SPEAKER_05I have a movie called Thought She Was the One, directed by T.I., starring T.I., me, DC Young Fly, Terrence J, Britney Hall, Dominique Perry, Chameleon, Kelly Kells, Tyler Chronicle. I gotta shout out all the same. It is a it's a it's a family affair, uh, it's a comedy. It's premiering on uh Saturday at 6 30.

SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, that was a fun one. I mean, being being from LA, being able to do a movie for LA, about LA, that traverses the hood that I grew up in, that was a monumental experience for me for sure.
SPEAKER_04How long did you live in LA? My whole life, sure. Since 93, baby.
SPEAKER_01Born raised, yeah. Shout out to Cedar Sinai. Hey, man, don't bang on him. No, no, we heard that shit in here. Um, but yeah, nah, I mean, LA is that's home. So yeah, it's it felt good to be a representation of the city that I'm from in a movie for the city that I'm from. Okay.
SPEAKER_04Well, you on the East Coast now. We uh we actually talking a little East Coast versus West Coast vibes. What you wanna talk about? Uh we're gonna get into some music because I'll remember right now.
SPEAKER_03You can't but you came in here and you said let's play some Drake as soon as you came in here. That was the first thing you said in here.
SPEAKER_04Father, Drake could typically be East Coast, right?

SPEAKER_04I've actually, well, shout out Brittany too, she's over there. But I've been going to the West Coast more. I've been I've been liking LA. It's cool out there. So I mean, we have vibe out there.
SPEAKER_01I think LA gets a bad rep, just like a lot of transplants. No offense to anybody that moved to LA, but a lot of transplants feel like they have this preconceived notion of what LA is supposed to be like. And so when they come out there, they put on this facade or they they feel like they have to be something else. And LA is definitely the type of city where if you are yourself, you are accepted. And I think LA natives are a lot more chill than I don't know, people give us credit for.
SPEAKER_05Man's gonna call them a transplant.
SPEAKER_01And then say no offense. No offense. Like if you move to if you move to LA and you're from somewhere else, you are automatically a transplant. I'm not saying you wanted the transplants, fucking it up. But I mean, where y'all from?
SPEAKER_04We all over. I mean, we lived in Jersey, New York. Okay, uh, we live down here now. I'm from New York. You from New York? Originally. What part? Brooklyn. Oh, we live in Brooklyn. Yeah, he's born in Brooklyn. What part? Born in Brooklyn.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, what what part of Brooklyn? Oh, East Brooklyn.
SPEAKER_03East Brooklyn, East Brooklyn. East Brooklyn Saint. Okay, I was in Florida most of my life. Okay, then I'm from Cannarsey. I know what I said. Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we we Florida boys now, but uh you know, just seeing because we especially Miami, we have a lot of transplants too. Yeah, um, so I'm kind of like comparing the vibe of like because I say Miami and LA are very similar.
SPEAKER_05Really? Well, as far as like if you're comparing it to other cities, because I I also lived in Florida too, from like nine to thirteen, right before I moved to LA. And I'm that's interesting.
SPEAKER_04Take I think not I don't think the people are similar. It's more so the definitely not the weather, obviously. Okay, just kind of you know, other cities, it's cold. I think the shininess of Miami and Atlanta can be compared to that.
SPEAKER_03You get a lot of you get it, like you said, transplants down here. If you talk to locals in Miami, people born and raised in Miami, they will tell you like I'm boying. Like yeah, yeah. Brickle, Windwood, South Beach is not true, Miami. So right, right, right. So when you come down here, you move here, you're not moving to no offense. You're not moving to Higher Leah. You're not moving to Kendall, like you're moving to be here from Miami. So I get what you're saying from the transplant aspect.
SPEAKER_05But I didn't even touch like Miami till like 20 something. My grandmother used to live in Little Haiti, so I used to be there all the time. I I didn't even come to like Miami, Miami till like maybe five, six years ago. Gotcha.
SPEAKER_03So you experienced like the oh yeah, different all parts of Miami.
SPEAKER_05Oh, yeah. Oh yeah. You Haitian? Yeah, I'm a Zoe. Okay. Shout out to the Zoos, man. All the ZBs. We got another Zoe over there, too. Oh, yeah? Yeah. I noticed you might be my cousin, bro. Honestly, you might be my cousin. It might be that honestly.
SPEAKER_04Chris, I want to talk about a couple shows. Yeah. Uh the first one, The Sex Lives of College Girls. Talk about it. I'm not gonna lie, I haven't seen it yet. And I'm curious to hear from you. Yeah. Because the name alone end up in it.
SPEAKER_05It's crazy, crazy. It's so funny, too. I remember so he actually helped me with my audition for the show. Okay, and I just will never forget like seeing the title of the show on the shit and being like, yo, what what kind of shit am I signing up for right now? Right. I mean, I was like, Whoa, who's it?
SPEAKER_01Nah, he got out of this and said, I've been preparing for this my whole life.
SPEAKER_05But um yeah, it was, you know, came across like any other audition. It was really, really funny. And um, yeah, you know, we put it on tape. Uh, this was during 2020, pandemic era. It's like early 21, yeah. Yes. I'm way behind. Oh, yeah. I need to watch that. Okay, yeah, man. Tap in whenever, you know, at your leisure, at your own. Um, but um, then we did a zoom. Mindy Kaling is who created the show. She's on the office. Yeah, um, did a zoom with her and everybody from HBO, and yeah, got that call kind of right at the end of COVID. Okay. Which was which was crazy.
SPEAKER_04Now, was that with your first gig?
SPEAKER_05No. No, no, no.
SPEAKER_04Let's go down the timeline. How far back are you going?
SPEAKER_05Okay, okay, down the timeline. We we uh first the first thing I ever did was General Hospital. General Hospital. Yes. I mean, y'all trying to go down the timeline. Wait, how old are you? I was how old am I now?
SPEAKER_04How were you when you did it?
SPEAKER_05Um 13.
SPEAKER_04Oh wow.
SPEAKER_0513 or 14.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, yeah. I did like 22 episodes at General Hospital. Wow. That was like my first uh TV appearance, which was great because I did theater my whole life. And it was a really good transition from theater to television because it's it's very much like theater. So you know it's on a stage, everything's fast-paced.
SPEAKER_04What do you say the biggest differences are?
SPEAKER_05Uh between theater and television. Television. Um, I mean, you know, just the live aspect, the nerves are messing up, um, you know, the projection, everything's over the top. You have to act with your whole body rather than you know being in a tight frame or anything like that. Uh it's a it's it's a lot more like like relationship oriented too, because you know, you can you can come to set and not know who you're working with, and you guys just got scenes and then you go home. Like in theater, you are spending 12, 13, 14 hours a day, every day rehearsing, you really become like family with these people.
SPEAKER_04What about you, Patrick? Like, what did you have a theater background or kind of just hopped in?
SPEAKER_01I got stage fright, oddly enough. Yeah. Nah, my my body used to shake, my breathing would get all weird, and yeah, now it's like I just get on stage, and the second I started talking, I just sweat hella. So you still get stage fright? Last time I was on stage, like yeah, when was that? When was that? Three years ago? And it was just a stage reading. We was on stage with the with the scripts in front of us, and I started taking up some line come up. I started reading sweating. I was like, man, you just gotta push through it.
SPEAKER_05But you know what I was thinking, I was thinking about um when you hosted. No, I was actually good that night. Yeah, you was. Yeah, I was having fun. No, you were you were great. You were sweating though. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Maybe it was still happening. Yeah, yeah. I was off to the side. You remember that? I was in the game. Yes, it doesn't still happen. Yes, if I'm on the stage, if I'm elevated, yes, I will still sweat.
SPEAKER_04But um, so when you stay on stage, like like acting for an audience or like like hosting?
SPEAKER_01Um, apparently both. Because I mean, like I was on that stage, just I think it's the elevation, and I'm real susceptible to people's energy. I mean, shit. I just started talking, I started sweating right now. Um, I just I feel like when I see people or I can feel people looking at me to be entertained or for me to like give them energy back, the energy that they're giving to me in that moment to like like in in waiting, yeah, I feel that. And that's it.
SPEAKER_04Honestly, I I've always wondered because I feel that, and sometimes when I'm like, even doing this sometimes, when you're kind of like waiting for a reaction, and they're just like, like it's kind of like you just got you got eyes on me. What are you doing? And I'm like, uh, and they're like, oh, that was so good. I'm like, that's fine. Okay. I told him that yesterday.
SPEAKER_03We shoot just us two in the house, like we're chilling, whatever. Yeah, yesterday was like the first time we had like eyes on us while we're filming, like yo, y'all still watching us like it was those eyes.
SPEAKER_01Turn around. Okay, okay. No, I mean, uh, no stage background. My first project was iCarly. You want iCarly? iCarly, bro. Yeah. I gotta go back to the couple of things. The episode when her room broke down, yeah. It was I had one episode, one line. So, like, I I asked my mom to let me go to homeschool for a year to focus on acting, and she was like, if you book something in that year, you can stay out. And so I booked iCarly. It was one line, and she was like, That's not good enough. You booked it yourself? Yeah, yeah. How old were you? Uh 15.
SPEAKER_04Damn, okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, 16. 16 when I did that, and then she was like, That's not good enough. You gotta book something else. And a few months later, I booked We the Party, which uh directed by Mario Van Peoples, YG, Snoop Dogg. Okay, so it was just kind of like a build-up. Yeah, I mean, it was a it was a quick build. I mean, I went from one line to having fucking 20 seniors we the party 2010 when we shot it. I know that one hurt you. We talked about this other side because he auditioned for the main role.
SPEAKER_05Listen, listen, if you were a young black actor in 2010, you went out for a Wheat of Party. At the time, it was Where the Party at? Yeah, right, where the party at, and and at the time too, y'all remember like the jerking phenomenon? Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Okay, y'all was jerk.
SPEAKER_05So listen, though, it's cool if you was in your reject, no nothing. But um, man, and I was heavy into that as a kid, and that was kind of what the movie was like. That was what it was about, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's like it was like a this is it was a docudrama about the jerk era, yeah.
SPEAKER_05And it was like it was I was so obsessed with the role. I wanted it so, so bad. And I didn't I didn't even know you at the time. Yeah, no, and then I watched the movie uh 20.
SPEAKER_01What when we met? Yeah, 15, 16. Yeah, we've been we've been friends for a long time. It was 20 minutes. 2015. Yeah, because last year it was 10 years, yeah. Yeah, I remember that. Okay, yeah, yeah. You met on set or nah through uh the mutual friend Kofi, Ciro Bone. Kofi, yeah. Yeah, so they did a movie kicks back in the day. And then when they were doing promo for it, I was kicking it with Kofi. He brought me around. I met this nigga, dude. I met this dude, and I was like, yeah, this uh this is a great guy. So Kobe, man.
SPEAKER_05Shout out Kofi. Shout out Kobe, shout out Jay Tip too, Justin Tipping, who directed him that just came out uh last year, I think. Yeah, that's what's up. Let's do a little function.
SPEAKER_03You guys started off fun once. You guys started off fairly young though, yeah. Um, into the scene. Um at that age, was there anyone at the time like kind of inspiring you? Like, oh, I'm trying to be like him, or was it just like from a young age, that's what I'm trying to do? And then now, as you guys are getting older, is it like this is where I'm trying to go, and this is who you know I look up to in this role, or is it just like I'm blazing my own path for that?
SPEAKER_01Um, you want to take this, or I can I feel like for me it was a little bit of both. Uh at the time, uh my childhood best friend was Rashawn Fagan, who was on Shake It Up at the time. And so we was always out together. He was making music, I was directing his videos, I was just involved in the industry and being around people like Terrence and and shit like that. And so it's like, I think at a young age, I was just always around it. And at around 15, people were just asking me, like, oh, what do you want to do when you grow up? What do you want to do? And I was like, I've always loved this acting thing, and I don't have to grow up to do it. I can do it right now. And I think that was what it was was everybody kind of asking me what I want to do with my life that made me say this is it, and choose to kind of spearhead that journey. And I think now, I don't know, I mean, I'm I'm 17 years in. I obviously have people that inspire me artistically, like uh Tom Hardy, one of my favorite actors, Chris Nolan, my favorite director. Still want to work with Jonathan Majors. I know people have their feelings, but I think he's phenomenal. Great actor. Um so like there's definitely people that I have on like a on a hit list that I want to work with or want to elevate my talent to be able to be on the same pedestal to be in a project with them. But I think now, I mean, like I said, I started directing this year, so I'm in a space of just trying to create overall. What are you directing? Um, romance, actually. Uh that's that's the name of it or? No, no, no. Romance is just the type of films that I want to do. So right now, you got a lover boy in the building. Yeah, I'm shooting uh I shoot my first short actually in a couple weeks, June 10th and 11th. Okay. Um, my second short stars him. Uh so yeah, I'm just I'm really trying to just find my style as a director, the way I want to tell these romance stories. And, you know, God willing, all goes well. The next one I direct after that, submit to ABFF. We get in and we win. So then that will be your third one. That fourth. So I got three originals. Uh like there may be about three to five pages that I want to drop on socials, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube. And then that fourth one, I want to like kind of really focus more on story and and character building. And that one's the one I want to submit.
SPEAKER_04But so you're just expanding, you're doing directing and acting.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Okay. So acting is still gonna be always a part of me. I mean, that's that's what's my first love. Yeah, it's but directing, I just feel like I'm not limited by what I look like or what I sound like in order to tell a certain story. Like if there's something I want to say, but he's a better fit for the character, I can still hop behind the lens and still get that story off.
SPEAKER_05And you see, that that's 17 years in the game. Yeah, uh, people don't feel like that. People are like, no, I want to be in the camera.
SPEAKER_01Me, it's me, it's me. Yeah, yeah, that's right. Yeah, I just I try I've truly grown to a place where I I just love storytelling now. Actually, much respect. Yeah, we hope to see you at the next. We will see you at the next year. Yeah, 100% next year. The 31st ABFF. 31st. So it's the 30th.

SPEAKER_05Chris, what about you? Uh man, for me, it was it was Will Smith as a kid. Uh like I I never caught the acting bug. It was more of like I was a class clown. I would watch the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, be practicing all the stuff that he said in the mirror. I'll go to school the next day and say his jokes like they my jokes, you know what I'm saying? And and through that, like people just laughed and was like, you should do this, you should do this. Um and my parents are very religious. We went to church every Sunday, Wednesday, and in church they were like putting on a play. And uh my pastor was like, You gotta, you know, you gotta be on the play. I feel like that's how it always starts.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so I was like either the play or the choir or something like that.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. I was like, I was like nine, and uh my mom tells me this story. I don't remember it, but like apparently I got off stage after the first show, and I walked up to my mom and I was like, I I got it, like I know what I want to do. She was like, Well, I was like, I'm gonna be an actor. She was like, Okay. I was like, no, seriously. I went online, I found um, you know, brochures for like acting schools, and I brought it to her, like, and she was like, Oh, like he's serious, okay, bad. Like, let's let's do it. And um, you know, since then, my my manager, who's still my manager to this day, shout out Nick Roses, just so happened to be in one of my middle school plays. Like, he came there because a family friend of his was performing, but that's when he was starting his agency and saw me and like walked up to me after and was like, Where's your parents? I thought he was staff. And I was like, They're over there. And shout out my bro, man. And he he went up to my mom and was like, yo, your kid's gonna be on TV. And my mom once again was like, Yeah, right. Gave her the number and he did not stop calling for like two months until eventually picked up. He's been your manager since. Since. That's my brother. Since I was uh since I was 11 years old, it took him two years for us to actually do it. Um, but yeah, yeah, shout out Nick Roses, man.
SPEAKER_01So acting found you in church.
SPEAKER_05Acting found me through God. Shout out to me. Did you know?
SPEAKER_01Nah, I mean, I think I heard the story before, but I just never really put that together in my mind. Like, because the first time I found it, it was my both my parents were models, so they had agents that were trying to get me to do it, but my mom was like, I'm not gonna ever put him in it unless he wants that. I heard an audition for the Lion King musical on the radio, and I was obsessed with The Lion King as a kid. I mean, like, I I still am obsessed with Lions, love the Lion King, and my mom, I think, has been.
SPEAKER_05He can genuinely recite um Scar, like all of Scar's lines, he holding it down. No, he's like, it's actually crazy.
SPEAKER_01I still nah, it's still a dream of mine to play Scar in the Lion King. Bro, it's not too late on stage. Yeah, no, I would I'll I'll sweat that whole on I'll sweat that whole day. Sorry. I don't though. I I I that's something I want. Like my seven-year-old childhood self still dreams.
SPEAKER_05Y'all gotta see this shit. We we don't gotta do it now, but that's certainly. He has a video, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I gotta y'all gotta see it. Is that true? Yeah, we're gonna get it out of there. But that's crazy. My first audition for the Blind King was at a church.

SPEAKER_01Yeah, so I just thought that was interesting.
SPEAKER_04I feel like again, like whether it's the plays in church or like I know a lot of people who make music now, or they started off just singing in the choir. And uh, you know, as a kid, you don't expect to. Next thing you know, you just singing. Yeah. I wish I could, to be honest. Y'all make music, but yeah. Which I mean, we can get into that too.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, yeah. Speaking of music, you make music, don't you? Yes. Okay. So how did you how did you navigate kind of that growing up? Kind of the music thing and the acting thing. You said your mom knew that you knew at a young age you wanted to act. When did music kind of play a part into that?
SPEAKER_05When the music kind of Um around the same time, but it was like uh it was like a hobby. You know what I'm saying? Like we used to come to school and like have like freestyle battles. Like we used to battle each other in the cart in the courtyard um before class. And it just became like a competition thing, really. And through competition, you get you get you get better. I get reps. And uh, you know, there's a few chosen ones that like everybody knows, like, okay, like he's the nicest one, you know what I'm saying? I was blessed to be one of those ones. And I I think that I took that to my head and I just kept, you know, kept going. Notebooks, notebooks, notebooks, notebooks, and then eventually found a studio and just you know, like, what type of music are you making now?
SPEAKER_04Rap. Rap, okay. Oh, so you can spit. Yeah, spit. Boy, let's get a freestyle here.
SPEAKER_03Speaking of music, yeah. Artists that inspire you, favorite artists, who's your goat, top one, two, whatever it is. I love that from an LA guy. I really love that from an LA guy. That warms my heart for real. Both of y'all Drake.

SPEAKER_05Yeah. I mean, my early influences were were Wayne. It was Wayne. It was Wayne, everything. Like that. Wayne was a great trapper. It was Wayne, Wayne, everything. And then, you know, through Wayne, he introduced Drake to the world. And after that it was over. I was also a really big Wiz Khalifa fan because of shit. Like Wiz just like, he was everything. He was the reason why we got tattoos. Everything started. Yeah. Anyways.

You've signed your contract, you knew how much money you were gonna make.
SPEAKER_05That's the crazy part. I don't know if y'all know that. This is a good idea. You might not know about acting. Um, there's things called test deals, right? So you go to the audition, then you get a callback, then you go to a producer/slash test deal, where this is where you go, and before you even go in the room, you have negotiated numbers. You've negotiated, you sign your contract before you go in the room to audition. So therefore, after you book it, you can't like negotiate for more or whatever.
SPEAKER_04So they could throw, let's just throw a large X amount of numbers.

SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, 50,000. And then you're going into the room knowing I've signed a contract, you know this before COVID for 1.2 million dollars over the whole season. Like you go in there knowing I do this the right way, I come out with 1.2 million dollars.

And this is gonna sound like this guy's crazy, but like I I started laughing really hard because I thought to myself in my mind, I was like, what if this is how homeless people are created? Like, what if I just never made it home? Just never just stay with him. What if I just kicked him in the room?
SPEAKER_01Because of that one audition.

SPEAKER_05Right, yeah. But I was like, what if every homeless person in LA was just an actor that took the long walk home, didn't make it home. But it's like it all starts here.
SPEAKER_01Like you gotta make it home from those from those nose. You gotta pick yourself back up, you gotta walk back into that door. That's the point. And I mean, like to what you were saying earlier about like people starting out, maybe they ask outside. Anyways, um, make sure you want to do this for the right reasons because this shit will break you. Yeah, it will test you, it will test you to see, like Lofton says, it will either it will drive you crazy and see if you're crazy driven, and you have to be both. Like you have to have some a little bit of insanity to continue with this, but be in it for the right reasons. Don't think there's a shortcut. SPEAKER_01Um, I think they've changed over time, but uh, the one that's maintained consistent is I truly do feel like I have a calling on my life to entertain the world. Like, I love people. People annoy the fuck out of me sometimes. Get away from me. But like, I truly feel like I have a job to entertain people, to make them feel something through stories. Um and before, like, you know, with acting, you can truly make people feel a full gamut of emotions, sadness, happiness, joy, anything. And so it's like, I want to be able to make people smile, and then with my dramatic work, still be able to hold up a mirror to them and hopefully help them heal through some sort of trauma that they're going to, or at least start the process, the conversation, just looking at themselves and saying, like, there's a way forward. Because I think entertainment and art, film especially, can be uh very informative. I feel like you can pack a lot of information and lessons into this form of entertainment.

And it's like there's this weird thing with history and religion where it's like we don't know what's real. Whereas you get to a point in your life and you start to make what's real for you. And I think that's what is you know, religion or spirit spirituality. Um, all that to say that I think that film is a part of our history, you know. Like I think that's us making history and giving people the chance to make whatever they feel from watching and and make that into a reality. And I just think that there's a lot of people that wake up every day and don't do what they want to do. You know, people wake up and then go to nine of the someone's life, right?
