Take care lest you forget the most important S29e19 Dt6:10

Today we’ll learn that.It is easier to find God in the tempest than in tranquility. That there is a special caution for Abundance, when times are good! Take care lest you forget the Lord.

 Deut 6

10 “And when the Lord your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you—with great and good cities that you did not build, 11 and houses full of all good things that you did not fill, and cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant—and when you eat and are full, 12 then take care lest you forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 13 It is the Lord your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear. 14 You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are around you— 15 for the Lord your God in your midst is a jealous God—lest the anger of the Lord your God be kindled against you, and he destroy you from off the face of the earth.

What does the Lord have for people who closely follow Him?

He has a wonderful “land”: physical and metaphorical

Good and great cities you did not build

Houses full of good things you did not fill

Cisterns you did not dig—generally chipped out of STONE

Vineyards and olive trees you did not plant

When should you take care lest the Lord be forgotten?

When you eat and are full.

When do you Think about the Lord/cry: when you are in the house of slavery Numbers 20:16

16 And when we cried to the Lord, he heard our voice and sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt.

:Who is it that CRIES to the Lord:  Alienated, Lost, homeless, thirsty

If you are enslaved by something: food, drink, porn, power, and you are crying out to God, you are a friend of mine and soon to be a friend of His

This is why the Lord says it is better to go to the house of Mourning rather than a house of feasting because those in the house of mourning are more apt to LAY IT TO HEART (ecc 7:2)

When do you FORGET about God: brought out. Filled up. Given much. Roof over your head. Trees working for you in the back yard. Some wine in the cellar. Not a slaveanymore.

This person needs to take special care. When you have goodness you don’t deserve.  We have a NT word for it: GRACE Full of grace, but not grateful.

Full of trees, but not Thankful

Got a house, but not happiness

Got stuff, but no satisfaction in the Lord

Found yourself NOT one of Those who  lay it to heart

“Take care lest you forget” says our passage in Dt6

They forgot to TAKE CARE and now are forgetting

Caution: two sides of this

If trouble has found you this day, Or worse, if you have found trouble all on your own, remember, this is an opportunity. How so?

It is easier to find God in the tempest than in tranquility

It is easier to find God in the whirlwind than in the calm

So, if today you are sick, broken, battered, betrayed, addicted take heart. John 16:33In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

This is the world that Jesus has overcome. For you, trust Him today.

Now that your attention has been focused: Receive Him

But Let’s say that today you sit in the fat of the land,

your butt is in the buttertub of grace. You are in great cities you did not build

Houses full of good things you did not fill

         Cisterns you did not dig

Vineyards and olive trees you did not plant.

If you are born on third base you might be tempted to think you hit a triple.

When should you take care lest the Lord be forgotten?

When you eat and are full.

The Lord has a caution today for the famished and the full.

For the famished, have faith

For the full, have fear. Don’t forget. Take care lest you forget.

So if you had to say which one you are today

Are you hungry, homeless, hurting: turn to Him

Are you full, fat, flourishing: take care lest you forget
