After 30 years as a cosmetologist, Sharon founded the “Angels with Scissors” organization, with 150 hairstylists and 43 hair salons, to enable a hair salon for the homeless at the Roanoke Rescue Mission. The organization’s goal was successful, and they raised the funds to build a hair salon inside the Mission’s Women and Children’s building, where volunteers come in to give free haircuts to the homeless.
After retiring from her career in cosmetology, she began her undergraduate work in Studio Arts obtaining her degree from Hollins University in 2009 and later received a Masters of Liberal Arts in 2013. Because her maternal grandparents were Appalachian Mountain dairy farmers, she uses Appalachian themes such as quilting, storytelling, farming and gardening, and mountain landscapes as themes of her artwork.
