Be With Me: 7 Minutes of Biblical Wonder
Be With Me is a daily 7 minute chronological walk through the New Testament hosted by Michael Smith. It is for everyone who is curious about what Jesus actually said and did in the gospels. Most episodes will leave you with at least one good thought to chew on for the rest of the day. We start with the Bible and hopefully end with Awe. We are walking through the chronological events of Jesus' life and then thoughtfully considering them. It is meant to spur the devotional life of the Christian and the not-yet-Christian. We occasionally venture into the Old Testament when it helps our understanding of the New Testament events. Everybody has 7 minutes. Everybody needs to wonder. Be With Me is hosted by Michael Smith who has absolutely no special qualifications to do a podcast. He is not a pastor. He has not been to seminary. He does not lead a mega-church. He is not a professional and he has no more credentials than you do. He does, however, follow a great God with an observant eye and a curious heart. Each day, he starts with a study bible and aims for astonishment. ‘be with him’ for 7 minutes as he sets out daily to discover the God who invites us to ‘Be With Me.’

My brothers and sisters. Take heart, my son. Your sins are forgiven. This is from Matthew chapter 9, verse number 2. We're gonna break it down today. These are the things I want you to think about. Take heart. My son, your sins are forgiven. Now, this is exceptionally good news, and we should have courage and confidence in this. So let me break it down. Take heart. It means be happy about this and be confident in this. Because what I'm gonna tell you next, the rest of the sentence, you should be experiencing this. This is an over bold reality. It's audacious. So listen in here. That's number one. Secondly, my son. What a great lead into this. Is uh the story is a paralyzed man is carried to Jesus, and he calls him before he does anything, forgives a sin and then heals him. He calls him his son. Now, what a great lead in this is. So it's saying to this man, young man, we are in a familial relationship, and blood is thicker than water. So I'm dealing with you with the mercy that one needs to have in an extended family. It means that there's going to be permanence in a relationship, maybe a little extra grace, maybe a little extra tolerance. So there has to be forgiveness for there to be ongoing relationship. I always say that what's the most important marital skill? And in my humble opinion, it's forgiveness. And the other side of it is restoration and repentance. So imagine a young couple, they they they romance and then they get engaged and then they on their then they get married. And at some point on in their relationship, one person is going to sin against the other person. Could be either way, and it it does go both ways. Maybe it's on their honeymoon, let's say. And so the bride, now married, has to answer this question, which is, will I forgive this person? In other words, is this marriage over at the first transgression? And of course, hopefully not. Um, and but she has to forgive, otherwise, the first sin is going to be the end of the marriage. So Jesus is saying, kind of in the same familiar relationship here, is we have to have family forgiveness amongst each other. For ongoing familiar relationship to exist, there must be forgiveness. Otherwise, the relationship ends at the first transgression. So take heart, my son, family. Next, your sin. Now, here's the backstory. Since the Garden of Eden, the first page of the Bible and the first moment of history, since the day that you were born, men and women have been dealing with sin. And every spiritual attempt, futile, every made-up God, small g, every made-up relationship with these small g gods, every religion that was not or is not worshipful to the one true God, has to address two main issues. What do you do about your death and what do you do about your sin? And even the Jews with the one true God had this temporary, insufficient, repeated mechanism of sacrifice to satisfy God as they tried to answer the first, or God answered the question in a shadowy sort of a way, waiting for the Savior Jesus. But all that was for what are you going to do about your sin? So what do you say of those who say, hey, I don't I don't sin? Well, my question is for you is then, where did you get that? You're not, you have to base your response on something, and I would say base it on the what God has accurately and faithfully transmitted to our world by the writings of the Old Testament and the New Testament. Well, how about if I don't believe the Bible? Well, then God has put a conscience inside every person. Unless it's extinguished, there is a still small voice that leaves a moral witness for everybody. Now, there is a condition where you can become futile in your thinking, where we don't honor God, and our hearts become darkened. Listen to this. This is from Romans chapter one, one of the harshest things ever said in the Bible. Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worship and serve the creature rather than the Creator who was blessed forever. And since they did not see the skipping down, verse 28, Romans 1, 28, and since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up, again, to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithful, heartless, and ruthless. And then here's verse 32. Though they know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve desire to die, they not only do them, but give approval to those who practice them. So our verse today from Matthew chapter 9 Take heart, my son, your sins are forgiven. Don't tell me there's no sin, and don't tell me there's no sin in you. So even in this worst case scenario in Romans chapter 1, there's truth in verse 31 to 32, which is, though they know God's righteous decree. So even our wayward brothers and sisters know God's decree, either by word or by conscience. Alright, so here's the best news then this whole business is our forgiven. So Jesus is claiming the right to both call sin, but also call for the remedy. And who is qualified? Can Jesus really offer this? Can we put our sin, can he put our sins behind his back, never to be seen again, and change history as this as if this never happened? Now for humans, for us, this is impossible. We have a long list. But for God, who is we have a God so unlike us, will he forgive our sins? Does Jesus have the authority to forgive sins? Oh yes. And does he have the willingness to do this? Yes. So this is the most critical of our Christian beliefs. You have a sin problem, and he has a sin solution. So what do we need to do to access this? It's have faith. So let's review. Take heart. We should have over bold confidence in this reality. My son, he's going to be treating us with ongoing familial commitment. Your sins. Yep, there's the bad news. You know it, and I know it. And then are forgiven. Do you really believe this? Do you really do this, Lord Jesus? Answer yes. Thanks for listening.
