Abandoned homes and lots, and more specifically a convoluted and challenging process to clear title, present a major obstacle in efforts to improve home ownership in urban communities. Nowhere is this more pronounced than Memphis, where only 43% of African Americans own homes, compared with 62% of Whites. Convergence Memphis is an initiative led by the Mortgage Bankers Association and the Tennessee Housing Development Agency, bringing together industry and community leaders to address the issue.
