Speaker 1:

Welcome to the award-winning Champions Mojo hosted by two world record-holding athletes. Be inspired as you listen to conversations with champions and now your hosts, kelly Palace and Maria Parker.

Speaker 2:

Hello friends, welcome to the Champions Mojo podcast. This is an unusual one. It's the request of some of our listeners. Maria and I have never answered the Sprint Around questions and we're going on five years on the show and some people just they must want to know what our favorite sandwiches are, because that's one of our questions. So, anyway, if you want to hang around and listen and get to know your co-host of the Champions Mojo podcast better, maria and I gave each other the Sprint Around questions, which we'll follow. Yeah, I think you're going to love it. All right, sprint Around, kelly. Kelly wants to know you a little bit better. So here's some quick questions. Take your mark.

Speaker 2:

What's your favorite sandwich? A Jimmy Joe, and what is a Jimmy Joe? A Jimmy Joe is a fresh summer tomato, gigantic beef steak on maybe white bread but I'm going to say any kind of bread would be a little healthier with tons of mayonnaise and a lot of salt. So, basically, a Jimmy Joe is a tomato sandwich. And after Jimmy Joe, right, your dad's friend from childhood, right? Yes, yes, great, it's great. I love Jimmy Joe's too.

Speaker 2:

What do you own that you should throw out? Old shoes, tennis shoes, sneakers, like I always think I'm going to get one more thing out of those running shoes and I just thought the Y word. They're collecting old shoes. So I got to throw away some old running shoes. That's good, before you go back to Florida, get rid of them. What's the scariest animal to you? A shark, yeah. What's the leverage you would you most like to meet Oprah Winfrey? I would love to meet Oprah because I would like to just thank her because she really impacted my life, so like I just loved her show and it was always inspiring and she was like the first person that kind of brought into focus, having a purpose. I just Oprah Winfrey, just love her, that's great, that's great.

Speaker 2:

What's the hardest swimming event in the pool? 1650. It's long, it's painful. It's 19 or 20 minutes of pain, even if you start hurting in the last half. It's 10 minutes of pain and, yes, the corner of I am is very painful.

Speaker 2:

Two-in-her breast is very painful. I've never even swam a 200 fly, so maybe I'm not educated enough to say that I've never swam a 200 fly, but I'm going to say 1650 or 1500. Okay, all right. Favorite movie I'm going to go with the swimming movie and I really love the movie Pride. It is a historic movie but it stars Terrence Howard, who I love. He's a great actor and it's the story of Jim Ellis' life. He's a swim coach who founded the Philadelphia Department of Rec Swim team, which I grew up swimming around in the DC area and it's a great movie about the black history of swimmers in that area and it's just super inspirational and it's fun because it's about swimming and it's got great acting and I have a lot of favorite movies.

Speaker 1:

I know.

Speaker 2:

Oh, swimming movie, that's great. I don't know if I've seen that. I'm going to have to look for it, but your favorite smell Gardenia Flowers. How nice, love it, love cartinates. Do you make your bed every morning? You betcha Kickboard or no kickboard, kickboard. Even Todd DeSorbo says kick with a kickboard. Why is that surprising? Some people don't kick with kickboards and I guess if it hurts your shoulders a lot of people get shoulder pain. But you can streamline better, you can pull it out of the walls when you don't have a kickboard but kickboards, you can talk, you can be social and you can totally have a brutally painful training on a kickboard. Yeah, I like the kickboard because it's the one event that I can almost keep up with Jim on. If we're kicking, I can't kick.

Speaker 1:

Oh, I love it yeah.

Speaker 2:

I wondered about the kickboard no kickboard question. Now you've sort of clarified why some people like it and some people don't. That's good, okay. If you have to listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be? My Sweet Lord by George Harrison? Or I have a new one. It's I Lose Control by Teddy Swims. This guy is brand new. He's been around for a while, but it's an original song and it's just random that his last name is Swims. That's funny. It's called Lose Control by Teddy Swims or my Sweet Lord by George Harrison. Great, okay.

Speaker 2:

Window or aisle Window, I'm suppressing you say that I would have thought you I know.

Speaker 2:

I don't look out. I like the clouds, I like the sky. Okay, describe your life in five words, mark. I think you're the first person we've interviewed who actually put a prepper down. I love it. I love it. Okay, one Mark Family, beer, swimming, creativity I love it. I think you've nailed yourself, haven't I? Yes, I'm very self-aware. You are, you are. That's one of your very best qualities. All right, this is it. What word or phrase comes to mind when you dive in the water? I'm home, I love it. Okay, maria, take your mark. Favorite sandwich? Oh man, a grilled cheese with fresh homegrown tomato. Oh my gosh. Yeah, that sounds really Can I change my sandwich? I'm going to say it to me, joe, for grilled cheese. Okay, what do you think you should throw out? No, I just came upon a stack of 16 swim caps from the various tournaments, so I need to get rid of those.

Speaker 1:

I don't throw out swimming Well-. The orphanage doesn't count.

Speaker 2:

All right. So really you want to throw out swim caps. There's lots of things I have. Too much jewelry I have probably too many clothes, too many books. There's a lot that I have that constantly struggle. But we learned from Hasna. We shouldn't throw them out. We should donate them, donate, absolutely donate. Yeah, that's it Of course. So swim caps are great for lead jar openers, just in case.

Speaker 1:

You can't have 16 of them, but.

Speaker 2:

I keep them in my car, I keep them as-. Well, I learned that the freebie swim caps aren't as good as the ones you've given me, the bought ones. So the silicone ones are better than the latex.

Speaker 2:

Okay, scariest animal to you, I think a dog. Believe it or not, I love dogs, but when you're on a bike or if you're out running and a dog is on the loose and they're running at you, that's probably one of the scariest things to me. Oh, my gosh, that makes perfect sense to be a cyclist and be scared of dogs.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, so it's like I love dogs, I love dogs, I own dogs. I love dogs, I love the people.

Speaker 2:

I love a dog on a leash. I just don't like a dog running free when I'm on my bike. Yeah, yeah, all right. What celebrity would you like to meet? This is going to sound funny, but Jimmy Carter, he oh God, you got to explain that one. He was elected president and he was a terrible president and yet he went on and did so much good stuff with his life and he just seems so sincere and just such a good man, married to his wife all those years and then he had Remember he got skin cancer that had metastasized and he survived that. Yeah, he's had such a long, rich life and he just seems like such a good person that he was made fun of. Remember how much fun they made when he was president. Yeah, so I just think I'd love to sit down and chat with him. I think he would be an amazing person. That's a great answer. He's 99. He will be 100 on October 1st 2024. He just lost Rosalind. Yeah, he's in hospice, but she just died. Oh, he is in hospice.

Speaker 1:

No, oh, that's a great answer.

Speaker 2:

Okay, I'm not sure you can answer this question, but I'm going to give it to you anyway. What is the hardest-forming event in the pool? For me would be butterfly, since I don't know how to shoot the butterfly. Any butterfly I've tried. I've never really worked at it consistently for a long period, but any event that has butter playing it would be the hardest event for me there. Favorite movie Well, you know we love Jerry McWire in our house.

Speaker 1:

Oh yeah, that's it. That is it, I know you if you give me any other?

Speaker 2:

movie. It's not right. I've seen some really good movies lately, but I think we'll just go with Jerry McWire. I can pretty much quote it. All right.

Speaker 2:

Favorite smell the smell of Dinner cooking. When I walk in to the kitchen and I have been gone all day the smell of whatever it is, doesn't matter what it is, it smells good. I like that. I don't get that experience. I haven't gotten it too much. Well, since Steven Morgan been staying with us, I've gotten it a lot more nice. Nice.

Speaker 2:

Do you make your bed every morning, maria? Yes, if my husband's not in it, okay, kickboard or no, kickboard, kickboard. And the reason is just Because I have a chance on the kickboard of beating Jim Maybe not beating him, at least keeping up with them. And I do love the social aspects of kickboard. Yeah, good, all right. If you had to listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be? Oh, black water by the Dubby brothers. Okay, that's my song that I Sing when I needed just keep on moving in my head, like on the bike or in the water. I just got it. It's just got to keep on rolling, just keep on. Yeah, you know what? Another song like that that I do for swimming all the time it's my ringtone is Roll with the changes.

Speaker 1:

Oh nice, are you a speed wagon? Yeah, yeah, that's another good one, yeah.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, roll with the changes. All right, roll a roll, okay, a window, for sure, I like to look at the window, I like to sleep against the window, window, window. Okay. Describe your life in five words rich, full family, love, progress. Very nice, rich, whole family, love, progress. That's five, all right, what word comes to mind? When you dive in the water, maria? I think I'm like you know, not a ah, but a Take a breath a gas gas. It's a gas. I wish I.

Speaker 2:

I wish I were Jim Parker or it's just oh gosh, yeah, I know it's tough being a new swimmer with the guy you're married to and your co-host. It's tough, that's all right, like I would feel if I got on a bike next to you. Yeah, all right, maria, this is an interesting little podcast. Yeah, I think it's gonna be fun, all right, I love you, I love you too.
