We weren't created to be finite. We are infinite, eternal beings...just not here in this life.  Someday, death will be no more.

Meantime, Psalm 90 teaches us how long a typical life is.  It is important, because there is stuff to do before the final bell tolls.

Join me for 7 minutes today, at -3F, to find out how long you are going to live.

 I know how long you are going to live s30e148 Psalm90

We all wonder how long we are going to live.  Moses Psalm 90 tells us.

90      1           Lord, you have been our dwelling place

in all generations.

2    Before the mountains were brought forth,

or ever you had formed the earth and the world,

from everlasting to everlasting you are God. N

Who is God. Who are we

Who are we in comparison to God. What is our relationship?

What characteristics of God MUST WE KNOW before finishing this psalm?

Characteristics: The Lord is a dwelling place. Refuge. Are you metaphorically living in Him, trusting, relying, put your eggs in His basket? Vote with your feet. Are you serving? Are you fellowshipping? Are you giving? Are you attending? Are you putting yourself before His word. If so, then perhaps He is your dwelling place. If not, don’t tell me He is your dwelling place. Don’t tell me you abide in Him.

3    You return man to dust

and say, “Return, O children of man!”

4    For a thousand years in your sight

are but as yesterday when it is past,

or as a watch in the night.

5    You sweep them away as with a flood; they are like a dream,

like grass that is renewed in the morning:

6    in the morning it flourishes and is renewed;

in the evening it fades and withers. N

We are dust. We started as dust. We return to dust.

It is OK to be dust. Ps 103 reminds us that HE KNOWS our frame, he remembers that we are dust.

Our earthly life is temporary.

He is eternal. 1000 years are like a night watch of couple of hours

Years are like the grass. A dream that flourishes for a moment then fades.

God is eternal and in charge of time.

For now, every moment we live is in the mire, in the tarpit of time

But Our Lord invented time, is above it, controls it

Mankind: we may think we are powerful, but of the greatest of us, who has stopped time? Ghengus Kahn, Nicholas Tesla, Harry Houdini? Presidents and paupers all flourish temporarily and fade to dust.

So then, we’d best be proclaiming and submitting to God: YOU ARE GOD, from everlasting to everlasting. V.2

7    For we are brought to an end by your anger;

by your wrath we are dismayed.

8    You have set our iniquities before you,

our secret sins in the light of your presence. N

Oh no. Our iniquities are before you. Our secret sins are not secret.

Here is why the “goodness of man” can never be good enough.  Here is why your own mother cannot make it to heaven based on her thoughts, her love , her deeds:

Because her sins are compared IN THE LIGHT OF YOUR PRESENCE.

The point from yesterdays video is not whether your mother is better than Jeffry Dahmer, it is what her secret sins, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, look like in the light of Your presence.

Yup, we are agents then of wrath. Our forefathers and mothers are agents of wrath, Your anger is justified. End of story….Or is it?

9    For all our days pass away under your wrath;

we bring our years to an end like a sigh.

10    The years of our life are seventy,

or even by reason of strength eighty;

       yet their span is but toil and trouble;

they are soon gone, and we fly away.

11    Who considers the power of your anger,

and your wrath according to the fear of you? N

Here is the 2nd most famous line in this Psalm.

I think the most famous is v. 12 So teach us to number our days

That we may get a heart of wisdom.

We’ll get there tomorrow.

But before we do: Our days are passing. They add up to wrath (In the light of your presence) In comparison to perfect pure, holiness

Life is short, shorter all the time. Life is precious. Life is short.

The years of our life HERE are not infinite.  They are infinite somewhere, but not here.

What’s typical? What’s average. What’s a good long life? 70. Or by reason of strength, EIGHTY.

Let’s go over a few things. Revelation 21:4

4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

We weren’t created for death. Death is a horrible consequence of our sin. Now it is a reality, but it won’t always be.

God is going to fix our death problem. Permanently.

The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 1 cor 15:26 5 For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, 3 if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. 4 For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 2 cor 5:1

Do you have some groaning over the reality of death? Then Ps 90 is for you. Do you long to put on your heavenly dwelling? Then make God your dwelling place NOW. This is what it means to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.
