Grace and peace from God our Father and Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Thank you for tuning in to the Power to Change Ministry. And this is our podcast. My name is Reverend Alvin Lewis, and I will be your host for today. And I hope that you are experiencing God so that you may establish an intimate relationship with him. And you are experiencing God so that you can see the value of his leadership as he guides and direct you through his Holy Spirit and through and with his word. So that your focus in time will be that you will not hinder God from developing you into what He desire you to be, knowing that you are the creation of God, His belonging, His purpose, and that you want His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. In other words, you want God to take over and do whatever He chooses to do with your life. You are a God pleaser. I I hope that is what your experience is. If it is not, I pray that that will be your next decision. And hopefully, with this particular episode of this podcast, that this will be an encouraging word that will give you the all that you need to make that decision. That is what I hope that you are experiencing. Today we're going to observe to apply Philippians 4 1. And the title of this teaching is Be encouraged and wait on the Lord. That is, be encouraged and wait on the Lord. Philippians 4, verse 1. Let's start with a word of prayer. Let's hear what God has to say. Father God, in the name of the Lord Jesus, we thank you for this day that you have made. We thank you, O Lord, that we that you have given us the ability to rejoice and be glad in it. Help us to trust you and depend on you only, so that no matter what our circumstance may be at the time of the new day when we encounter it, it will not change how we respond to the creation of this day that you have made, that we will rejoice and be glad in it. And we won't allow ourselves to be distracted by whatever it is that we may be dealing with at the time. But we will stay focused on you because you knew that whatever we are dealing with in that particular day, you knew that we would be encountering it. Meaning that if you want us to rejoice and be glad in it, you have already put in place a solution so that we can think right, we can process whatever we see, and we will understand it according to your standard, and we will know how to respond to it based upon your will. So, Lord, I tell you, thank you right now in the name of Jesus for all that you have done, is doing, and everything that is to come. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged and wait on the Lord. Let me read uh Philippians 4 and 1, and then we're we're gonna give you some information about the epistle and the chapter where our scripture of observation application, this one verse, is housed in chapter 4. Hear ye the word of God. Therefore, my brethren, dearly beloved and longed for my joy and crown. So stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved. Now, this epistle to the Philippians, Apostle Paul is given the credit of being used by God when he inspired, because all scripture is inspired by God. So he uses Apostle Paul to pin this epistle. The date written is, they say is uncertain, but probably written from Rome between 60 and 64, and the purpose to express Paul's affection for the believers in Philippi, thank them for their gift, and encourage them to a lifestyle of unity, holiness, and joy. Now, to whom was it written, the church of Philippi? This church was ideal in many respects. It was a very appreciative and generous church. It was founded by Paul on his second missionary journey in the midst of the storm of persecution. The beginnings of the work were small. Among a few women at the riverside, Lydia, a seller of purple, was the first convert, and she was soon joined by the Philippian jailer and his family. These and perhaps a few others became the nucleus of the church. The main theme, Jesus Christ. Now, chapter four, let's give you a summary of that whole chapter. In this passage, the author encouraged the Philippians to stand firm in their faith and to resolve conflicts among themselves. He emphasizes the importance of rejoicing in the Lord, being moderate, and presenting their request to God through prayer. The peace of God will guard their hearts and minds. The author reflects on his contentment in all circumstances, satisfied with whatever God has given them. Meaning that the focus of their life is on eternal things rather than the temporal things that we have here in time. He expresses gratitude for the Philippian support during his afflictions and highlights their unique generosity. He assures them that God will meet all their needs and concludes with greetings from fellow believers and a blessing of grace. So we see that it is an encouraging letter, and it is addressing problems about unity. You know, so we see the same old thing, nothing new under the sun. We have the same problems today. One place that's doing one work don't like another place that's doing a different work, but we all supposed to be doing the same work in the same body. But we have to understand that the adversary can cause distractions, and we will respond to it with our flesh instead of praying and asking God to strengthen us where we are weak and help us to have sight where we are blind and to help us to walk in the light and not desire to be in the dark. This is what we see here. So when we see this particular scripture, and it starts off with, therefore, that that is an indicator that there is something prior to this particular verse, that this verse is responding and giving a response to. So when we go to Philippians chapter 3, verses 17 through 21, we will find that it says, Brethren, be followers together of me and mark them which walk, so as you have us for an example. For many walk of whom I have told you often, and now tell you, even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ, whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, and who mine earthly things. So we see that is the problem. And that again, that is a problem that still exists here in 2026. It is something where if God gives me an assignment of something that he wants me to do according to his will and his divine plan, I don't, well, I should say, I re-categorize it as being mine. It belongs to me. And instead of this is the work and the will of God, and I'm just working for him. He's just using me to get the work done. But personally, it is not my possession, it is something that I have a passion to make sure that as God uses me to do his will, that I make sure that I don't do it in a way where God is being misrepresented. So I stay in my place, making sure that God gets all of the glory. So we see that the problem here is that if you are an enemy of the cross, you're not paying attention to what God has done for all of his creation, understanding that we all are sinners, and we became sinners when Adam broke the commandment of God, and that all of us need the grace of God, and none of us is better than the other, because if that was the case, God would not have sent his only begotten son to die for for all of us that God in John 3.16, God so loved the world, he would have picked out individuals. Now, granted, we all have different works, but doesn't make my work better than somebody else's work. It just means that this is what God wants to use me for. In my toolbox, I have different tools. My screwdriver, my screwdriver is not more important than my hammer. Now, I may use my screwdriver for a particular work and I may not need a hammer. But then I may be doing something and uh fixing something and I need a hammer and not a screwdriver. So whatever I may be doing, I'm grateful that I have each tool and they are ready to serve according to the assignment or the work that needs to get done. If it's hammer work, I got that. If it's a screwdriver, I have that. So therefore, both of them are serving the purpose of repairing something or taking something down, whatever it might be, whatever I need to do. So I need them both, and they they both serve their own purpose. And and when you understand that we are the creation of God. Everything in this world is the creation of God. God owns it all. I don't own anything. He may have entrusted me with something to take care of for a little while because I'm not gonna be in time forever. But at some point, I am going to be, I am going to be out of this world, and these things that he has entrusted me with will still be here. So we have to be careful not to allow these things and our mindsets and and and and our personal possession of something that really doesn't belong to us. It's just something that God said, I need you to take. I'm gonna entrust this to you to take care of something. Um, and I want you to do it this way. Then you're doing the work of the Lord. Now to go on with uh verse 20, it says, For our conversation is in heaven, meaning our citizenship is in heaven, from whence also we look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall change our vile body that it that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body. That's for everybody that is a believer. So if I'm doing a work on the east side of town, and you're doing work on the west side of town, and then somebody doing a work on the north side of town, and then somebody doing a work on the south side of town, and maybe somebody doing a work in the middle of all of us, we're all working according to the same assignment. That's what we're doing. We're working according to the same assignment and for the same God doing what he wants us to do. And if we're doing that, we will find, yes, your work might look different than mine because God may be doing something in a specific way that he wants it done. And and that's how he wants it to look. Okay. But that doesn't mean that your work is more important than mine. Because if my work don't get done, that means that God is gonna be missing something in his will and his way. And if your work don't get done, that means there's something gonna be missing in God accomplishing his will and his way. But when we look at um Matthew 28, verses 19 through 20, it says, Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things who whatsoever I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you always, even until the end of the world. Now, we are doing what God has ordained needs to be done. See, if you're not a disciple, that means you're not following the Lord. You may be following an individual, so you may be a member of a particular church. So, so you're not, you, your relationship with God is not top priority. It is making sure that you have a relationship with those where you ever you go, the building you go in, now you have Zoom, wherever you get in, you you are spending your time with a group of people. But we have to understand that we want to be disciples because we want to go past the walls and whatever instrument is being used to learn of God or to have uh services so that we won't get lost in being polarized in this world, which is a distraction and it is a separation that is being nurtured so that now we have separated the body of Christ. And it is not separated. God's will is not separated. God's purpose, he has different purpose for everybody, but it all works together for a specific uh purpose that God has ordained. So we see here that that Paul, in this epistle, he is writing uh and encouraging the church in Philippi to wait on the Lord, as he says here in um verse 20. He says, For our conversation is in heaven, and reminded him, from whence also we look for the Savior, meaning that I am working and paying attention and excited when Jesus is coming back, the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall change our vile body, that means that we're gonna experience uh something eternally and holy, and is of the the purpose and and and the desire of our eternal Father, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body. So, excuse me. So don't don't get yourself too entrenched on the things in time that you may be you may be dealing with, the stuff that you see, the stuff that that that you have uh given a purpose to, that that purpose don't even belong to that. Again, looking at something, God has given me an assignment. When I go, when I go to work or I have a job and I and I get hired to do a particular job, the company does not belong to me. I am a worker of that company, and they need me to perform a specific assignment. That is my job title. And if I don't do that, that means that something is going to be lacking with the mission of the company. And then they're gonna come look for me. Why you didn't do that? What happened? You you you should have done that, and you've, you know, you've delayed some things. So now I'm gonna have a problem. But we have to look past these temporal things. And we have to look to the Lord. That means be encouraged. Encouragement so that you can handle the things that you need to handle in this world and understand that you are working for the Lord and you are waiting for Him. You do not want to be emotionally driven, but you want to be focused and allow the Holy Spirit to lead you into all truth. That this is what we're doing. All right. And in the last part of 21, it says, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself, knowing that sometimes God will use certain things that we may not understand. But we cannot allow ourselves to lean to our own understanding. I know in my life, sometimes God allows me to experience things to show me something about how I'm thinking, how I'm responding to things and what I'm saying and what I'm doing. And I'm looking to God, you know, in all thy ways, acknowledge him, and he's gonna direct your path. Because I want to make sure that I am fulfilling my assignment according to what God has entrusted me to. And I and I'm very careful. I don't want to bash somebody else's work. If I see somebody that looks like maybe they are not on course doing what God wants them to do, I'm gonna pray for them. I I want God to strengthen them. Because if if if if they don't win, and I think I'm winning, I've lost. Because we're all together. We're all the creation of God. I do not want my brothers and sisters to be lost so I could look better and say, yeah, look at me. No. Uh-uh. Because God could have done that. He could have left us in the condition that we were in, being dead in our sins, deceived to think that we are alive because we are looking at our physical ability. Oh, yeah, I got money, I got a house, and people like me, I'm able to do things. But but that's that's not it. If I have not uh connected back to my eternal father, I am not living life. I'm leave I'm I am experiencing a deceptive death that causes me to think that I'm alive. Now let's look at the uh some elements here of this particular verse as we have just addressed the Therefore, and we see that Paul um it says, My brethren, he is connecting with those who are, he he is writing, and through his connection with them, it is an encouragement. Because of who Paul is and the reputation that Paul has and the work that God is using Paul to do. He is saying, Therefore, my brethren, dearly beloved, and long for my joy and crown. So we see here that beloved is meaning beloved is one of Paul's favorite words for his friends, appearing twice in the verse to emphasize his deep affection. The term conveys, I love you very much and I care about you greatly. Okay, just like we see here when we looked at uh Philippians 3:18, where he says, For many walk of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping. Now, now, Paul doesn't want those who are walking the wrong way, that are functioning the wrong way. He don't want them to be lost. He would hope that they will come and see the errors of their ways and seek the God if in repentance, if that's something that they need to do. But most of all, God, help me to function the way you desire me to function. Because they are a creation of God just like me. And God, and because Paul is exemplifying and functioning and showing us that he is walking in being the image and the likeness of God, which we are created in, meaning that if he is the image of God, he is the agent of God, and in the likeness of God, he is functioning according to the character of God. So Paul is showing care and concern and and he and and he is he is being um uh I should say encouraging those who are walking right to stay where you are, and hopefully those who are out of bounds will see the errors of their ways and come to repentance and accept the correction of God so that they now can be back in the body of Christ, functioning and working according to the will of God. So we see this is what Paul is doing, and and and by helping those who are doing what they're supposed to be doing, and knowing that they are struggling and that they could get weak and maybe say, you know what, I'm uh I'm I'm tired of this. I can't do this no more. You know? I I wanna I wanna live a good life and peaceful life and have some things and do some things, and I'm tired of, I'm tired of wrestling. But when you understand the cross, this is what we see here that Paul said that they are enemies of the cross of Christ. See, that's where the power of God is in action. That's where the love of God is in action. Where Jesus the Christ is actually handling our sin problem. Jesus the Christ is is closing the gap and being the door that we need so that now we can reconnect and be uh back in the presence with our eternal Father, which is the only place that we can be and have everything that we need according to the will of God. All the way from our mindset, how our hearts are functioning, the things that we we, how we process things, the things that we say out of our mouths, and the things that we do, and how we feel about one another. Everybody is the creation of God. Everything is created by God. So when I see my brother is out of bounds, it is not time for me to celebrate. It's not time for me to find somebody else so that we can gossip about them. No, we need to pray about that situation so that that brother or that sister will not be lost. So when Jesus comes back, they will also be glorified, have a glorified body just like mine. That's what God wants. God don't want nobody to be lost. So I don't want them to be lost either. Because I want to function according to the character of God, and I want God to know that He can, He can, He can trust me and use me for whatever He wants, because I am not going to start looking at something as a possession of mine, you know, and just like this is my car or this my house, this is my money. No. This is the work and the will of God. It belongs to Him, and He has entrusted me with guidance, because He's not leaving it up to me to make the decisions. He has given me His spirit, He has given me understanding of His Word, He has given me understanding of His will in His way, and now I am going to take my assignment and do it according to the will of God because I want Him pleased and I want Him to be satisfied with me, and I don't want anything to damage the restoration that He has given me through Jesus the Christ in the relationship that I now have that I didn't have before I was able to get saved through the completed work of Jesus the Christ on the cross. And we also see here that Paul says longed for. It says, appearing only here in the New Testament signifies an intense emotion described as a homesick tenderness, expressing I desire very much to be with you. So we see it also the Greek term refers to the deep pain of separation from loved ones. So it showed that you are important to me. And I would love to be right there with you so I can hug you. And I can look in your face and tell you that everything is alright. Let's trust the Lord. Let's give God all of the glory and let him guide and direct us as he sees fit. And then the next is my joy and crown. Paul returns to the metaphor of an athletic striving, saying, His Philippian friends will be his joy and crown at the finish line. That means that Paul, through all of his training, and now in competition and straining and giving it all he got, like if he was in a race or something, and he wants to receive the first place prize. We see that the exertion that he is going through, and because Paul is expressing how he is feeling to connect with the church in Philippi, you know, even though he can't physically be there, but he wants to let them know what's in his heart so that he could connect with them. So that it can encourage them and keep them strong in the spot that he has established, you know, or God, through God, God has established them through the work that God has given Paul to do. And it says the victory's reef laid on his head when his course has been completed with joy. The crown refers to the reef awarded to a victor in Greek athletic games or placed on a guest's head at a feast, symbolizing victory, pride, happiness, and honor. The Philippian believers were proof that Paul's efforts were successful. So we see here that Paul is excited about the work of God through him on behalf of the church in Philippi. This is what we see. And he is telling them to stand firm. Stand firm in the Lord means do not succumb to compromise. So Paul is not telling them, you belong to me, you my church, you my members. No, he ain't talking about that. He is leading them to be disciples and telling them to stand firm in the Lord. And when you and in so many words, Paul is saying, I am telling you where to stand, maintain that position even when I'm gone. And now we get that message because Paul is gone. So I can't say, oh yeah, I belong to Paul's church. Paul don't have no church. Paul is a servant of the Lord, an apostle, one God has sent to do something. But it belongs to God. This is his body. So we see here that Paul is encouraging God's creation in this location and giving them guidance on the problem that exists at that spot and encouraging them to stand firm in the Lord. That's what it's all about. That's what it's all about. It is about the souls that belong to God. See, sometimes we don't we don't want to be reminded that one day we're gonna die. And God is going to can't he is going to call home what belongs to him. He is the author and the finisher of my life. He knows when I'm gonna have my last breath. He know all of the details. So everything that I might be claiming. And don't get me wrong, if God has entrusted me with something, then I am going to act responsible as a servant of God and I'm gonna take care the way he wants me to. For God. It's not mine. It belongs to God. I am teaching and preaching the word of God. It's not my word. It is God's word. So as he gives me an understanding and he tells me what he wants me to teach or preach, that I am doing it on behalf of God so that God will be better understood to whomever I'm talking to. Or it may be an encouraging word so that whatever they're going through, they know that they can trust God and they will stand firm in the Lord and that they will become more intimate with God in the relationship that they have with the Lord. And now God may want to use them for something, but because they weren't stable at the time, God sent me by to stabilize them so that God can do whatever he needs to do. I may never see them again. But God knows where they are and he takes them on the journey according to his will. So Paul says, stand firm. That means maintain your position. And because Paul established his church, maintain your position of where I have planted you, where I have placed you, according to the will of God, according to the word of God. And it's in and in the Lord. That is that's where you got to stand firm. Means living, active union with Christ, who is sustaining power as well as the goal and the goal and deliverer, all right? Because of the believer's union with Christ, he guards the inner being with his peace. That's something I can't give to an individual. If your confidence is in me, you got a problem. Because my confidence is not in me. I'm not dependent on me. I'm not looking to me. I don't I know I don't have any power other than what God gives me. I know I don't know what I'm thinking, I don't know what I'm looking at, I don't know how to process what I think I see. I don't know how what to say, when to say it. I don't know when to do something. I don't know nothing except what God give me. As He directs me and guides me. So I'm encouraging you to turn your life over to the Lord 100% and let him do what he wants to do. And you will find out that life is better because you are serving a purpose that is bigger than you. And because now my life is not my responsibility anymore. It is the responsibility of God because I have turned myself over to him, and because I'm his possession and I belong to him, it is God's job now to guide and direct me so that I will accomplish what he wants me to accomplish. Just like my screwdriver and my hammer in my toolbox. My screwdriver, don't he ain't gonna just get up and go do something. My hammer, not just gonna jump out the out my toolbox and go and start, you know, working on something. No. When I pick up the screwdriver, I take it where I need it to go and I do what I need to do with it, and it's ready to do it. But I'm doing the doing because it's my screwdriver and and I and it needs me. It's just waiting ready for me, sitting in the toolbox. It may be months where I don't use my screwdriver, but my screwdriver is ready as a screwdriver to be used by me when I need to use it. And that's the same thing with us. I am available to God whenever he chooses to do whatever he wants to do with me, wherever it is that he wants to do it. And he molds and shapes me so that I am the instrument that he can use for things and places and circumstances that he wants to use me. He customizes me just like he will customize you and everybody else to be what he wants them to be and desire them to be according to his will. So now I am focusing on being exactly what God wants me to be. And that means that I don't have time for no foolishness and nothing else that's not of God. You know, when I see a problem, instead of me getting into it, like I said, getting into a group and we're gonna gossip about it. No, I'm gonna pray about it. Because today that person is having a storm and run and going through something. But tomorrow, I might have my own storm. I might be going through something. I might, and see, those storms, when I look at a storm, God is sending a storm to strengthen me. Because I'm looking to God. I ain't looking at the adversary. He's trying to do something. I don't know what he's doing, you know, other than he comes to steal, kill, and destroy. But I'm gonna keep my mind on the Lord. Because God is more, He's stronger than anything that we're gonna endure in this world. Everything belongs to him. He allows things, certain things that things to happen according to his will. I may not understand it, and he don't have to explain everything to me because I trust him. So, whatever he wanna do, just show me what I need to be doing right now, Lord. I I don't know why this is here, but I oh, you know what? It's here. So you knew it was gonna be here. So I'm looking to you for guidance. Show me how to do this. What should I be thinking? How should I be responding to it? What am I really looking at? Because I I see one thing, but what is that? I need God to give me an understanding so that I can make sure that I am uh functioning according to the will of God. So be encouraged and wait on the Lord. That's that's what it's all about. There's nothing in this world that has the power, the strength, the wisdom, or the knowledge that I need to make it through time and get to eternity so that I can hear God say, Well done, good and faithful servant. There's nothing in this world. Anything in this world, it can be a distraction, it can cause your mind to be focused on something that it shouldn't be focused on, and and and you want, you want to at all times be pleasing to God because you don't know when you're gonna stop breathing. I know we don't want to think about that, but you better think about it because it's real. Now, as I come to my conclusion and my benediction. Now, listen here, 2 Corinthians 10, chapter 10, verses 3 through 5, it says, For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh. For the weapons of our welfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to pulling down of strongholds, casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalted itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. So we see that, and and and and that. Up when we look at uh Philippians 3 21, at the end it says, according to the working whereby he is able to even subdue all things unto himself. So if I'm dependent on God and I and I'm going to use the principles of God and the way of God and the will of God and the desire of God and the guidance of God, and you know, I have to I have to seek and be looking to the Lord. That means that I need to have a relationship with Him. And I need to I need to make sure that I that I'm working on strengthening that. And that I'm in the Word of God. And I I desire, God give me the desire of my heart, meaning that I want you to give me what you want me to have. Not what I want, but I want you to give me what you want me to have in my heart. So that I can be functioning according to the will of God. Now I'm able to walk by faith and not by sight. And I'm also able to understand that I'm not just living to be blessed, but I'm living to be a blessing. That God is using me according to his will and his way. And I am excited about the assignment that God has given me. Nobody has a big assignment and I got a little assignment. No, I have what I have and you have what you have. We won't let jealousy get in and and be a cancer in the body of Christ. In God's church. In the work of the Lord. We can't do that. Because I want to have a possession because I want people to look at me and say, oh wow, look what he got. I don't have nothing. I'm a worker. I'm a servant. I'm going to stay humble. And God lift me up when he wants to, if he wants to. But I'm lifted up right now, just serving God the way I am. I'm fine. You know, because I'm serving God, I'm lifted up. I'm so grateful that I have something that God wants to use me for. I'm excited about that. And it don't matter what it is. I'm fine because I'm being used by God, my eternal Father, the Most High God, Yahweh. I'm I'm I'm man, that that that just gives me joy. I'm, you know what I mean? Ain't nothing greater than that to me. And I'm and I'm grateful that God has given me that understanding and that desire in my heart. So I'm great. That's all right. So I'm encouraging you today, be encouraged and wait on the Lord. That is what I am encouraging you to do today, to wait on the Lord. To let God define your moment and give you the guidance and direction that He has for your life according to His purpose that He has ordained for your existence. And now you are living a prosperous, victorious, a joyful and exciting life. One that you never ever thought that could exist in the midst of the storm that you might be in. Because the storm don't have to stop. It don't have to be sunny skies and blue skies and you know, birds chirping. It don't have to be that. Whatever condition, God has that power. So I say thank you, Lord. So thank you for tuning in to the Power to Change Ministry. And my name is Reverend Alvin Lewis. And also here at Power to Change Ministry, uh, we have an understanding that obedience to the word of God is the power to change because we need to change. Change. I you don't want to stay the same. I don't need God to polish up that old mess I had. He gave me something new, something of an eternal nature. Something that he has said, this is who you are. I want to be that. And I and I and I want to be strengthened so I can be the best that, that God, uh you know, so that God will be pleased with me. And that I can be a help in the body of Christ to encourage those who may be struggling for one reason or another. But I want to be that voice of hope, just like Paul is being here. And I want to be that one who brings out the bright spots because sometimes the world wants to cover them up and only want you to look at that little speck of what might be designated as being something wrong and amplify it so it covers up everything. No, we we want to deal with the truth, and that is according to the word of God. So again, God willing, we will be here again next week with another word from the Lord, and you are welcome.
