Be With Me: 7 Minutes of Biblical Wonder

The ripple effects of divorce S29e57 Dt24:1

Michael Smith

In an unfallen world there would be marriage but  no divorce. However, we do not live in such a world.  Are there any principles that guide the nasty business of divorce?

God's eyes are upon marriage, and God's eyes are upon divorce.  Surely, this is going to affect more than just two people.

We all know there are indeed ripple effects from divorce. He calls us in the midst of all this fallenness, do "not bring sin upon the land." He charges the fallen to be careful, to try to limit the ripples.

The ripple effects of divorce S29e57 Dt24:1

Dt is a book where we witness evil.

Of course it is, it is at least partially about PEOPLE.

It is also a book where we watch what the only God, Holy holy holy, does to interactwith this evil people group.

How will a holy holy God make contact, and KEEP contact with a not very holy peopleliving amidst not very holy people groups

It is an important question for you personally

because He is executing a plan that eventually 3500 years from now

He is coming to get you; to demonstrate His love for you, call you, draw you, save you

He has to demonstrate His kindness to an undeserving people group, Israel, so that eventually He can demonstrate His kindness to an undeserving PERSON, YOU

24 “When a man takes a wife and marries her, if then she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, and she departs out of his house, 2 and if she goes and becomes another man’s wife, 3 and the latter man hates her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter man dies, who took her to be his wife, 4 then her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after she has been defiled, for that is an abomination before the Lord. And you shall not bring sin upon the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.

God loves marriage

God gives marriage to those who follow Him closely and to those who do not follow Him at all.

For those of you who are married, it is to be the great test of your character, the great revealing of your sin, and the most tangible mercy of the Lord to you.

God hates divorce

In an unfallen world there would be marriage but  no divorce.

Here, the husband has found an indecency. The Hebrew means he has found an indecency of the the genital area. That is a unseemly has been revealed in her nakedness. She has transgressed the marriage bed, covena

Obviously, this is serious business and must be handled carefully.

This is a bad day for all parties. Husband, wife and the Lord.

Worst possible day; day nobody wanted on their wedding day.

Husband didn’t want to find out that this is a reality

Wife didn’t want to be found out that this is a reality.

What to do in the world of the undesired. Situation no one desires

“God hates divorce” this is a reality I did not get from the bible.

I got it from my divorced friends. It is a pain and a regret that is never forgotten, and becomes a front burner issue every holiday, every paycheck and every other weekend if kids are involved.

The stakes are high. Relational economic & holiness factors are now in play.

So here, in a bad circumstance, he writes her a certificate of divorce.  This makes him consider at length what exactly he is going to do.

If she has become another man’s wife, and presumably bonded that marriage in another marriage bed, then he cannot take her after she has become defiled(ceremonially unclean) to marry a second time.

1.Eyes of the Lord are upon marriage.

2Eyes of the Lord are upon divorce. Hates it. It’s allowed, not authori

3Here, what is proposed is an ABOMINATION to the Lord.

You may not like it, but God is at liberty to define what is abom.

Yes, the Lord gets an opinion regarding the right conduct during marriage, and here during an undesired, unpreferred, disappointing, profoundly personal, relationally shaming conflict between this man and woman. Prob written to protect the ownership of the dowry from her 2nd

Or possibly by remarrying this woman that has now had sexual relations outside their previous marriage, he now commits adultery with her.

4Divorce affects more than just two people

5There is an overarching principle that is brought up here: You shal l not bring SIN upon the Land. (God was walking in their midst)

Catch that: in your marriage: do not bring sin upon the land

In your divorce: do not bring sin upon the land.

Other laws: how you treat conquered people, how you treat a lost OX, how you treat the access to the temple, myriads of other laws: DO NOT BRING SIN UPON the land, the people group you are in.

What if today we had that as our lapel pin. One thought per day. Do not bring sin upon the land in my relational life; my marriage life; my purity life;. It is not: every man does what is right in his own eyes as Judges condemns.  No. God is here. He has eyes-on.  We have eyes upon. We have His eyes upon us.

Whatever your task today, know that HE has eyes on it. He does not want us to bringsin upon the land, and we should not want to either.  Ripples?
