Be With Me is a daily 7 minute chronological walk through the New Testament hosted by Michael Smith. It is for everyone who is curious about what Jesus actually said and did in the gospels. Most episodes will leave you with at least one good thought to chew on for the rest of the day. We start with the Bible and hopefully end with Awe. We are walking through the chronological events of Jesus' life and then thoughtfully considering them. It is meant to spur the devotional life of the Christian and the not-yet-Christian. We occasionally venture into the Old Testament when it helps our understanding of the New Testament events. Everybody has 7 minutes. Everybody needs to wonder. Be With Me is hosted by Michael Smith who has absolutely no special qualifications to do a podcast. He is not a pastor. He has not been to seminary. He does not lead a mega-church. He is not a professional and he has no more credentials than you do. He does, however, follow a great God with an observant eye and a curious heart. We hear the name of "Jesus" relatively frequently. Many times the name is used "in vain" or without purpose, perhaps in cursing. But there comes a moment when that name becomes associated with the true God and with purpose.
He says He comes to save us from our sins. Nothing else has ever worked.
At a certain moment, the generic name of Jesus can become the SAVING name of Jesus. Everybody must come to this moment. Listen as we hear of such a moment in a man by the name of Joseph.

We left Joseph in the “arms of an angel”… or in the presence of an angel. The angel came not to embrace him but to command him, and explain to him some things.
Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
1. I’m addressing you by your big boy name.
2. Stop being afraid to take mary as your wife.
3. Mary is not pregnant by another dude, but miraculously by the HS
4. Mary has not betrayed you in this betrothal
5. Rather than divorcing her, you get her back
6. Go marry that girl-at least for now don’t break that relationshi
21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
7. 7.Your gender reveal is a boy
8. Your name reveal is JESUS . Normally this would be the prerogative of the mother and specifically father of the child. In a sense, as non-father, custodial father only, this makes some sense that this is God’s job.
9. Your child’s job is to separate the unseparatable up to this point
22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel”
(which means, God with us).
So this situation is bigger than just you two now three.
What is happening here is a fulfillment of prophesy and specifically this prophesy in Is 7:4
Here the angel, he, all angels are male: connects the old testament to what will be the first words of the new testament.
A virgin will conceive.
We find out about Mary’s zipper for all the other days before this
Mary is a virgin and will be thru birth
She will be the only virgin to give birth
Mary didn’t betray you at this moment nor at other previous moments Mr. Joseph.
Jesus is the long awaited Savior 600 years ago.
The Savior will be a son
His name is Jesus. His name is Immanuel. God with us.
Of course it is. We have been waiting for this.
The world that you created has been waiting in a bit of frustration for you. All the methods and efforts at our own sin-management have utterly failed.
Welcome home Jesus. At least welcome to the home you created.
Matthew’s Gospel the good news tells us this big good news:
GOD IS WITH US, specifically palpably tactilely with us in Jesus
Immanuel is more than just a name, though in this era, there was a much greater association of ones NAME and one’s character.
This just reemphasizes the importance of this moment and this action of God. God is coming to be with us in a new way.
It is a most needed way: v. 21 for He will save His people from their sins. It is a theme of Matthew. Gospels, epistles and eternity in Revelation.
How does Joseph respond to this big ask? . . 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.
Did Joseph have the agency to say no to an angel. Yes.
Did he obey? YES. He did as the angel commanded:
He took , retook Mary as wife==meaning betrothed
Restored the engaged relationship doesn’t say when they got married
Backed up the divorce her quietly idea
He again perservered to preserved her sexual purity
he had been doing up to this point- a virgin must be the one doing all of this. Joseph is not covanentally at liberty to consummate this marriage until they are married and this will be AFTER the birth. Mary is to be a virginuntil this kid is out and being called names. Step 7 of the engagement process the marriage process is the consummation. That will be AFTER birth.
And then: He called His name JESUS.
Joseph is the third person to hear the name of Jesus as Savior.
The first is Mary, 3-4 months ago
The second is Elizabeth, who Mary visits for most of that time
Mary knew Jesus’ name before that visit from an angel
The third we know about, could be the second: Joseph hears the name of his step son. Joseph hears the name of the Savior. Joseph hears the name of HIS Savior that He must trust in.
People hear the name of Jesus often.
But there is a moment when the name ofsaving name of Jesus is heard for the first time. When was yours? Or perhaps this is it. Like Joe, call on Him!
