places in our life where maybe we are dependent on ourselves, some places in our life where maybe there's pride, some places in our life where he needs to mature us and change us and sanctify us, set needed to be worked through that couldn't go to the place that Jesus wanted to take him. 00:03:38.319 --> 00:03:46.159 Peter had some heart things, and Jesus was going to break him down because Jesus name for the Sea of Galilee. 00:04:54.720 --> 00:04:57.120 This is where Jesus did a lot of his miracles. 00:04:57.360 --> 00:05:01.519 He did a lot of them on the Sea of Galilee or around the Sea of called twin, Nathaniel from Cana of Galilee, Zebedee sons, and two others of his disciples, the disciples of Jesus, they were together. 00:05:21.600 --> 00:05:26.240 Verse number three, I'm going fishing, Simon Peter said. 00:05:26.639 --> 00:05:28.560 We're coming with you, they told him. 00:05:28.720 --> 00:05:36.800 Now, if you're a fisherman in the room, when somebody says, I'm going fishing, which was their livelihood, which is what God um which is uh what they what they had done until Jesus met them on the same shore, the Sea of Galilee, and had called them to no longer go fishing, but to be fishers of men. 00:06:34.079 --> 00:06:36.399 Now Jesus had died, he had resurrected. 00:06:36.560 --> 00:06:38.000 We talked about that last week. 00:06:38.240 --> 00:06:49.040 And now what they've done, instead of being fishers of men, what they've done is they've gone back to what's comfortable and what's normal and just what's kind of socially acceptable. 00:06:49.279 --> 00:06:52.480 In fact, it's a good thing because that's their livelihood. 00:06:52.639 --> 00:06:55.040 So they're like, well, Jesus resurrected. 00:06:55.199 --> 00:07:00.319 We know that he wants us to be fishers of men, but right now we're just gonna go out and fish. 00:07:00.480 --> 00:07:02.399 And this is what they had done. 00:07:02.720 --> 00:07:11.600 They had traded the best thing, what Jesus had called them to do, for a good thing, what they were used to doing. 00:07:11.920 --> 00:07:17.519 Sometimes what we think in our lives is we think all of our decisions are between what's good and what's bad. 00:07:17.759 --> 00:07:21.759 Sometimes the decisions are between what is good and what is best. 00:07:22.399 --> 00:07:32.800 And what's happened here is the apostles have said, hey, hey, hey, we're gonna go back to fishing, even though Jesus has called us to be fishers of men. 00:07:33.040 --> 00:07:37.759 And what they don't realize is Jesus is about to meet them right where they are. 00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:44.879 And verse number four, it says this it says, When daybreak came, Jesus stood on the shore. 00:07:45.199 --> 00:07:47.759 But disciples, they didn't know it was Jesus. 00:07:49.120 --> 00:07:53.600 Friends, Jesus called to them, You don't have any fish, do you? 00:07:54.319 --> 00:07:56.480 That's a rhetorical question. 00:07:57.199 --> 00:07:59.120 No, they answered. 00:08:03.439 --> 00:08:04.800 And you'll find some. 00:08:05.839 --> 00:08:06.800 So they did. 00:08:07.279 --> 00:08:12.399 And they were unable to haul it in because of the large number of The one, the one Jesus loved. 00:08:29.519 --> 00:08:33.360 He says, it he said to Peter, It is the Lord. 00:08:33.840 --> 00:08:47.039 When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tied his outer clothing around him, free had taken it off, and he plunged into the sea, since they were not far from land, about a hundred yards away. 00:08:47.360 --> 00:08:52.960 The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish. 00:08:54.720 --> 00:09:00.000 And when they got out on the land, they saw uh, what are those two words? 00:09:00.159 --> 00:09:02.480 They saw a charcoal fire. 00:09:03.840 --> 00:09:05.440 Make a note of that. 00:09:08.240 --> 00:09:11.279 With fish lying on it and bread. 00:09:11.759 --> 00:09:15.200 Bring some of the fish you've just caught, Jesus told them. 00:09:15.360 --> 00:09:23.039 So Simon Peter climbed up and hauled the net ashore full of large fish, 153 of them. 00:09:23.519 --> 00:09:25.840 Simon Peter must be pretty strong. 00:09:26.720 --> 00:09:29.840 Even though there were so many, the net was not torn. 00:09:30.159 --> 00:09:32.320 Come and eat breakfast, Jesus told him. 00:09:32.559 --> 00:09:35.039 None of the disciples dared ask him, Who are you? 00:09:35.360 --> 00:09:38.240 Because they knew it was the Lord. 00:09:39.519 --> 00:09:45.600 Jesus came, he took the bread and gave it to them, and he did the same with the fish. 00:09:46.080 --> 00:09:54.559 This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. 00:09:56.320 --> 00:10:01.279 Now we get to the next section of scripture in verse 15 in a minute. 00:10:02.080 --> 00:10:15.120 And we're gonna see this interaction that Jesus had with Peter that was emotionally charged, that was life-altering, that changed the trajectory of Peter's life. 00:10:15.840 --> 00:10:21.840 Because Jesus was about to remind Peter of the calling that he had on him. 00:10:22.639 --> 00:10:29.200 And some of you in the room, you need to hear this is that God has a calling on your life. 00:10:30.480 --> 00:10:33.360 Some of you are aware of the calling that God has had on your life. 00:10:33.519 --> 00:10:39.519 Some of you are unaware of the calling that God has on your life, but God has a calling on your life. 00:10:39.919 --> 00:10:46.320 And what Peter is going to have happen to him is Jesus is going to break him down. 00:10:47.120 --> 00:10:53.440 So Jesus can build him up and call him into the calling that he had for him. 00:10:53.840 --> 00:10:57.200 And he does it around a charcoal fire. 00:10:58.480 --> 00:11:05.840 Does anybody remember the one other time in scripture where there is a charcoal fire? 00:11:05.919 --> 00:11:06.960 And this is a hard question. 00:11:07.039 --> 00:11:08.399 Does anybody remember? 00:11:08.879 --> 00:11:10.159 The denial. 00:11:10.720 --> 00:11:12.000 The denial. 00:11:12.559 --> 00:11:16.799 Peter had denied Jesus around a charcoal fire. 00:11:17.679 --> 00:11:22.799 Now, the one other time in scripture we see a charcoal fire is right here. 00:11:23.039 --> 00:11:26.080 Now Peter is around a charcoal fire. 00:11:26.559 --> 00:11:30.320 When Peter denied Jesus, there were witnesses around. 00:11:30.559 --> 00:11:34.240 Now there's an in this charcoal fire, there's also people around. 00:11:34.320 --> 00:11:35.279 It's a public moment. 00:11:35.440 --> 00:11:36.960 The disciples are there. 00:11:38.480 --> 00:11:44.240 Around this charcoal fire where Peter denied Jesus, there was a question that was repeatedly asked. 00:11:44.399 --> 00:11:45.679 Do you know Jesus? 00:11:45.840 --> 00:11:47.759 Are you a follower of Jesus? 00:11:48.399 --> 00:11:54.159 Now there's about to be a repeated question that's going to be asked that Jesus asked him. 00:11:55.440 --> 00:12:03.759 There's these similarities between that charcoal fire and this one that's happening just a few days later. 00:12:05.279 --> 00:12:15.679 And here it happens, and here it goes down, and here's this emotionally charged, life-altering moment in Peter's life that literally changed his trajectory. 00:12:16.000 --> 00:12:18.399 It started with a question. 00:12:19.679 --> 00:12:20.799 Verse 15. 00:12:25.759 --> 00:12:30.799 Simon, son of John, do you, what's that word? 00:12:31.039 --> 00:12:34.639 Do you mean more than these? 00:12:35.360 --> 00:12:39.600 Now the word love here is the word agape. 00:12:40.879 --> 00:12:43.519 That's the word that's translated into love. 00:12:43.919 --> 00:12:48.799 Agape means completely sacrificial, completely committed. 00:12:49.279 --> 00:13:01.279 And at the Last Supper, not far before this, Jesus had stood at a sat at a table with all the disciples, and he said, Hey, hey, hey, uh, things are gonna happen. 00:13:01.360 --> 00:13:02.480 What are y'all gonna betray me? 00:13:03.679 --> 00:13:12.720 Peter says, Hey, hey, hey, Jesus, if if all of these guys, my boys, if they deny you and they forsake you, I ain't never gonna do it. 00:13:13.440 --> 00:13:16.240 Me, I'm I'm never gonna do it. 00:13:17.600 --> 00:13:22.480 I'm committed, I'm in, I'll sacrifice everything for you. 00:13:23.919 --> 00:13:29.919 So Jesus says, Simon, do you have that agape love more than these? 00:13:30.159 --> 00:13:33.600 These same disciples that were sitting at that table. 00:13:34.559 --> 00:13:39.600 Peter says, You know that I love you, but Peter doesn't use the word agape. 00:13:40.080 --> 00:13:41.759 Peter uses the word phileo. 00:13:41.840 --> 00:13:46.159 Phileo is a is a word for love that's less sacrificial than agape. 00:13:46.639 --> 00:13:48.480 It's like an affectionate type of love. 00:13:48.559 --> 00:13:51.279 Jesus, you know that I'm affectionate towards you. 00:13:52.480 --> 00:13:55.120 He doesn't say I have agape towards you. 00:13:55.440 --> 00:13:59.759 Because he remembers charcoal fire, charcoal fire. 00:14:01.440 --> 00:14:02.480 He's very well aware of this. 00:14:02.559 --> 00:14:08.639 He's like, he's like, I have phileo towards you, feed my lambs, Jesus told him. 00:14:08.960 --> 00:14:15.840 In verse number 16, a second time he asked him, Simon, son of John, do you what's that word? 00:14:16.000 --> 00:14:17.519 He asked someone, do you love? 00:14:17.679 --> 00:14:18.559 It's agape. 00:14:19.039 --> 00:14:25.440 Yes, Lord, he said to him, You know that I Phileo, I love you, shepherd my sheep. 00:14:26.080 --> 00:14:34.559 Now, when Jesus is saying, feed my lambs, shepherd my sheep, whenever you see sheep in scripture, it's referring to the people of God. 00:14:35.440 --> 00:14:44.000 So Jesus is literally telling Peter, who just denied him, I want you, I have a calling for you to feed the people of God. 00:14:45.039 --> 00:14:48.879 If I'm Jesus, I don't know if I trust Peter enough to do that. 00:14:49.519 --> 00:14:56.080 He's just denied, but yet Jesus is giving him a calling, he's reminding him of his calling. 00:14:56.480 --> 00:15:02.240 A third time in verse 17, Simon, son of John, do you love me? 00:15:03.679 --> 00:15:06.000 Peter, watch this word. 00:15:06.480 --> 00:15:08.799 Peter was grieved. 00:15:11.519 --> 00:15:14.080 This means intense sorrow. 00:15:15.039 --> 00:15:18.480 And when Jesus asks him this third time, do you love me? 00:15:18.799 --> 00:15:21.519 Jesus doesn't use the word agape here. 00:15:21.840 --> 00:15:23.840 He uses the word phileo. 00:15:24.480 --> 00:15:28.159 Jesus goes down to the level of Peter. 00:15:28.399 --> 00:15:33.120 And Peter, seeing all of this, is grieved in his heart. 00:15:37.440 --> 00:15:40.559 Peter's aware of his shortcomings. 00:15:41.440 --> 00:15:44.480 Peter's aware of his disobedience. 00:15:45.360 --> 00:15:49.360 Peter's aware that Jesus isn't even asking me about do I have full commitment? 00:15:49.440 --> 00:15:51.120 He's not even asking me for that kind of love anymore. 00:15:51.200 --> 00:15:53.039 It's apparent that I don't. 00:15:55.600 --> 00:15:58.799 And Peter responds by saying, Lord, you know that I love you. 00:15:59.200 --> 00:16:00.879 You know everything about me. 00:16:01.200 --> 00:16:03.200 Feed my sheep. 00:16:04.320 --> 00:16:08.480 And what Jesus has done here is he's he's gotten to the heart of Peter. 00:16:08.879 --> 00:16:22.240 He hasn't just shown the love that Peter doesn't have, but he's also revealed that Peter has failed because of Peter's pride, because of Peter's self-reliance. 00:16:22.799 --> 00:16:29.360 And what Jesus is doing here is Jesus was doing surgery on Peter's heart. 00:16:30.639 --> 00:16:35.200 If you've ever had surgery, you know it's painful. 00:16:36.879 --> 00:16:38.879 Surgery is not a lot of fun. 00:16:40.240 --> 00:16:44.240 And Jesus, verse 17, takes Peter to a place where Peter's grieving. 00:16:44.559 --> 00:16:47.360 Now you might say, Why would Jesus do this? 00:16:48.559 --> 00:16:54.720 I mean, why why would Jesus get him to a place where he's grieving about what he did? 00:16:55.039 --> 00:16:56.720 Is Jesus cruel? 00:16:57.360 --> 00:16:59.840 Is Jesus being like mean here? 00:17:01.039 --> 00:17:05.519 Doesn't Jesus care more about how Peter's doing than what Peter's doing? 00:17:06.000 --> 00:17:13.279 Why doesn't Jesus just like give Peter lots of affirmation in this moment and be like, Peter, I believe in you? 00:17:13.759 --> 00:17:17.759 Why does he take Peter to a place where Peter's grieving? 00:17:17.920 --> 00:17:23.680 That seems, especially in our culture, that's a very unloving thing for Jesus to do. 00:17:27.759 --> 00:17:36.559 But he loves Peter enough to break him down because he wants to use Peter in a mighty way. 00:17:36.960 --> 00:17:42.480 But there are things in Peter's life that cannot go to where God wants to take Peter. 00:17:42.799 --> 00:17:48.000 You see, Peter is up to this point is pretty cocky. 00:17:49.440 --> 00:17:56.400 Peter has the spiritual gift of being impulsive and reactionary and saying whatever he thinks. 00:17:57.759 --> 00:18:00.720 He puts his foot in his mouth very often. 00:18:01.759 --> 00:18:04.160 He has an unhealthy pride about him. 00:18:04.480 --> 00:18:05.599 He lacks faith. 00:18:05.839 --> 00:18:08.799 Jesus has rebuked him for his lack of faith. 00:18:10.160 --> 00:18:20.480 And the foundation of Peter's life, at the very core, is pride, is self-reliance, is arrogance. 00:18:21.680 --> 00:18:26.240 And the fruit of that was denying Jesus. 00:18:26.799 --> 00:18:36.880 And now Jesus is asking him questions to take him down to the roots of what's really going on in his life, and he's doing surgery on Peter's heart. 00:18:37.359 --> 00:18:44.880 And the reason why Jesus does surgery on Peter's heart is the same reason why doctors do
