Catechism Class - Session 4 – Historical Books (Reader Zachary Armstrong)

Fr Nicholas Karipoff Season 1 Episode 4
  • What are the Historical Books in:
  • The Old Testament
  • The New Testament
  • Why are they relevant to us today?

Synopsis

Here we will explore what may be called the “historical books” of the Bible. The largest body of literature in this genre is in the Old Testament, containing books ranging from Joshua to Judges to the four Books of Kings and the small but highly important books such as Ruth and Esther. In the New Testament, the historical book is the book of the Acts of the Holy Apostles. We will briefly sketch out the history that these books describe as well as seek to understand how God works throughout history to save humanity. A big focus will be in how the historical books of the Old Testament present a literal history as well as important typological connections to the New Testament. Across all the historical literature, we will see how these books present lessons for us to learn from today as opposed to being mere historical curiosities.
