Be With Me: 7 Minutes of Biblical Wonder
Be With Me is a daily 7 minute chronological walk through the New Testament hosted by Michael Smith. It is for everyone who is curious about what Jesus actually said and did in the gospels. Most episodes will leave you with at least one good thought to chew on for the rest of the day. We start with the Bible and hopefully end with Awe. We are walking through the chronological events of Jesus' life and then thoughtfully considering them. It is meant to spur the devotional life of the Christian and the not-yet-Christian. We occasionally venture into the Old Testament when it helps our understanding of the New Testament events. Everybody has 7 minutes. Everybody needs to wonder. Be With Me is hosted by Michael Smith who has absolutely no special qualifications to do a podcast. He is not a pastor. He has not been to seminary. He does not lead a mega-church. He is not a professional and he has no more credentials than you do. He does, however, follow a great God with an observant eye and a curious heart. Each day, he starts with a study bible and aims for astonishment. ‘be with him’ for 7 minutes as he sets out daily to discover the God who invites us to ‘Be With Me.’
Be With Me: 7 Minutes of Biblical Wonder
I am forsaken vs. It is finished s28e153 Ps 22
Jesus gives a not-so coded message on the cross: Go read Psalm 22! Because of the air-hunger of crucifixion, He quotes the first and the last line. It is a psalm of difficulty, specifically referencing crucifixion, that ends in triumph.
It is not a psalm of abandonment. He has NOT despised. He has NOT abhorred. He has NOT hidden his face. He HAS heard. It is a testimony of intimacy between the Sufferer and the Father.
Join me in the psalm that Jesus preached from the cross, Psalm 22.

I am forsaken vs. It is finished s28e153 Ps 22
We are back to the foot of the cross, just like yesterday.
There we find 4 women, 1 John and of course Jesus.
They are near enough to hear Jesus in His weakened state.
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me. Mt 27, Mk 15.
It is not so much a statement, it is a REFERENCE
If this is the only line of ps 22 you read, you may think God forsakes Jesus on the cross. I humbly submit, this is an error.
Jesus makes the reference because He is in air-hunger and is being asphyxiated and cannot speak all of Psalm 22. He would if He could.
It’s like saying, “four score and seven years ago…” our fathers brought forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
This is not an abandonment, a forsaking. He is referring us to the TRIUMPH of Ps22. You cannot read the “why have you forsaken me” psalm and conclude that God forsakes, abandons, or is separate
He is referring us to ALL of PS 22, which is THE prophetic psalm about His crucifixion. Yes it says, why have you forsaken me, but that is not all that it says…
1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest.
3 Yet you are holy, Decsion. Turning Remembering
enthroned on the praises of Israel.
4 In you our fathers trusted;
they trusted, and you delivered them.
5 To you they cried and were rescued;
in you they trusted and were not put to shame. …Like many psalms, this starts with feelings and circumstances
6 But I am a worm and not a man,
scorned by mankind and despised by the people.
7 All who see me mock me;
they make mouths at me; they wag their heads;
8 “He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him;
let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”
9 Yet you are he who took me from the womb;
you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts.
10 On you was I cast from my birth,
and from my mother’s womb you have been my God.
11 Be not far from me,
for trouble is near,
and there is none to help.
12 Many bulls encompass me;
strong bulls of Bashan surround me;
13 they open wide their mouths at me,
like a ravening and roaring lion. HThis is exactly what the mockers did
14 I am poured out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint;
my heart is like wax; We see a most horrible description of crucifixion
it is melted within my breast;
15 my strength is dried up like a potsherd,
and my tongue sticks to my jaws;
you lay me in the dust of death.
16 For dogs encompass me;
a company of evildoers encircles me;
they have pierced my hands and feet—
17 I can count all my bones—
they stare and gloat over me;
18 they divide my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots. …Prophecy of ps22 already fulfilled.
19 But you, O Lord, do not be far off! Prayer of intimacy
O you my help, come quickly to my aid!
20 Deliver my soul from the sword,
my precious life from the power of the dog!
21 Save me from the mouth of the lion!
You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen!
22 I will tell of your name to my brothers; oDecision making, entrusting in Fr.
in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
23 You who fear the Lord, praise him!
All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him,
and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
24 For he has not despised or abhorred
the affliction of the afflicted,
and he has not hidden his face from him,
but has heard, when he cried to him. oPs 22 is not a ps about abandonment.He says He has NOT despised. NOT abhorred the affliction of the afflicted. NOT hidden his face HAS heard
25 From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
my vows I will perform before those who fear him.
26 The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied;
those who seek him shall praise the Lord!
May your hearts live forever!
27 All the ends of the earth shall remember
and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
shall worship before you.
28 For kingship belongs to the Lord,
and he rules over the nations. oVictory, triumph, majesty, accomplishmen
Like some many psalms, they start with feelings, problems and end in glory and praise.
29 All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;
before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
even the one who could not keep himself alive.
30 Posterity shall serve him;
it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;
31 they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn,
that he has done it. oIT IS FINISHED. Single word in Greek:
Finished. Accomplished.
You did it Father. The rescue is complete.
Seen all the way to the end.
Promises fulfilled.
Quotes the beginning AND the end. He uses 2 of his sentances to bookend PS 22 and refer us to all the inbetween words.
He has NOT despised. NOT abhorred. Fr.s face was NOT hidden HAS heard
He tells us to read Ps 22, I suggest we do it!
