Unglamorous Setting Of The Mind S12e34 Rm8:6

Michael Smith Season 12 Episode 34

The Christian walk is in many ways not very glamorous.  Much of it is lived between the ears of one's head, deciding for God, and deciding what to do next.  Scripture calls that SETTING the MIND.

Every Christian you know is doing this very regularly.  It should be an invisible, regular, repeated, faculty of thoughtful planning, outlook and way of thinking.  Because of its regularity, it is not very glamorous, in my opinion.  What it is though, is absolutely critical.  We so very need to set and reset, and then reset and then reset our wandering minds.  Pray for all the Christians you know, as they will be faced with this challenging task about 10 times today. I guess unglamorous + unglamorous + unglamorous resetting eventually = glory.

Good morning, my brothers and sisters, welcome to episode 34 In the book of Romans, thanks for being with me in this podcast. Today I'm going to title this the unglamorous setting of the mind. We've been celebrating sort of this amazing moment in the book of Romans, where God has a new position for us that is, we have the ability to be found in Him. And Jesus. It has this like forcefield of protection around him and all believers can run into an on our first day, and if you're new to the podcast may run into that forcefield of righteousness and strength and Christ's accomplishment, and it gets accounted to you remember God's bad at that's counting math, and he counts all those good things of himself. He comes to them for you, and all the bad things about you. He doesn't doesn't count. So it's just this amazing exchange. He starts by saying, wretched man that I am, I can't do this on my own, Who will deliver me from this body of death? Of course, the answer is Jesus. And eight one, no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. So my question today is, so now what what's the what? What should I be doing now, now that I'm found in him, what should I be doing? Read with me from Romans chapter eight. I'm going to start in verse five. For those who live according to the flesh, set their minds, that's the big Greek word for the day, set their minds for Neo on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, set their minds on the things of the Spirit, for to set the mind on the flesh is death. But to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace, for the mind that is set on flesh is hostile to God for does not submit to God's law. Indeed, it cannot, for those who are in the flesh cannot, please God. So you'll notice, as we read today, the term set their minds is a big one. And it's kind of categorized in a bad way is setting in the mind on the things of the flesh, or it can be setting the minds on the things of the Spirit. So that's what that's what it is to live according to the Spirit, it's this daily setting of the mind on the things of the Spirit. It's not a one and done. And I'm going to ask today is, what should I do now that Christ has done all this to me? And the answer we get from Scripture? My first answer was this definition of Fernando, which is the faculty of thoughtful planning outlook. And it's a way of thinking, but as I was thinking of it more and more, I, the word that kept coming to mind was, this is very unglamorous. It's the unglamorous repeated, constant faculty of thoughtful planning, of Outlook, a way of thinking of the siding the way that we're thinking. So it's the setting and resetting of the mind that should characterize the life of every single person who is in Jesus setting the mind on the things of the Spirit. So think about, you know, just all the Christians out there who's the wisest Christian that you know, well, they'll be setting and resetting their minds on the things of the Spirit. Okay, who's the sickest Christian, you know, today, they'll be setting their minds and resetting their minds on the things that spirit you could pray for them for that. Who's the newest Christian that you know, they'll be setting their mind and resetting their mind, on the things of the Spirit. Maybe there's a person you admire something about their spiritual walk, maybe their fellowship, or maybe their, their service or their or their prayer, they will be constantly setting their mind in an unglamorous way, probably, and resetting their minds of the things in spirit. This is something that should characterize all Christians. It's the setting of the mind on the things of the Spirit. It's something that every believer does, and does every day and probably every hour, think about this. You wake up, boom, you set your minds on the things of the Spirit, you get up, you start your morning habits, maybe you do this podcast, you you eat meals, you pray before meals, maybe you have difficult moments at work, or maybe an upcoming difficult moment at work something you know that it's going to be challenging, and you set your mind before you go in to do that. Or maybe you're halfway into it in the midst of us and you do this pop up prayer of setting your mind or maybe it's a moment when you need wisdom or when you're out of gas. You set your mind or reset your mind or a moment of temptation, where you set your mind and you pop this prayer up to the Lord and reset your mind. Or maybe it's when you sit down and make entertainment choices, you set your mind on the things of the Spirit. If this was all you knew to do, after you become a Christian, you'd be in pretty good shape. Because the unset mind, the alternative kind of wanders around and blows around, it's bent towards evil, and the likely it's going to, it's going to settle there. So this is the resetting of the mind that gets us back on track. It's the rebooting. And the the part that struck me today was kind of the tirelessness of it. It's the continual battle of the mind, of planning. And I came up with the word unglamorous in repeated and constant Philippians, chapter four, verse eight, talks about some of this. He says, Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable. If there's any excellence, if there's anything worthy of praise, think about these things. In other words, set your mind on on of these things. And today is, you know, we're into 1000 days of this podcast, and every day, and I was thinking of life in chunks of 1000 days, and likely, every day of your chunk of 1000 days. And if God grants you 1000 more days, you're going to be setting your mind and resetting your mind doing this, this Greek word activity. For NATO, you're going to be doing this, you know, 10,000 times or whatever. It's something that you should be engaged in of the setting and resetting of your mind. So as you go today, to this, what I'm calling unglamorous mindset and may the Lord be with you. And may you constantly or at least repeatedly, and unglamorous Lee, keep on setting your mind made characterize your life. Today. I bless you in this endeavor. Thank you for listening.
