with me to the book of Ephesians, Ephesians chapter four. And I'm going to read this morning rather than reading as I have every Sunday during this kind of mini series, all the entire chapter from verse one, I'm going to begin reading today, just in verse 17. And I'm gonna go to our final verse for our time together this morning in verse 24, because I'll give you an. Our exposition, a little bit of review of what we've covered so far, but in Ephesians chapter four, beginning with verse 17, reading through verse 24. Now this I say and testify in the Lord that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding. Alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them do to their hardness of heart. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. But that is not the way you learned Christ, assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him. As the truth is in Jesus to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds and to put on the new self created after the likeness of God and true righteousness. And holiness I've titled this morning. This message something that is not necessarily unique, but off with the old and on with the new here. Here's what we've seen. I told you, I'd give you, it's a very abbreviated review of where we've been over the last few weeks. Here's what we've seen so far, Paul, after laying out the indicatives of the gospel. And Christian doctrine in verses and chapters one through three in chapter four, transitions to the imperatives that are not only intricately, but intrinsically connected to them. So we see in chapter four that it is full of gospel impaired. As we've seen that over the last couple of weeks as we've been there. Paul began, for example, in chapter four, as we've already examined with the plea for his Raiders, when he says, I urge you that as sense of pleading with those who are reading as a pistol with the plea, for his readers to walk in a manner worthy of the calling, to which they had been called. We see that in chapter four, verse one. So at the opening of this chapter, we see the first. Of two walks. You'll recall. I mentioned to you that Paul's use of the Greek word peripateo or walk is meant to convey the idea of one's conduct. That is how a person lives. And in verses two through three, we see the virtues that characterize the walk worthy of one's called to salvation in Christ. And we also see him come back to that in verse 15. Of chapter four. And then when we get to verses 17 through 19, which is actually where we were last week, even though I concluded with verse 20 of Ephesians four, we're introduced to a second walk. This was last week's subject, a walk of a completely different nature. In these verses, we see the things that characterize the walk of those Paul refers to as Gentiles. And you remember that I shared with you that Paul's use of the Greek word ethnos or translated here. Gentiles is not meant to me, those who are of non-Jewish birth, but in, in one of the ways that he used is that word in the Greek tech is texts is to imply those who are unregenerate. Those who are. Not in a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. So here we see a wall that is the walk of the Gentiles, meaning the unregenerate. So we're given these two walks to view as a comparison while the virtues of the walk or the life that Christians are to live are of one nature. The characteristics or the walk of life of the unreached unit of, of the unregenerate are of a completely different nature as we saw last week. And we'll see even more this morning, Paul's imperative in verse 11 is not only an exhortation. But it is an admonition. Look back with me for a moment at verse 11 and you will see what I'm talking about in verse 11. He says this statement, he says, No, that's not the first time, but in verse 17 is the imperative numbers 11. He says, now this I say and testify in the Lord that you must no longer walk as the gin do. So it's not only an exhortation number 17, but it is an admonition. The characteristics that Mark the life of the unregenerate are to be far from the ones who profess Christ as Lord and savior. In fact, Look at what Paul writes in verse 20, which is where I closed in our time together. Last Lord's day in verse 20, he writes these words, but this is not the way you learned Christ. Now I want you to do, if you don't mind writing in your Bibles, or if you do, and you're taking notes, you can note this, but I want you to underline our note, the phrase, the way you learned Christ learned crisis. Let's spend a few moments here. Let's pause here for a few moments and we might understand what Paul is saying. What does he mean? This is important that we understand it. The verb from which. We get the word learned from in this verse is the word in the Greek. It is also the word by the way we get discipled from where I discipline learner of Christ is derived from this same verb. And as many comments taters suggests, the verb can mean the process of learning. Now I'm going to go slow. You guys want to make sure you get this. It can mean the process of learning. However, it is also been stated that the verb can mean quote, to come to no end of quote, as a one time act. Now, how do you know how to, how to interpret that? How do you know how to look at that verb in the Greek? When you're reading our, especially our English text and looking at it, the tense of the verb. And the context in which it is used, determines how it should be interpreted. Here in verse 20 of Ephesians four, both the tents and the context warrant that it be understood as a one time act specifically, typically referring to the moment of their salvation. That is when they were regenerated and converted to Christ. So when you read verse 20, But this is not the way you learn Christ. It is to be seen again as a one time act that moment when they were regenerated and converted to Christ. Now that helps us learn Christ therefore means having trusted Christ, having come to true saving faith now because of their coming to know Christ. In a saving way. There is no excuse for continuing to behave like the unregenerate. They were once counted among. So after giving them the characteristics of the walk of the Gentile or the walk of the unregenerate, he immediately reminds him of what's happened in their lives. You have been changed. You have been converted, you have come to saving faith in Christ. And so. That walk is something that should not be spoken of among you because no Christ, you have learned Christ. And such learning is exemplified or is to be exemplified by living daily, in accordance to the principles of the truth of the gospel they have heard and claim to believe. In other words, it's merely not just something they've heard and believe it is to be exemplified in the way that they live their lives. Learning Christ has to do with both the mind. And the heart both are impacted in his such a way as to result in a life that is completely transformed. I won't just allow me a moment if you will, to kind of camp here on this idea of impacting both the mind and the heart, because I wanted to make sure we understand that learning Christ. While not merely intellectual in nature does not equate with a dismissal of the importance of the intellect or the importance of the mine. I've often said to you, you noticed when you walked the breezeway this morning, that there was not a sign saying, check your mind at the door. As if somehow from the point moment you walk up the breezeway into the door, our thinking didn't matter anymore. That's simply not the case. We understand that learning Christ while you're going to repeat it is not merely an intellectual endeavor. We do not dismiss the significance or the importance. Uh, the mind foolish people who often. I understand nothing of Christianity, especially the nature of our salvation often claim that we call being saved. What we call being saved is simply a mindless endeavor. That in fact, that's exactly what happened when we came to faith in Christ. We somehow mr. Our thinking and our mind, and we just acted in faith or on faith in a way that they interpret faith. Just a mindless endeavor, something that bypasses the mind appealing only to faith, what they would refer to blind faith, faith that is apart from reason while salvation is. And I wanna make this clear while salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone, something happens to the believer. At salvation, Christians are given a regenerated, really pleased. Listen to this. Christians are given a regenerated mental ability to comprehend the truth of the gospel and once comprehending it, believing it, what was beforehand beyond. Their comprehension. What was beforehand beyond our comprehension, as unregenerate people due to their, our lost spiritual Dick condition becomes comprehensible. How many of us over the years have conversation with people that are unregenerate that are not believers, and we will take them through a very. Perhaps systematic and very clear presentation of gospel truth, biblical truth, and regards to salvation. And that when we finished the presentation or conversation with them, whatever it is almost, we look in their faces in some cases. And we have that proverbial the deer in the headlights look. And you're wondering what didn't I say that I might have said. In fact, that's really where most people turn their attention to something they didn't do. Something, they should've said clearer. They could have said better. They could have employed another technique that would have been more successful in sharing the gospel. But yet you have to understand now the person that you are speaking to in, in their unregenerate condition, lax, as it were the mental capability, to hear the gospel, to understand the gospel and to believe the gospel. That's something that has God has work on and change in Israel is beyond their comprehension. It is incomprehensible because it is beyond spirits, their comprehension. If we look for example, at Romans chapter 10, Romans chapter 10 verses nine and 10. We see in verse nine, Paul speak. Now listen very carefully because you know, those, you brothers you've even used this many times in sharing with people, the gospel, but in Romans nine, we see in verse nine, Paul speak Romans 10, nine, got Paul's speak of believing with or in the heart. And then in verse 10 of Romans 10, he repeats. The heart and the Bible is use of the heart. The meaning goes beyond the seat of affection or emotion. That's how we often interpret the heart is the seat of one's emotions of their affections. It is. In fact, as Hendrickson says in his commentary on Romans, it is in fact, quote, the hub of the will. Of human existence and life, the hub of the will of human existence and life. In fact, mounts in his Greek study. Who mentioned that the word Kardia, which is the word translated, which we would get our word cardiac, a cardia from translate your heart here as covering a variety of activities. And he's wanting specifically to point out that in that variety of activities, that the heart is used in context of his includes thinking. So contrary to the idea that believing the gospel is a mindless endeavor. Our previous lossiness, which darkened our understanding is remedied at regeneration so that we may comprehend and come to know to learn Christ in a truly saving way. When a person is saved, they become a new creation. I'll say more on that later, and their mind acquires. Their mind acquires by sovereign act of God's grace, a new way, a new capability to think, or up thinking a new capacity for understanding. So we've also had those conversations with people when we've shared the gospel. And these are the ones that are more enjoyable to us. We'd have to admit that when we have taken the time to share the gospel with people, And as we've in the process of sharing it, it is almost like rather than the proverbial dare deer in the headlights. Look, it is almost as if we look in their eyes, a light comes on and suddenly we perceived that all of a sudden, almost out of nowhere in the midst of our conversation, what has happened to them is the supernatural ability. To not only hear with their ears, what we are claiming for, to them are proclaiming to them, but the capability of understanding it and comprehending it so that in some cases, which I'm sure that most of us have experienced as we've shared the gospel, there will be those times when those who we are sharing the gospel with. We are evangelizing as we use that word to describe that there will be this response after giving them the gospel, you will know immediately they'll look at you. What must I do then? I believe that what you're telling me is absolutely true. Now, how do they get to that point? Well, they just wised up. No, they got to that point. Because by an act of God's sovereign grace, he divinely enabled them again, not only to hear the words you were speaking, but to comprehend the depth of what you were sharing to them, their lack of capability and capacity beforehand was now divinely enabled by the grace of God, through the regenerating power of the Holy spirit. And by virtue of that, They come to saving faith in Christ. They have become a new creature. Their mind acquired it. As I said, as a sovereign act of God's grace, a new way to think a new capacity for understanding, therefore to learn Christ results in a life that is transformed completely. So rather than dismissing the importance of the mind. It actually in a true sense, begins with the regeneration of the mind, God, enabling the mind to hear, to understand, to comprehend and ultimately to believe now, look at verse 21, Paul then says something very interesting in verse 21, he says, he says, assuming that you have heard about him, And were taught in him as the truth is in Jesus. And we know this historically, we turn to the book of acts, acts chapter 19 and next chapter 20 verses 17 through 35. When Paul is with the Ephesians elders, that my leaders prior to his leaving to go back to Jerusalem. We know that Paul taught at emphasis spent an extensive amount of time. Paul would work basically all day and then every evening would teach them for hours, sometimes six or more hours, teaching them nightly in regards to the faith. Therefore, it is safe to assume that the believers that Paul is writing to, they had not only heard the gospel, but they had been taught correctly. As an apostle or an ambassador of Christ. Paul taught the truth of the gospel that was in Jesus Christ. In other words, he told him. I brought to you not only brought to you the gospel, but I taught you the gospel. I was not ashamed to declare for you. He tells you Ephesians elders in acts 20. I was not ashamed to declare to you the full or whole counsel of God that is to give you the whole truth of the gospel. I laid it out very clearly for you. And then by extension Paul's teaching also reach beyond those who he had taught personally in his immediate company. And Paul assumes those. He is writing to have, then indeed taught the truth. Next we see the practical context or the content, I'm sorry of Paul's teaching of the truth in Jesus. That truth had to do with the change. The transformation that has was to have taken place. Look at verse 22. He says to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires. Let's pause for a minute and go back and say this, going to make sure that I didn't pass over quickly. The change that takes place in our minds and our thoughts and our reasoning, our intellect. When we are regenerated and we hear the gospel, we believe the gospel faith in Christ is to translate into a life that is changed. It is not merely just a mental assent to body of beliefs or doctrine. It is to translate into train, to change lives. And that's the point Paul makes throughout this entire chapter. Manir specifically says to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life. Paul first deals with a negative action, which is often the case when he teaches, he says to put off now the Greek verb translated here, put off, carries the idea. You can picture it literally like this of stripping off as in the case of removing filthy the clothes. This has been given new meaning during this quote pandemic end of quote. And that I've heard of people that are so paranoid of being out in the public during the day that oftentimes they'll come in their homes via their garage and strip off their clothing, immediately throw them in the washing machine and wash them, not even walking in the house with their shoes on because they don't want to bring any germs in the house. That's the idea of literally stripping off filthy garments, stripping off filthy clothes. Now the tense of the verb indicates again, a onetime and at the same time, a permanent action. Again, an action that happened at the moment of salvation was accomplished the metaphor of removing. A filthy garment is explicit. I don't know how he could make that any clearer. That's kind of one oppose ways of communicating. He loves that takes a putting off and putting on, but it's pretty explicit. What was the filthy garment? So to say that they are to put off, it really matters that we understand this, the filthy garment, the metaphor of putting off has to do with the old self. There should be no doubt. The old self here. Means the person they were by nature prior to learning Christ. I won't go through and survey us this morning, but I just about would be willing to wager if I was a wagering person. If I spoke to you as believers this morning, you would attest to the reality and the fact that something happened in your life, not merely something, but what transpired in your life when you came to Christ, there was a change. There was a difference that was made not only the way that you thought. But consequently subsequently the way that you began to live. And that's exactly what he's talking about here. In fact, this is a language similar to what Paul uses in Colossians three. In fact, in Colossians three, five, he writes this way, he says, put to death. Therefore, what is earthly in you? What does that mean? Well, I mean, my flesh, my bones, my skin, my scout, my hair. I mean, is that what he means? No. When he says everything that is earthly, he means everything. That is what worldly in nature, everything that would be indicative would represent the way that I would think and the way that I would conduct or behave myself or walk prior to coming to Christ, that is to be put to death. In fact it is, has been put to death and knelt with Christ on the cross at Calvary. And then in verse nine, I've cautioned three. He goes on to say, seeing that you have here use that same verb again, put off the old self. So what we read in Ephesians, we read later in the book of Colossians in regards to the old self, the old self is there for believer. Is that unregenerate dipped preyed nature once possessed at the moment of our conception, we are called, we call that original sin and the moment of our conception and carried until coming to faith in Jesus Christ. The old self biblically is identified with the former life. Meaning the life that we live, the walls that we walk prior to regeneration and prior to conversion. What about this old self? What about this old nature? This that was earthly in us. What characterized it? Well, Paul, doesn't leave it up to our imagination. He goes on to tell us that what characterize it here. Two things, corruption. And deceitful desires. You don't want, this is addressing, right? This is addressing in the truest sense. What we call total depravity. The word corruption carries the idea of growing increasingly corrupt and other words that faults theology that teaches that every man is born pure and sinless and stainless in the sin is something he learns. In fact, all babies are born pure and clean and Holy and the sin just comes later as they learn progressively how to sin within you. Haven't had children. And I've often jokingly said that if you don't believe it, put two hungry infants facing each other and put a bottle between them and watch what happens. That's just a slight illustration of the depravity that rest within human hearts. From the moment of conception that stays with a person all the way through their lives until coming to Christ, that corruption, that idea of growing increasingly corrupt, every trait in the old selves conduct was rotten to the core. You send me to, I don't know that that troubles me. I mean, I really I'm really of the persuasion that all people are basically just good people. Well, I mean, you might be of that persuasion and perhaps in some ways it may seem noble to think that highly of people, however, it is not the way the Bible defines our old self. In fact, if you wanted to see an explicit illustration of how God sees the unregenerate, you need only look at Romans chapter three verses nine through 20. I'm not even going to go there this morning. I remember years ago when we did our exposition of Romans, I was so glad to get out of Romans three. I felt like I had had just been trying to walk through quicksand. Because it is, it is so immediate begins in Romans chapter one, verse 16, especially in Romans one 18 when the wrath of God being revealed against all righteousness and all and godliness of men. And then he goes right on to the end of chapter three and it exposes to us the true nature of regenerate, everything. Everything from lying to the list goes on not being able to speak the truth. So we see that corruption. And the unregenerate just don't get in one level of corruption that corruption continues to increase exponentially. And every trait of the old self conduct was rotten to the core. Now it goes on to say deceitful desires, which a way to interpret that it simply means lost because that word Epic, the Mia is used. There means the loss driven by deceit or that, which is not true. Lost driven by the deceit that if I engage in this sinful conduct or this sinful activity, it will satisfy me and make me happy. How many times have we learned in the past that, that isn't always never hardly the way that it works out. So Paul uses this expression to enhance the idea of total corruption. So again, characterizes the old self corruption. And deceitful desires. The imperative to the believer can be summed up this way, see to it that you have divested yourself of everything that characterizes the old self. That is your previous unregenerate nature. See to it. That you divest yourself of everything that characterizes what you were prior to coming to Christ. How many times have we had that discussion that a person may prefer that all day long, that they no Christ that they have learned Christ. And yet if there is absolutely nothing. In their conduct in their walk, that would exemplify what they are, professing and overs. They do not possess what they are. Professing. There is a real, okay. Now Paul deals with the old self. What are we to do with the old self? It is to have been what put off. And now Paul turns his attention to the positive. He accepts your accentuates, the positive action that the believers to take. He does this in two parts. I look at what he says here. Verse 23, he begins by saying, be renewed in the spirit of your minds. Don't miss this portion. Before there can be a new way of living. There must be, as I've already said, a new way of thinking, there has to be a change. In fact, that's been the problem with legalism. One of the problems with legalism, legalism forever is they feel like that if it could merely change the outside of a person. By giving them a list of do's and don'ts, and saying, if you can do these things and don't do these things, you'll be okay. When in reality, in some cases there's been no transformation inwardly of the person. And so we see people that we will try to reason with better. They do certain things, it can be good people that can even be Christians. And they'll give themselves four season to try to do these things. And ultimately somewhere down the road, you'll see a disasters train wreck in their lives. And when you have a conversation with them, this is what you hear. I just couldn't live up to that standard. And the reason they couldn't live up to that standard is primarily because the standard they were attempting to live up to. How were they trying to live up to it? In their own strength. Only outside there had been no real change, no real transformation that had taken place on the inside of them. Paul is saying to us, when there has been that change, that happens on the inside. When regeneration has truly taken place, we have been given a new capacity to believe the gospel and to receive the gospel. It will by very nature, permeate. All of who we are will change not only the way we think, but the way that we live it is to change the way we live the mind that was regenerate by nature of such a mind we saw in verses 17 and 18 has to be renewed as a single act initially of regeneration. And then that mind continues to be renewed. As the believer grows in the knowledge of truth and of Christ word. So even though learning Christ is a onetime act in the sense of coming to saving faith in Christ does it in there. We know better than that. Don't we, we do come to saving faith in Christ and having learned Christ in a saving way, but how do we continue to have our minds renewed in Christ? By giving ourselves, I giving ourselves to study to meditation on God's truth, the truth of Christ given to us in God's word our mind. In other words, when we get saved, even though he changed has taken place. A transformation has taken place. It is not complete. We are suddenly not. And I'll deal with this more. Just the moment. We're not taken from a state of being unregenerate to a state of ultimate perfection or glorification. In fact, from the moment of that initial regeneration, coming to know Christ or learning Christ in salvation to the time, however long God gives us in his Providence to live our lives on this earth is a process of where it began here at the moment of our salvation is a process ultimately leading to our glorification, which happens either at our death. When we go to meet him or at his appearance in the sky, when we meet him in the air. Everything in between, between there is a continuing renewal of our minds in regards to the truth of Jesus Christ. The, we call that sanctification and sanctification is not just an instantaneous perfection. Sanctification is the process of growing in Christ likeness. But this essential renewal that I've spoken of here in this aspect, this essential renewal was important because at this initial renewal, the believer received by God's grace, a new spiritual and listen moral capability. Now, going back to what I said while I go to the person that says to you, well, you know, I'm not Christian anymore because I just couldn't live up to the standards. I just couldn't live that life. It was just too much to live with them. My response, when someone tells me, well, you know, the Christian life, I just can't live the Christian life. And I went well. I agree with you. Absolutely. Because if you're trying to live it in your own power, without the transformation that is already supposed to have taken inside of you, it is impossible for every single one of us. Not a single one of us in the sound of my voice this morning left to your own strength and ability and power and mental capacity could live this life. One moment we couldn't do it. It is essential that we have Christ and the grace of God continually poured out into our lives. But we've been given a new moral capability because what happens at regeneration? Not only are we brought to life spiritually, but now we are empowered to live morally what we have now professed to believe. There's no one that does with boasting. Think about that for a moment. What does that do to the concept of boasting? There is absolutely no place for human boasting in regeneration, you didn't suddenly become wise unto salvation on your own. On your own. Had God the Holy spirit, not supernaturally renewed by a sovereign act. Of regeneration, your mind, my mind, you and I would still be lost at this very moment. We must never forget that when you don't forget that guess where your boasting is in your salvation, but for the grace of God, when we see an unregenerate person, when we share the gospel with an unregenerate person and they turn from us and walk away without. Believing without hearing rather than somehow thinking, well, I'm sure glad I was smarter than they are here should be our response. But for the grace of God, that would have been me because the word not for the grace of God, that would have been every single one of us. But for the grace of God, none of us would've ever heard, none of us would have ever believed. None of us would have ever been saved, had God not exempt fide his grace by showing it to us in a saving way. Verse 24 eight, he says, so first in verse 23, we're told to be renewed in the spirit of your minds and verse 24 eight, the first part of verse 24, he says, and to put on here's the contrast to putting off, he says, and to put on. The new self, just as something is to be taken off, put off something is to be put on me. Let me say it to you like this, our salvation, our, our regeneration and conversion doesn't happen. And then we're left in a vacuum. What do I do now? Okay. I've put that off. What about now? Along with that inseparable with putting off is to put on, put on the new self metaphor. Metaphorically speaking, one garment is what one garment is stripped off. And then what happens another garment is put on in his place. Now part of that happens spiritually invisibly to us. When you think of it this way, that at the moment of our salvation, the moment of our justification, when we come to saving faith in Christ, what happens to our unrighteousness? It is done away and the righteousness of Christ is applied to our lives. So if at that moment of regeneration, five minutes after regeneration, And salvation justification. I worked to drop dead or a person that has come to Christ or to drop dead. And they were to immediately stand in the presence of God and the presence of Christ. How would they stand? Where they, as they were before they came to the alter or wherever it was, they accepted Christ. No, they stand before him as those who are justified in Christ clothed in the righteousness of Jesus Christ. So in one way, God does this sovereign beautiful work of stripping us of the old nature, clothing us in the righteousness of Christ. And yet at the same time, we are told to put off and then to put on what is this new self? What is it? Well, we talked about the old self for a moment. Talk about the new self. It is the new creation that happens at regeneration. I've often thought. How wonderful it would be if God, for a moment at the salvation of a person would, uh, would kind of pull the veil back from our eyes just for a moment and let us see what just really happened to see the beauty. Of what regeneration and salvation really is the sea as it were the old self, the old man that man dead in trespasses and sin kind of fall powerless as, as a, as a set of old clothing, falling to the ground, and then suddenly be able to see that person spiritually dressed in the righteousness of Christ, what a beautiful sight. And yet it's real. That is really what happens. It is a new creation that happens at regeneration. When a person is saved, they become new. There's two Greek words that are used to Greek adjectives that are used and translate a new kindness and Neoss and the Greek and they're synonyms both used in regards to human nature. For instance, we see Neoss using in Colossians chapter three, verse 10 in regards to the new self, but that's not the word Paul uses here. Is not, neither is the word that he uses a second Corinthians five 17 in second Corinthians five 17. This is what we read. He says, therefore, if anyone is in Christ, in Christ as a Pauline expression for salvation, he is a new creation kind of key toss in the Greek. The old archaic has passed away. Behold, the new has come. New creation. What does it mean new creation? If any man be in Christ, he is what a new creation. What does that mean? That means he is all together. Different qualitatively. You are no longer the same qualitatively as you were prior to coming. Christ what's happened. The old that, which was, has done what has passed. Away the verb from which we get the phrase, this phrase passed away means something that has come to an end. I'm just pausing for a moment. Warning us to think what glorious, marvelous work. Our salvation really is. That what we were at that moment came Tony and amazing, absolutely amazing. We are sadly though, keenly aware that evil and sin. Are not yet totally eradicated. That will be wonderful when it happens. But we do know because we are new. We have become able to see things in a completely different light. How many of you would testify this morning? As soon as you've been a Christian, you see things in a completely different light regenerated persons perspective is no longer. The same, the things that were of value to you and that life are no longer of any value to you or should not be those things, which you held tenaciously to in that life have suddenly become the things you have turned loose of only to hold more tenacious. These are the person of Christ who has become, I pray for all of us, what really matters in our lives. Because in reality, truly, as we sing many times in this song that we sing, all that we have is Christ and I've got good news for you. It's all that you, he is all that you need. What does this new self like? And we'll finish up with this and we're almost done. What is this new self like? Well, verse 24 B tells you. This new self is created after the likeness of God. This was hard this week for me to get by, because I got to tell you, I went to the bookshelf and I just pulled books and I laid them on my desk. And I just went to this, this concept of creating in the lightness of God. Just, just capture me for the better part of a day until I realized I never go anywhere on my texts. If I've got sidetracked on this. But. When we've again, when we turned back to the beginning of Genesis, we see that when God created man, Adam, what, what, what was Adam like? What was Adam like? I'm not asking you to define his physical features. I mean, some may say, well, he must've been the epitome of a physical man, you know, when they get in there, conjure up in his eyes, this, this Superman looking figure. Handsome. And I'm not, that's not the point I'm trying to make. What, what was Adam like? Here's what we need to know. Here's what really is important for us to need to know that in his original state and the very moment that he was created, he perfectly reflected and mirrored the image of God. That's what matters. The study of the Amano day, we call it is far too comprehensive for our time here, but I will say that, that those somewhat complex and even mysterious to us now, prior to the fall, Adam reflected the image of God in absolute perfection. Now, Adam was not divine. God did not create added, create Adam divine, but he did reflect the image of God. In absolute perfection. And then something happens once Adam sinned. What happened to that image? I'm not, I have no reason to live and I wouldn't even propose that at the moment of the fall that suddenly happened. Something happened to Adam's physical countenance that may not have been the reality at all, but we do know that something did happen that, that perfect image of God that Adam reflected at his creation was now lost and was significantly marred. The image of God. The Margot day was defaced in Adam by his sin. Thank for a moment. What a tragedy, such a tragedy that it has since has, since that very event affected every man born of a woman with the exception of the Lord, Jesus Christ, who was himself? No son of Adam. But every generation, what was lost in Adam was restored in Christ. In fact, I love the way Calvin comments on this. When he was commenting on the new self, in his commentary on second Corinthians, five 17 also had his commentary on Ephesians. He makes this statement, the regeneration of the godly is indeed quote, nothing else than the formation of a new image of God in them. You see that created in the likeness of Christ that new creation. Is a recreation in the lightness of Christ that which was lost in Adam is regained in Christ. As we look forward with eager anticipation to when we will see him face to face. And at that moment that transformation will become complete. We will see him as he is, because at that very moment, you will be like him. He goes on to say that the second creation is a far more rich and powerful manifestation of divine grace. Then the first I thought about that, because that's a profound statement, but when you pause and consider what really happens at regeneration and conversion, You can truly understand what the commentator was saying. Think for a moment. Think with me for a moment as marvelous as the act of initial creation was God taking the dust of the earth forming man, and then breathing into him, the breath of life. Marvelous, indeed. How marvelous. Might I dare say, carefully and cautiously. How many more marvelous is the act of taking that, which is dead in trespasses and sin. That which has become so corrupt that is in league with the devil himself, a son of disobedience. That, which by nature is now worthless, capable of doing no good that which walks passives, ruin and misery who left themselves, who lifted themselves, have no fear of God and are therefore destined to hell how much more marvelous if God had that God takes that kind of person and gives new life. That was you. And that was me. That was all of us. That's what I believe we would see the MARAC the marvelous, miraculous, overwhelming sight. We would perceive if God were to merely open our eyes at the moment of our regeneration and seeing us be made new somehow allowing us to see with spiritual eyes. Something who wants again, someone who once again, reflects the glory of God, the image of God that which was corrupt marred, defiled deserving. Only the wrath of God has been created. New, created new after the likeness of God. And he has done. So Paul writes look at the last part of our last statement. We'll look at this morning and he has done so and true righteousness and holiness we've been made new in true righteousness and holiness. True righteousness speaks to our justification before God. Those who were once alienated from God at enmity with God have now been brought before God to stand righteously in his presence through Christ. So he speaks to our justification before God. I said it to you. And the moment of regeneration, we stand in the righteousness of Christ. At that moment. If we were to call, be called to the very throne of God, we could stand without any enmity between us. Hallelujah. We now have a new standing. Before God and thereby new relationship with him, but he just says a merely say in true righteousness, he also adds and what and holiness while true righteousness has to do with our new standing before God. Holy is on the other side. On the other hand, has everything to do with how we are to serve him in this new relationship. We have been justified. We stand righteous before God truly righteous before him. And as a result of that, our new creation, our new self is to live a life of holiness. That is the way in which we are to serve him and this new relationship and true righteousness has to do with our position. Holiness has to do with our practice, our manner of walk. Paul's not done, but we are at least for this morning and it's a hard place to stop. It really is no place to stop because you can just keep right on going. But I want us to think about what we've heard this morning. What. We are to have put off what it is we are to have put on what our regional and conversion salvation really entails. Being made new in Christ. New created not only the image and likeness of Christ, but in true righteousness and holiness, our position and our practice before him. Let's bow our heads and pray. Father. I feel as though I have moved extremely quickly through a lot of very pertinent information. I trust by God's grace, that you will take the preaching of your word this morning. You will help us. Not only understand, but to receive it into our hearts, that it might continue to do the work of renewal and transformation in us that you purpose for it to accomplish with that said father, even with that said, If there is one among us this morning, either in person or listening to us via one of the means that this is going out this morning, that at this moment could not say with any confidence or assurance that they have truly come to know Christ have yet to learn Christ. I pray father, that the conviction of your spirit would rest heavily upon them. And that you would grant them by your grace. The ability to not only hear this morning, but to believe. And to receive that they might by faith and in faith come and trust Christ, truly trust Christ for their salvation. Having put off the old and putting on the new, becoming that new self that we've just spoken of this morning, I pray that you would grant your glorious and great salvation to that person or those ones this morning that have heard. I pray this in jesus' name. Amen.
