Be With Me: 7 Minutes of Biblical Wonder
Be With Me is a daily 7 minute chronological walk through the New Testament hosted by Michael Smith. It is for everyone who is curious about what Jesus actually said and did in the gospels. Most episodes will leave you with at least one good thought to chew on for the rest of the day. We start with the Bible and hopefully end with Awe. We are walking through the chronological events of Jesus' life and then thoughtfully considering them. It is meant to spur the devotional life of the Christian and the not-yet-Christian. We occasionally venture into the Old Testament when it helps our understanding of the New Testament events. Everybody has 7 minutes. Everybody needs to wonder. Be With Me is hosted by Michael Smith who has absolutely no special qualifications to do a podcast. He is not a pastor. He has not been to seminary. He does not lead a mega-church. He is not a professional and he has no more credentials than you do. He does, however, follow a great God with an observant eye and a curious heart. Each day, he starts with a study bible and aims for astonishment. ‘be with him’ for 7 minutes as he sets out daily to discover the God who invites us to ‘Be With Me.’
Be With Me: 7 Minutes of Biblical Wonder
I cringe a little when I look at myself S28e179 Jn21:15
Peter is GRIEVED that Jesus has to ask him the same question 3 times in a row. I don't think he's mad at Jesus. I think Peter is grieved at himself; that the 3x question was needed for his own benefit.
In the church, the best LEADERS are the best LOVERS of God. So, Peter had to get this right with the Lord. In Peter's case, it is the BROKEN who make the best witnesses for the Lord.

I cringe a little when I look at myself S28e179 Jn21:15
Yesterday we looked to ASA for a lesson on LOVING TO BE TENDED, specifically his enthusiasm to have his eye boogers attended to.
Unfortunately, we are sheep-like much of the time and we just plain need the assistance of our leaders, teachers, elders, sisters and brothers. Leads to our story
Principle of scripture, and I have not yet found an exception to this rule:
When Jesus asks a question, there is somebody in the room(in this case a shore breakfast) who doesn’t know the answer. And…the person who doesn’t know the answer IS NEVER JESUS. Today it will be PETER.
Jesus asks a question, 3x, for a reason.
John 21:15 Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.”Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.
The CALL, confirmation, the coming, the charge and the CRINGE of Peter
THE CALL of PETER
So that he is identified amongst the disciples as a lover of God
In the church, the best LEADERS are the best LOVERS of God
So that he is seen by God uniquely, and by name and in a sense, by sin
This is a very specific conversation to a very specific person
This is a very specific topic because of a very specific betrayal
Literally SEEN by Jesus. Despite this, because of this…
I am calling you Peter to serve my church, my people for life
THE CONFIRMATION of PETER
So that his soul is encouraged by the self knowledge, that, dispite his failures, after days of solo reflection, that YES Jesus, I DO LOVE YOU
WHO needed this conversation? Who needed this affirmation?
You KNOW that I love you, for you know all things.
This is something that there was some evidence against
He did after all, betray Jesus 3 times, denied. Cursed
YOU KNOW ALL THINGS: you know all about my betrayal. Yes,
But more: You are God and you know all.this means You are God
And, though I have stumbled, I am back in the fight.not done failing!
THE COMING back OF PETER
REMEMBER: the separation of Peter, as he ran away from the mob, the servant young girl, AND JESUS himself as the rooster crowed, could have been the last moment we heard about in the life of Peter. That could have been his last encounter with Jesus—like Judas’was
However PETER CAME BACK. Peter came BACK
He was there when Mary Mag came back from tom
He was there when Jesus appeared in Jerusalem
He was nearby at least in Galilee, supposed to be on “the Mtn”
Perhaps the Lord went to their galilee mtn meet spot: “gone fishing”
CHARGE to Peter
I have a flock. MY flock. My ownership. Mine. I am their Owner, savior
They are “lambs”. They are in the Sheep family. They are Baby sheep.
I am making you my steward. Someone who is my agent and keepertemp.
Let’s get this leadership thing straight. My sheep. My call. My provision.
Your obedience. Faithfulness. Feeding, tending. Serving.
Without this choosing, call you as a leader will not make it to the end.
These sheep need feeding. They say that lambs are not the best at this skill
Lambs don’t free-range well.
Lambs benefit from the idea of leading to pasture; feeding in this way
THE CRINGE of Peter:
is grieved that the Lord repeatedly asks Do you love me.
Grieved = Saddened, distressed, sorrowful BUT AT WHO?
At Jesus, resurrected triumphant, receiving the #1 knucklehead in the NT?
Accomplished and alive Jesus?
I think Peter is grieved with HIMSELF. That the perfect Jesus has to come specifically for this conversation to build me back up.
I am such a weenie that I got myself into this trouble; I am that #1 knuckle.
Really Jesus?, we have to affirm the truth 3 times? Oh right…
Because I betrayed you 3 times and ran away
Similarly, our sin, separation should make us cringe too.
Are you grieved at your sin too? That you need to receive an undeserved, personal healing restoration from Lord Himself?
Stay tuned, this grieving-over-self Peter is going to make the best witness.
The broken make the best witnesses for Jesus. You can be one too. Be grieved.
Come back tomorrow to see what The Lord has for the rest of Peter’s life
