Deuteronomy

God is not a fan of kidnapping or abusing the poor S29e59 Dt 24:7

Justice kidnapping,

Mercy towards the poor, and the sojourner, the hard working, the borrower, the

7 “If a man is found stealing one of his brothers of the people of Israel, and if he treats him as a slave or sellshim, then that thief shall die. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.

,If you are wondering if God cares about kidnapping, look no further.

Yes, He does care tremendously.  Here we see His assessment as to stealing the LIBERTY of other Israelis. This is viewed as STEALING; and is the only theft for which the death penalty applies.

Of interest, other thefts of THINGS is not punishable by death.

But to steal another human, traffic them, enslave them, is punishable by death. Why? Because of the great value of human life, created by God and images Him uniquely. To mess with human life in this way is to come under the most severe wrath as you and your evil are purged from the midst

10 “When you make your neighbor a loan of any sort, you shall not go into his house to collect his pledge. 11 You shall stand outside, and the man to whom you make the loan shall bring the pledge out to you. 12 And if he is a poor man, you shall not sleep in his pledge. 13 You shall restore to him the pledge as the sun sets, that he may sleep in his cloak and bless you. And it shall be righteousness for you before the Lord your God.

, Tricky subject of loans amongst the people of God

If you make a loan within the brotherhood, do your best to maintain the dignity of the borrower in the followoinng ways:

Don’t go barging into his house to collect his pledge. Let him bring it out, let him have the dignity of the borders of his house.

If he pledges his cloak, which is the blanket for sleeping in the nighttime dessert cold, the LENDER is not allowed to “sleep in his pledge” or sleep in his cloak.

In fact, Bring him his cloak back as the sun sets, that the borrower may sleep in his cloak.

Now remember, at this moment, the financial loan has not been repaid. But MERCY is extended to the lender.

The bible is full of mercy . undeserved grace.

Really the whole thing is about mercy, from beginning to end.

From the garden of eden to garden of Gethsemene to the garden tomb the knuckleheads of the bible, every character, and by extension you an me, do NOT GET WHAT THEY DESERVE.

Every one does NOT WANT JUSTICE. Nobody wants what they deserve.

Getting what you deserve is Justice. No on want s that

Getting less than you deserve is mercy.

Getting Way more than you deserve is grace.

Only Jesus, 100% innocent bears the guilt of all who receive His work by faith.

God’s eye is especially upon the poor, the borrower, here the lender, the imposedupon, the sick, leperous, Coming up here the hired worker (don’t delay him his wages)the fatherless, the widow and the sojourner

Who is the sojourner? The person living out of his own country/culture

         Immagrant, foreigner, the stranger

God’s eye is on the powerful, the rich, those with a good harvest, leave some grain for the poor, leave a few olives on the trees after you beat them for harvest and leave some grapes after you harvest,

For them 21 When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not strip it afterward. It shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow. 22 You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore I command you to do this.

15 You shall give him his wages on the same day, before the sun sets (for he is poor and counts on it), lest he cry against you to the Lord, and you be guilty of sin.

.don’t oppress the poor or the needy. LEST HE CRY out to the lord against you, and you be guilty of sin

You can sin regarding your economic conduct.

You can be held liable for abusing the power that the “haves” have over the have-nots.

But remember, you came from nothing. From slavery. Don’t get on your high horse, because it was the LORD who saved you from Pharaoahs horses and pharaohs chariots.

Open handed dealing with those in your community who are particularly vulnerablemust be handled carefully, honestly and justly.

In fact, they should be conducted with a bias of generosity. Why?

And it shall be righteousness for you before the Lord your God.

X God sees this all. God assesses the motivations and actions of the rich and the poor.  A generous hand is seen as blameless behavior, loyal to the community; an asset of the people of God.

We shuld be treating others as if we are before the Lord God be cause we really ARE before the Lord.

If you KNEW that your financial actions were done before the eye of the Lord your God, what would have to change? What should change?
