An Americanist

Twitter Files, Wisconsin Politics, and Celebrity Date Night Musings

TALK TO ME, TEXT IT

Censorship, political maneuvering, and surprising revelations dominated yesterday's news cycle – but how much did you actually hear about? In this eye-opening episode of An Americanist, we pull back the curtain on a critical censorship hearing that received minimal mainstream coverage.

Matt Taibbi's Capitol Hill testimony revealed how the State Department's Global Engagement Center, originally created to combat foreign disinformation, pivoted under the Biden administration to monitoring everyday American social media users with no foreign connections. This confrontation between Taibbi and former "Disinformation Czar" Nina Jankowicz exposes troubling questions about government overreach and free speech limitations that deserve your immediate attention.

We also explore Wisconsin's seemingly contradictory electoral outcomes, where voters overwhelmingly supported voter ID requirements while simultaneously electing a liberal judge. The explanation? Redistricting's powerful impact on our democratic process. Plus, bombshell revelations from a new book claiming former President Obama worked behind the scenes against Kamala Harris' potential 2024 candidacy, the Trump administration's unexplained suspension of university grants, and newly released JFK files suggesting CIA officials lied about their awareness of Lee Harvey Oswald.

The episode wraps with a lighter audience question about your dream celebrity date, proving that even in times of serious political discourse, we can still find moments of connection and levity. Speaker 1:

Well, good morning, happy Wednesday and welcome to the newly rebranded podcast called An Americanist. This is your daily Americanist. I have a blog called anamericanistcom where I will try to write daily, but you will definitely get some quick takes here on the podcast, monday through Friday daily, and today we have up on the X-File. Did you know that there was a censorship hearing yesterday? That happened? From the Twitter files, journalist Matt Tahibi spars with Biden's disinfo czar. You remember her in censorship hearing. We don't need a truth squad. This is from the New York Post. And let's see Washington. Let's see Twitter files.

Speaker 1:

Journalist Matt Taliby sparred with former President Joe Biden's one time disinformation czar, nina Jankowicz. You remember her. I think she's the one that got on there and sang some kind of Snow White song, I don't know. No, it was the one. Oh my gosh, I see the movie. It's the super calefragilistic that one, let's see. She sparred with Nina during a Tuesday hearing about a government censorship on Capitol Hill, ripping the past administration's content moderation efforts for having undermined Americans' free speech. Did you know that this was happening yesterday? I did not. Well, there you go. Heard testimony from both about the State Department's Global Engagement Center, gec, which was set up under former President Barack Obama to counter foreign disinformation and misinformation, but had begun targeting US social media users under Biden. Gec officials were largely concerned with domestic English language accounts, people with no ties to terror groups or relationships with adversary nations like Iran, china or Russia. Taibbi said about his extensive review of the internal Twitter NowX records in 2023.

Speaker 1:

Y'all need to go read this. It's out on my X account. Wow. And now I'm just going to read some headlines for you, and then we're going to get to the question of the day, provided by a longtime listener and share of my content, mr Shons. But first, again, we're going to read some headlines. First from the New York Post, out of the politics section. Stand by. Oh, and, by the way, rip Val Kilmer I personally, I'm sorry. I thought he was already passed away. I thought we had already lost him a while ago, apparently not. So yeah, rest in peace, val. Thank you, iceman.

Speaker 1:

All right, so here are some headlines, so Wisconsin. So here are some headlines. So Wisconsin. You know, elon Musk was out in Wisconsin making a big push to try to. He tried his best to get the Republican conservative judges voted in. It did not work. They still voted in that liberal judge Susan Crawford. However, and that's all because of redistricting. Y'all need to pay attention to that. When they redistrict somewhere, you know what's about to go down. Need to pay attention to that. When they redistrict somewhere, you know what's about to go down. Meanwhile, wisconsin adds voter id requirement to state constitution, with ballot measure getting overwhelming support. So overwhelming support for the voter id, but yet they vote in a liberal judge, and that's all because of the redistricting. Okay, what other headlines do we have here?

Speaker 1:

White House suggests National Security Advisor Mike Waltz received work-related emails on his personal Gmail account. Oh, this one's interesting. Obama was working against Kamala Harris behind the 2024 scenes. Didn't think she could win Really. And that's a new book. Uh, there's a new book out by these two liberal pundits slash journalists and let's see if I can what the oh, the book is called fight inside the wildest battle for the white house by jonathan allen he had help with. He's the co-author. Uh, anyway, if you want to read about that, you can read about that. It's on the politics section of the new york post.

Speaker 1:

Let's see, trump administration suspends several dozen federal grants for princeton and universities. President claims he doesn't know why. Really, you, you don't? Huh? Well, maybe you should find out. Convicted felon Hunter Biden to be permanently stripped of DC license to practice law? Was he even practicing it? I think he was just sponging off the American people as the president's son. Okay, florida Gop Trump-backed candidate Keep House seats in special elections. Good, good. Melania trump you haven't heard much from her lately, but she actually honors eight extraordinary women, including israeli, held in brutal captivity by hamas. That's good. Uh, jfk files reveal cia officials lied about the awareness of assassin lee harvey oswards researcher. Really, you don't say all right, that's enough of that, let's get on to the. I really need you to go look at the twitter files, though I may have to write about that on the americanist blog today.

Speaker 1:

All right, so the question of the day from Mr Shons you ready, all right. If you were still available, like as in to date people, what celebrity would you like to go on a date with and what would you talk about? Well, I think that was the question. Stand by and let me make sure I want to get this right. So, yes, what living celebrity would you like to accompany on a date and why? Why? Oh gosh, I don't know. I haven't really thought about this.

Speaker 1:

Somebody put out on X the other day. You know, tweet out your celebrity crush and I put Sam Rockwell. Now I know nothing about Sam Rockwell, I think I just like the characters that he plays. So I don't really have a celebrity crush or somebody that I'd like to go out on a date with. I'm going to have to think about this now. If you want to put it in political terms, what politician would you like to go out on a date with, and why? And what would you talk about? Oh boy, that would be interesting to hear the answer to that, and Mr Sean makes a good point. He says that his answer would probably be different today than it would be 20 years ago, and I have to agree Absolutely, absolutely agree with that, for myself as well. All right, so if you could, if you could, if you're listening and retweeting, would you mind retweeting from my An Americanist account on X? That would be great. I'm really trying to grow that over there.

Speaker 1:

Still keeping Carol Remarks. I love my Carol Remarks X file too. All right, I've got to go. I need to keep this. I'm going to try my best to start keeping these under 10 minutes. So far, so good in the new rebrand, and I know I need to make a new intro, so I'll be doing that as well. Very short intro, all right, I gotta go. Thanks for listening. Go read the blog, go comment on the blog. That would be great too. I'm trying to get participation and I am looking for guest bloggers on a regular. Okay, gotta go love y'all. Thanks for listening. Bye.
