Be With Me is a daily 7 minute chronological walk through the New Testament hosted by Michael Smith. It is for everyone who is curious about what Jesus actually said and did in the gospels. Most episodes will leave you with at least one good thought to chew on for the rest of the day. We start with the Bible and hopefully end with Awe. We are walking through the chronological events of Jesus' life and then thoughtfully considering them. It is meant to spur the devotional life of the Christian and the not-yet-Christian. We occasionally venture into the Old Testament when it helps our understanding of the New Testament events. Everybody has 7 minutes. Everybody needs to wonder. Be With Me is hosted by Michael Smith who has absolutely no special qualifications to do a podcast. He is not a pastor. He has not been to seminary. He does not lead a mega-church. He is not a professional and he has no more credentials than you do. He does, however, follow a great God with an observant eye and a curious heart. Joseph is rightfully afraid of marrying Mary. She may come with stoning, not just of her, but of Joseph too.
To get Joseph moving on this point, God sends an angel to announce the truth:
Mary has conceived by an act of the Holy Spirit
It's a boy. His name is Jesus and He has a job: to save people from their sins.

OK Mr. Joseph. You are afraid of taking Mary as your wife. Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Because of her apparent infidelity during a commited, betrothal period, a period of time so serious, she is referred to as “Wife, and you as HUSBAND”, though still not married and still not sleeping together.
19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.
So you resolve, you decide to divorce her quietly. He stood with her when he was pretty sure she had lain with another
Try to get out of this situation without blood shed for her.
You might be afraid to take her as wife because that might put her AND YOU under suspicion for sexual dalliances before marriage.
This would put then not just here life in potential jeapordy but yours as well.
Because of this fear of marrying Mary, God sends a usually big scary angel. The scriptures confirm JOSEPH is afraid of MARY, but doesn’t comment on the ANGEL
20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
I am addressing you by your big-boy name. because this is going to require of you big-boy-decision, change your mind.
You have to change your mind on this one Joseph.
You have already decided NOT to marry Mary, I’m telling you otherwise: YES marry her and don’t be afraid
Here is the explaination: that with is conceived is from the Holy spirit.
Now Joseph may have been wondering at this point, who is the Holy Spirit? There is not an understanding of the triune God. The 3 in one yet.
This is a very big ask.
Couple of OT references: David, Judges, Ezekial. You kind of have to look for them. Not enough to build a solid theology around
This is a big ask: to believe that this pregnancy conception is different than all the rest in the corredors of time.
To believe 100% of conceptions are not from a man and woman.
That this one is different. This one is from the Holy Spirit.
A conception from the Person of the Holy Spirit of the Trinity
A conception of the Person of the SON of God of the Trinity
Sent by the Person of the Father of the Trinity
Announced to Joseph by an Angel of God
You’d BETTER send an angel. This is a lot to digest
This is a lot to believe. He goes on: Angel speaking:
21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” :
1. Child is going to make it
2. It will be a son
3. The son already has a name.
4. The Son has a role a task: impossible: Save people from what?
Something they have been unwaveringly attached to over the history of the world:
Adam and eve in the garden
People of noah’s time
Every single person in that geneology
In a sense we LOVE our sin
We do sin and give approval to those around us who do sin so it makes us feel better about sinning . Romans 1
We LOVE the darkness lest our works be exposed. John 3
All have fallen short
We have itching ears for that which is not the truth
We have been faced with the biggest question of the world:
What will we do about our sin?
Every answer to this question up to this moment in human history has been temporary, inadequate, stop-gap, erroneous, imperfect.
What’s the big deal with Jesus?
Answer #2 is He has come to be with us…and all that entails
Answer #1 is from our Angel announcer:
A savior is coming.
The Savior has a name.
The Savior’s name is Jesus
Don’t use His name in vain. Don’t tolerate those who do.
The Savior has a job.
The Savior’s job is: to SAVE people from SINS.
Separate the up to this point inseperable
Sins attached to people. God is saying we gotta get this thing off of you. We gotta save you from this epidemic that has captured every single human who has ever lived. Every one. Imagine this news:
