Hey guys and welcome back to another episode of your Brains Coach podcast. My name is Angela Shurina, I'm your host, I'm your Brains Coach, I'm your executive coach, with more than 15 years of experience in the field of coaching, and it is my job here to bring to you my explorations, my learnings, the best tools from performance and behavioral psychology, from the field of coaching and personal success, personal development, self-mastery and self-optimization all these well-researched tools and scientific and my personal experience of personal growth, and also instances and examples and tools and interesting hacks that we stumble upon with our clients while trying all these tools and techniques and strategies right. So it's all going to be here, and usually on this podcast we spend topics around three major pillars your health, your biology, things like neurobiology, neuroscience, how your brain and your body work together separately and how that then shapes your psychology, your mindset, what you think, how you think, what your perspective on the world and things in it, what your beliefs are, and that your biology and your psychology then shape the systems that you use for your work, for your execution, for your actions taken. And these pillars, they're not separate. They are in this constant feedback loop. One influences the other, like how you set up your working place will influence how your biology works and how much energy you have. They did studies that in cluttered spaces you experience more stress physiologically. It's all connected. And then that clutter also affects your mindset and what kind of thoughts and emotions you have and that in turn will feed back into your work ethic and what you accomplish day to day. It's such a beauty. It's like a way of all these different elements that never stops, never ends, and you can intersect into that looping at many different points and that's the power of it.
Speaker 1But that is also what makes it more complex and sometimes feel like tricky. You just never know what's. You know this chicken and egg question Like what should I work on first to change this situation? Usually, what you should work on first is the thing that is easier for you, like from where you are, exactly where you are right now. What's the easiest thing for you to intersect that cycle to then change this feedback loop. So it's a virtuous kind of loop and leads you forward and upwards, versus vicious kind of loop that leads you into this downward spiral direction. So, anyhow, that's about this podcast and what my mission and purpose and vision is and what I'm delivering or on a mission to deliver to you guys.
Speaker 1But besides that, the topic of today's podcast is very important and an essential, I would say, for any human being If you want to have a meaningful, fulfilling life experience. You got to figure this out, you got to figure your purpose out, so you do have the limitless drive, the limitless motivation, the limitless energy. So, even on the hardest days, something picks you up, lifts you up and you are on fire, running after this vision that you have, that set your soul on fire. Guys, today we're talking about how to unlock limitless, your own limitless source of drive, of motivation, of energy. I'm often asked, angela, how do I motivate myself? How do I overcome procrastination? How do I have more energy for things that I want and that I want, for the goals that I want, but actions that I don't always want to take, like, how do I get myself doing the things that are often hard, that I don't want to do, that are uncomfortable? And purpose is the answer. Purpose is the unlock.
Speaker 1This limitless source of energy, drive and motivation is inside of each of you and well, it's called intrinsic motivation, actually, and intrinsic motivation refers to this idea of drive to engage in activities. I'm reading you a meaning from dictionary Intrinsic motivation, drive to engage in activities that are inherently interesting or enjoyable, without external incentives or rewards, things like money, status, some sort of other external rewards in the world. So rewards, guys, they come and go. Sometimes they're there, sometimes they're not, and in order to make this cycle of rewards over long-term consistent, you gotta show up even if there is no reward, because ultimately, if you do pursue value creation, mastering selves, getting better, creating more value in the world, rewards will come. But they don't always come every day and sometimes it feels like you're just running on this treadmill that never leads anywhere. So rewards come and go, but your drive to achieve is actually ever-present when you know how to lead it up and the purpose is the unlock, purpose is your lighter which leads up that internal drive of motivation and energy and discipline to pursue, to work on hard things. The purpose is your lighter, is your igniter for the engine of getting things done. But here's the thing, here's the tricky thing, where I feel like a lot of people stumble, where I feel like a lot of people stumble, you don't just kind of arrive or stumble or get some mushrooms in and you figure out your purpose although with mushrooms might happen I haven't tried but usually purpose is not something you get by chance or wake up enlightened. No, it's something you dig for, it's something you work for, it's something that you embark on a journey to discover.
Speaker 1I'm currently, for example, I've been doing to give you a background of personal history. I started this personal development journey Now I'm 37, so I started it around 13, 14. When I was 13, 14, I picked up my first self-development book where I started doing different exercises. And so it's what? 20, yeah, 25 years, can you imagine 25 years? Can you imagine 25 years? That's how long my journey of personal development is. And I started journaling and I started meditation and I started listening to Tony Robbins yeah, even back then he's been around. I started doing a lot of things, from yoga to fasting, to reading all these different books, and I'm still not done.
Speaker 1Like this week, I'm taking a course on purpose mindset with a few Olympic athletes, guided by this top performance psychologist, dr Michael Grace, and I probably mispronounce his name all the time, but it's linked in the show notes, the link to that course. I'm not affiliated, but I'm taking it and I believe everyone needs to start their work on purpose and again, it's not something you arrive by chance, it's something you work on. So I'm taking this course. I've also gone through why discovery process done by Simon Sinek. He has this amazing book, finding your why. So not just why book, but actually the process, finding your why. I'm going through different resources at the moment as well, by Harvard Business Review Press. They have books on crafting your purpose and a lot of different resources, and this is hardcore business press and they are talking about purpose. Why is that? Well, because it's proven, it's science now that when you have strong sense of purpose aligned with what you do, you do a lot better and a lot more than just how human beings are designed. And I'm still going through this work to get better at helping my clients, yes, but to also figuring myself out a lot better.
Speaker 1It takes work. It's kind of like and it never stops. It's kind of like Michelangelo working on carving out or shaping his masterpieces from rock and you are that rock and you're just carving yourself out more and more and more and by the end of your life you might have glimpses of the diamond inside of you. The more work you do, the better the diamond gets throughout your life. Some people never do this work and never arrive at anyone. They come into this life as a rock and they live it as a rock. So are you going to be that person? Or are you going to work on shaping up this diamond, carving out your masterpiece like Michelangelo, your masterpiece like Michelangelo, right, your purpose? The journey? It also never stops. It's not one and done. It grows and changes as you do.
Speaker 1And so, if you want to unlock that limitless source of energy, of drive, of motivation, of this hunger that they say the greatest entrepreneurs have, purpose is where you start, and it's not something that comes to you, it's something that you work for. And a good. One of the best ways to start that journey is to start asking yourself the right questions, and I'm going to share with you three questions from this course that I'm taking. Start there and then check out the course linked in the show notes Again not affiliated, but it's amazing short, like really well done. I think it is still available. I think it's like 70 something bucks of. I think it's like 70 something bucks. So, purpose, start with these questions and then see how it changes your mind and then see maybe, hey, there is something about this questioning and digging into my mind and self-inquiry that might lead to some good places. So three questions that will start your journey to discovering your purpose.
Speaker 1Question number one what are three major accomplishments that you are really proud of, like, really really proud of, and what is it about them that makes you proud? Like, what is the theme between these three accomplishments? Don't just think of one three so you can see the theme. Like when I did that, I'm like, yeah, there is definitely a theme. Question number two what are three situations recently in your life, or repeating, that make you or made you angry and frustrated? These are usually the moments when your values are violated, when you're like you know this is who I am, even though you might not think about that, and this thing angers me or frustrates me. Don't try to brush it off, this feeling. Just lean into that, remember those instances and again, try to think of themes like what is it there that makes me so angry and frustrated? And I could pinpoint like three themes right away. I'm like, yeah, this is what makes me angry. I used to think that I'm not an angry person, but these things they lit my fire and they are connected to my purpose. Very much so. Question number three what gives you energy? Name three activities that you engage in that light you up, that after them and during doing them, you feel like your cup is full. What are those three activities? Again, let me repeat the questions. So, question number one what are three accomplishments that you're really proud of and what it is about them that makes you proud? Question number two what are three situations that made you, or make you, angry and frustrated? Again, these are the moments when your values are usually violated. And number three what gives you energy? Name three activities that light you up and keep your cup full?
Speaker 1Get a pen, get a piece of paper and go write it down. I also want to remind you that writing is not the same as typing, because the process of writing down when every letter is different and you use your hand in very specific motion pattern not the same as typing, when every letter is the same. And, plus, you learned how to write much earlier in your life. You were not born with typing and because of that, it engages different brain circuits in your brain. So typewriting is not the same as typing. So do this self-discovery work if you want to get maximum value out of it through writing Just a piece of paper. I personally have this notebook where I do my self-discovery work and I do this exercise there. Get writing, set your timer on 20 minutes, no less than that. More is there. Get writing, set your timer on 20 minutes, no less than that. More is better, but I prefer timer because then I don't feel like it's. You know, I don't know how long it's going to take. So 20 minutes. Piece of paper, pen and write it down.
Speaker 1The eternal well of energy and drive and motivation is within each of you, guys, and you hold the keys. So don't hope. Hope is not a good strategy. You're not going to arrive on your purpose by chance. Do the work and you'll be surprised how just doing one little piece, discovering what's most meaningful for you, why you live your life the way you do, how it's going to transform your life beyond your wildest expectations. That's it for today, guys.
