Be With Me: 7 Minutes of Biblical Wonder
Be With Me is a daily 7 minute chronological walk through the New Testament hosted by Michael Smith. It is for everyone who is curious about what Jesus actually said and did in the gospels. Most episodes will leave you with at least one good thought to chew on for the rest of the day. We start with the Bible and hopefully end with Awe. We are walking through the chronological events of Jesus' life and then thoughtfully considering them. It is meant to spur the devotional life of the Christian and the not-yet-Christian. We occasionally venture into the Old Testament when it helps our understanding of the New Testament events. Everybody has 7 minutes. Everybody needs to wonder. Be With Me is hosted by Michael Smith who has absolutely no special qualifications to do a podcast. He is not a pastor. He has not been to seminary. He does not lead a mega-church. He is not a professional and he has no more credentials than you do. He does, however, follow a great God with an observant eye and a curious heart. Each day, he starts with a study bible and aims for astonishment. ‘be with him’ for 7 minutes as he sets out daily to discover the God who invites us to ‘Be With Me.’
Be With Me: 7 Minutes of Biblical Wonder
Responding to the 5 commandments s29e16 Dt5:17
Watch 7 minutes with me as humans respond to 5 of the 10 commandments of God. If we finish today with ½ as good of a response, I think God will be pleased.
See what placing before them murder, adultery, stealing, lying, and coveting does to them. It doesn't harden their hearts. It MELTS their hearts...Just like it should ours.
Subscribe to melt more tomorrow.

Responding to the 5 commandments s29e16 Dt5:17
Again, we are “only” doing 5 commandments today. WHEW!
I’d be completely obedient and successful if I didn’t have to deal with all 10 of the commandments…then I’d get em right.
We made the argument yesterday that maybe if you only had 5 of the 10 commandments to do, would you have right standing before God?
All of us stand before ALL 10 of the commandments. For today again
how about if I gave you some options: you get to PICK which 5 commandments you are interested in following? Then you’d have success?
17 “ ‘You shall not murder.
18 “ ‘And you shall not commit adultery.
19 “ ‘And you shall not steal.
20 “ ‘And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
21 “ ‘And you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. And you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, or his male servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.’
Murder. Sins of. Violence. Adultery: taking from someone else’s spouse that which is only for that spouse.
Giving to another, a part of your zipper that is pledged to be given only to your spouse. God has something to say about sexual purity
Stealing: work, ownership, property rights boundaries
False Witness: lying, in particular when stakes are high. Always high. 2 yo.
Coveting Wife, as opposed to just adultery. Qualities, besides her zipper, that are desired to the extent that God is displaced. To say nothing of house, land, employees, car or anything else you’d spy as you look over the fence.
As Jesus described these opens up a whole can of worms
Dialing up the 5 commandments. Turbo-ing the 5 commandments
He didn’t come to ABOLISH the law, but to fulfill them
Not a dot will pass from the law
He didn’t come to RELAX the law but to tighten it; make it more difficult
MurderMt 5:21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council;
Wait, now I don’t have to go at someone with a knife, but only my word
Violence of hand, violence of heart. Violence of word.
Oh, WHATEVER. NO. sooo grievous, liable to the hell of fire.
And then Adultery: 27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart
Wait, now I don’t have to go at someone with my zipper, but only my eye?
We live in the land of MORE than the 10 commands.
Here is my favorite part of these now 10 commandments
22 “These words the Lord spoke to all your assembly at the mountain out of the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice; and he added no more. And he wrote them on two tablets of stoneand gave them to me. 23 And as soon as you heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes, and your elders. 24 And you said, ‘Behold, the Lord our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. This day we have seen God speak with man, and man still live. 25 Now therefore why should we die? For this great fire will consume us. If we hear the voice of the Lord our God any more, we shall die.26 For who is there of all flesh, that has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of fire as we have, and has still lived? 27 Go near and hear all that the Lord our God will say, and speak to us all that the Lord our God will speak to you, and we will hear and do it.’
.When you heard the voice, you came near
You recognized the presence and the voice and the protection
The Lord has shown us His GLORY, and Greatness
We have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire
We hear God in the evidence of His instructions
We are not consumed! We are let in on His truths and secrets
The revelation has not killed us, as it should. We are still here!
We have and we will come near and hear all that the Lord has.
We will hear it and do it!
Oh, could that be our FIRST response:
Lord you are near. You are hear. We see you. We are in awe before you. You should be melting us right now, but only our hearts are melted before you.
We wish to draw near to You , as You have to us.
Speak all that you have for us
We will hear and do it, this hour
We will hear and to it this day
May our response to murder, adultery, stealing, lying, coveting be ½ as good as our Israelite brothers and sisters.
