Not every story ends with rainbows.  Similarly, some psalms stop in the middle of hardship.  They are called laments.

Today will be about how to live when there is not a rainbow at the end of the day.  With what insight does this psalm leave for us when the day does not end with rainbows.

Living in a day without rainbows s30e95 Ps89

What am I gonna do when the day has no rainbows? When the story ends without a really happy ending. Many psalms present as a problem, a spiritual resolve, and a resolution and big time praise at the end. This is not one of them.  This is a lament. It is real.  What do I do when times are tough, when I am living in a world without rainbows?

I Will Sing of the Steadfast Love of the Lord—the question is WHEN will i sing. Will I sing when times are particularly bad, and it it my fault.

89 A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite.

1    I will sing of the steadfast love of the Lord, forever;

with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations.

2    For I said, “Steadfast love will be built up forever;

in the heavens you will establish your faithfulness.”

3    You have said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one;

I have sworn to David my servant:

4    ‘I will establish your offspring forever,

and build your throne for all generations.’ ” Selah

,Gotta love Ps89 mentions HESED 7 times.  It is not a record in the psalms, but it is on the podium for recalling and relying upon not our record of faithfulness, but HISrecord of faithfulness.

Here Ethan the Ezrahite, sings of this faithfulness, specifically through the lens of looking at throne and office of DAVID.

As David goes, so goes those who stand on the same promises he did

A big point is that this throne of David , the heritage we receive from His faithfulness to this line of leadership is now present and active in Jesus.

It is in some ways a psalm about Jesus.

6    For who in the skies can be compared to the Lord?

Who among the heavenly beings is like the Lord,

9    You rule the raging of the sea;

11    The heavens are yours;

13    You have a mighty arm;

strong is your hand, high your right hand.

14    Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;

steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.

15    Blessed are the people who know the festal shout,

who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face,

16    who exult in your name all the day

and in your righteousness are exalted.

,You are creator. You are powerful. Righteous Just steadfast love and faithfulness go before you

We people are blessed if we walk in your covenant

Oh No section:19-45

30    If his children forsake my law

and do not keep my commandments,

32    then I will punish their transgression with the rod

and their iniquity with stripes,

33    but I will not remove from him my steadfast love

or be false to my faithfulness.

34    I will not violate my covenant

,I am not going to let my children’s misdeed go unpunished.

The favor of the Lord is to have His attention, and if necessary, His discipline

Lord says: But I am still in a permanent, familial relationship with you

         This is the covenantal faithfulness of God towards an often-unfaithful people

Lord says, I will not, I cannot be false to my faithfulness.

The dynasty of David continues to be successful, not because of the perfection of David, but because of the permanent, perfection of Jesus, and the faithfulness of God to a covenant.

The psalm then enters a LONG section of what the discipline of the Lord feels like; 38 CAST off, rejected, under wrath, in ruins, plundered, defeated and cut short. The n the cry out:

46    How long, O Lord? Will you hide yourself forever?

How long will your wrath burn like fire?

47    Remember how short my time is!

For what vanity you have created all the children of man!

48    What man can live and never see death?

Who can deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah

49    Lord, where is your steadfast love of old,

which by your faithfulness you swore to David?

50    Remember, O Lord, how your servants are mocked,

and how I bear in my heart the insults of all the many nations,

51    with which your enemies mock, O Lord,

with which they mock the footsteps of your anointed.

52    Blessed be the Lord forever!

Amen and Amen.

Lord we cry out, in this wilderness spiritual experience:

I want to see this again. Show me your steadfast love by showing me the throne of David!

This psalm is labeled a. LAMENT: It doesn’t end with rainbows

What do we do when we are in the thick of it? What happens when a fallen person lives with fallen people, in a fallen world.

And what will we do when the world without rainbow?

At least when there are no rainbows in sight.

When the day does not end with rainbows

         Remember the creation and activity of God

         Remember the specific goodness You promised through David’s throne

         Remember the covenantal faithfulness x7 as demonstrated by throne

Cry out to God on this day of no rainbows52      Blessed be the Lord forever!

Amen and Amen.

Glimmer of hope: blessed be the Lord forever!
