SPEAKER_03Well, hello, I'm Dr. Julia Royston. Welcome to another episode of the Book Business Mall Show, where I'm always seeking to help you get your message to the masses, turn your words into wealth, and be a book business boss. So we've been talking about figuring out what you're selling, figuring in out, um, you know, that you're in for the long haul. So we're gonna be building something. We're not, it's not microwave, it's gonna be uh not necessarily the slow cooker, but it's gonna be cooked, you know. Um it's the comedian who says there's a difference in cooking something and fixing something. Fixing maybe pre-packaged and already ta-da, here it is. But cooking something is when you, you know, you want it to last for the long haul. You want it to be um something even to pass on to the next generation. So uh I was recently, as you can tell, I often um I'm on social media a lot. Um I make money on social media, I make connections on social media, um, email, all of that, in person. I use it all. And that's that's something you should keep in mind too as well, because it's not just one way, but I use multiple ways to gain access with with um, thank God for Envision Radio, and um, you know, just multiple ways that I meet people and engage with people. Um, you have to uh understand, and I've mentioned it before, but I'll mention again here while I'm thinking about it. Um, you got to uh business is gonna be sometimes associated and oftentimes associated with your personality. And um, if you're kind of an introvert, you may have to come out of your uh comfort zone. If you're an extrovert, you've got to make sure you channel it correctly and don't overdo it. So I'm considered, they tell me, an ambivert. I have introvert tendencies and uh I have extrovert, natural extrovert, but I have industry introvert tendencies, especially when I'm writing. But my personality is a part of that. So when um I was watching this video, and this gentleman had these uh products and they were purses, and I was like, oh, that's so nice. Ooh, wonder how much they are. No link. I was so frustrated, and then he didn't leave it open for comments because sometimes, as an entrepreneur, as a business owner, sometimes the customer has to tell you, especially if you're not naturally business savvy, you're creative, you uh you're you're good with with designing something and all that. But when it's time to sell it, that's a totally different hat. When it's time to market it and promote it, and then actually sell, it's something else. You have to put on a different mindset and a different thinking process. So then he's selling the video beautiful purses, and he was, you know, saying, you know, I I can rival the big um brands, and he could. He was building a brand itself. He didn't need to compare himself to nobody. If if the quality of the material that he was showing was correct and all that, but he only had the ability to like it, share it, and save it. So he only had the ability to like it, share it, and save it. Okay, so I go to the profile. Of course, the profile is gonna have in the bio, it's gonna have the link of where you can buy and when you get, even if they don't say it. Most of the time in a video they say uh be able to purchase in the bio. No. And as a matter of fact, the bio was to he was selling purses on something for uh like traditional art gallery. And I'm like, okay, I don't have any problem with diversified uh products. You have multiple things, especially if you're a multiple creative. I mean, when you go on um majority of everything is books, but then if if I want to, here you go, it's a music CD. Oh, here's a song I got. Oh no, no, no. Here's a shirt, here's a hat, here's a it's all on there. So I don't have any problem with diversified products and having multiple streams and multiple, have no problem with that. You had no way for me to get it. So when I went to the there was no, so you're expecting me to search, find your name, find the gallery, go online and do a search? No. And I I know I'm not typical. I guess, you know, sometimes I just if I really, really, really wanted something and didn't, you know, have a collection of purses, hallelujah, uh, I might have done it. But normally people are clicking. They want to get to the place two or three clicks at a time. So I you know, I just I was frustrated for me as a consumer, but then I was even more frustrated as a coach. I was even more frustrated for him because his facial features and everything was, you know, he was just in dire need of you to share it and comment and like. Well, first off, he didn't give a place for me to comment, but you wanted it to be seen by me more people, but you did not make it easy for people to buy. You wanted it to be seen by people, but did not make it easy for people to buy. I would I said that again on purpose because I want that to sink in. Whatever you're selling. The book business ball starts with books. So if you have a book, great. But if you have found me and it is about business and whatever that product or service, body, butter, t-shirt, makeup, jewelry, shoes, whatever you're selling, make it easy for people to buy. Give them a reason, give make it easy, make the product or service easy to find, but easy to buy. So when I first started out 18 years ago, I didn't have a you know, elaborate website and all that. I did have a newsletter where you could find me because I was primarily singing. And then when my first client came that was outside of myself, because at that time I probably had three books I had of my own. And then I had music, and then that was through CD Baby for music. And so when I first started, I knew I needed, you know, I would have raised an entrepreneur, so I knew I wanted to be profitable and for profit. I knew also I needed a ministry along with it. I wasn't finalized 501c3, that didn't happen till many years later. But my first service was done for you. She didn't want to learn. So I knew one, I wanted to be profitable. Two, it was done for you. That was the request of the client. I offered to teach her, I was a teacher every day. That wasn't gonna be a problem because I'd done it for myself already, three books, and it was poetry and devotionals. I'm good. I I had the skill to do what they what what she wanted, but she wanted it done for her and not didn't want to teach her. And so when I first started, yes, I did want to be profitable for profit, and I and the client requested because this sometimes is the procedure that happens for you with your books. They ask for more. Remember, we talked about it with being a coach, a speaker. Come speak at our event. Uh, will you coach me? Wait a but for this, for for this avenue, these are people who have products, these are people who offer workshops already or are going to based on their book, or write a book that goes along with their business, because you could have a business without the book. So, therefore, a done-for-you system. So, when you're doing a done-for-you system, that means there's certain information you're gonna need, there's certain things that you're gonna need from them, in addition to the product and the price and all that. But you got to understand what they're formatting, what they're looking for, and what you offer and what you can do. Over time, I added done for you. Uh, I collect got an illustrator, thankful to my brother-in-law who knew an illustrator, uh, and then you know, more illustrators and more that system. But the very first one was done for you. I was willing to do it for you. Now, 18 years later, over time, people have uh begun to self-publish on their own. Now, there's there's nine billion people on the planet, there's plenty of different ways, and there's plenty of people who don't have a book at all. Uh, Big Mama died, and she had a cookbook, and this one died, and he had a book finished. As a matter of fact, I've done a proposal for that, I've done a proposal for somebody else wanting to publish something based on what their husband wrote or what their wife wrote. So a done for you service. Now I can teach you. I can teach you. I have a class for that, I have courses already set up there, I can teach you. It's more guided. First, do it for you is produce something for you. You pay me, I do the work. That's what I tell people all the time. You pay me, I do the work. So that is the do-it for you system. The teach you is more guided. I'm teaching you turn the page, get the handout, step one, step two, step three. And if you register for the class, I give you the replay so you can repeat it. You and I've had people sell it. Not my framework, but my my method. They learned it, they turned it into their own company. And yay, I'm sitting on the sideline glad. People have been through my publish that book now course, and now when I get overloaded, we partner together, I pay you to do some of the things that I'm overloaded and can't do or need help doing, which is a good problem for them and for me. But then now, after 18 years, there are people who want to know how to do it. They don't want to be in the class, they don't want to guide it, they just wanted to do it myself. Give me the tools, and the tools are so helpful and so step by step, just like I'm going through with the podcast, they can do it themselves. So they'll write that book now, publish that book now, promote that book now. I've had people who've actually used those tools and done it themselves. Yeah. And so, you know, and it's been a course and they figure it out and they go on and do it themselves. Some people have that ability. But some people, there are still people out there that don't want to learn. They only want to take the class, they want to pay me and do it yourself. Each one of those price points is different. Each one of the package, do it for you, is different than the teach you. It's different from the here, the do-it-yourself tools. Here's the instant access. That's what uh the new terminology for um self-guided, self-worth. People people don't like that terminology. So they came with instant access course. That's the new uh buzzword. So put that in your tool belt and put that in your storage. It's the instant access. So for me, as a uh business owner that's pivoted, and I feel like I pivoted and twirled and changed and and and about face and all the things in 18 years to stay relevant, to stay informed, and there's still things I miss. So that's the reason why I have a village of people around me who ask me, who send me, who whatever um information. Have you seen this, Julia? Do you know about this? I'm like, I know a piece of it, but I haven't had time to do a deep dive into it. Or I saw that, but I haven't had gotten around to reading the whole article, watching the whole training, or getting the whole video. That's on my list, though. So you have to decide. You know, what does it a journey, it's a step. So are you ready to just say, here, here are the tools, here's the box, you figured out. I've given you everything. Uh if you need a cli if you need a session with me, here's an hour. Or is it teach you, let me teach you how or are you willing to do it for them? And then, of course, my next step beyond that, I have the book, it's not selling, I have this, and I need help with this, it's something's not happening, and then it's beyond. Because some people can do it themselves, some people want it done for you, some people want to learn, but then some people need coaching and mentoring to guide them through the next steps. They've done so much, but they need the next level, and that comes with experience, that comes with expertise, that comes with knowledge, that comes with training, that comes with a lot of other things. But you first have to decide where you're gonna start. And honestly, I didn't decide. It decided for me. I tell people all the time, I always have. The game came to me. The game came to me. I'll take a break right here, I'll be back with more. Are you ready to read, learn, grow, and take your next bold step? I'm Dr. Julia Royston, and you're listening to the Book Business Boss show, helping you get your message to the masses, turn your words into wealth, and be a book business boss. So one of the things that um when you're starting to move your book into a business, what is your business looking at it? So we've been talking about for-profit, and I'm gonna lean heavily into for-profit. Nonprofit is a different beast, is a totally different animal and a way to do business, is still generating income, still finding out ways to produce prior programming, who is your audience, all of those things, and that's a different business model, but you still need to generate income for that model. But let's lean into the for-profit model. And so we've been talking about are you gonna be doing it for them? Are you gonna be teaching them? Are you gonna provide them tools to do it themselves, or is it gonna be a combination of all of it? Or are you um at a level where uh a business that is uh it's gonna be service providing, but it is more advanced. Um, for example, people, you know, business coaching, those are people who've had businesses for a while, who need assistance scaling their business or moving their business to the next level. You have to determine that. Um, my business has always attracted people who are at the beginning stages. I realize that. Who either don't know how or don't want to learn how. Now, I have worked with people who've uh traditionally published, who've done uh different things and they want to try something new and and and they want to experience being with me or whatever. I I've I've done that, but my core audience is above 40. I know who my audience is, and they are either publishing their first book or they went in a different direction and they're wanting to change direction and they want additional services, they want something different, and but they have to decide are they willing to pay for it? Are they do they have the budget for it? Do they have to go save for it? How does that look and what does that look like? So you you got some decisions, some more decisions to make. Because when people read your book or you've spoken, or you've been at a networking event, and or even you are in a business incubator and you decide this is something that you want to do, then you have to decide which one of those models am I going to start with or at least expand with. Because if if it's something that you're doing for them, you got to have the infrastructure to be able to do that. My technology knowledge helped me do that. My technology background and creativity and word and publisher and the office suite and you know all the all the things that I needed 18 years ago was great. But now, how am I gonna incorporate that without having to build a team? And I have a team, but build a team even better. So the AI tools help me. And I know some people are like, oh, but no, no, no. For business um methods and business strategies, AI has been a great help and help format, help lay out, help a lot of things. Not necessarily specifically the books, but as much as systems getting in order, agreements getting in order, for even the attorneys to review. And I don't have to start all over from scratch. There are, you know, people don't come with their book descriptions and don't want to come up with one. We need a professional one, we need a flyer, we need, you know, just all kinds of things that AI has helped us to do. Now, having taught on AI, I've done a presentation on it, but it's, you know, deciding. All right, for this, for me, it is I still do it done for you, I still teach you, and I still have the tools and resources for you to do it yourself. I do the same exact thing. A young woman said, I don't think I have the money for a package because I gave her a rough decimant. I said, Well, I have the books service and I have the courses already. I send her the links, I I, you know, that's passive income, make money in my sleep. So you have to be able to decide that, but you don't want to overwhelm yourself when you first start. So lean into your strength. What are you strong at? What is your strength? Are you stronger at creating products and helping people that way and saying, here's the guide, here's the here's the manual, here's the curriculum, here's the one, two, three steps. Or are you better with like I am doing it for you and helping to satisfy the client? Now, the done for you, you need patience, you need uh endurance, you need you need a lot of things because people's lives do different things. I have had people almost done with the project, and a storm come, a hurricane came, um, somebody had a baby, uh, blew out a tire, not able to pay their balance right now, somebody died, the house was on fire, a flood came, all kinds of things in 18 years. The person so therefore having the patience that if you're gonna do a done for you system along with somebody else, that there's a different mindset. When I sell you the right publish and promote package, send you the link to the courses, that's on you. You know, I have to have the back systems already set up to be able to take that and to be able to do that, but otherwise, you know, I'm I'm not able to um do that. So therefore, I have to have uh the opportunity to be able to, um and the patience and the personality and the system set up to be able to do that. So, you know, what what is what does that look like for you? What should that look like for you? And being able to know, okay, I want a for-profit business, but um do it for you, teach you, do it yourself, all those things you got to decide, you got to determine that, and it can evolve. You can be like me, start with the done for you system, then go to the teach you, then go to the do-it-yourself. You can decide all those things and beyond, but start somewhere, straw or start with your strength, start with the place where uh you're the strongest. And I had done those books and I was ready to do it for somebody else. I hope this has helped you. I'm Dr. Julia Royston. Um and uh if you need me, you know how to find me. Talkwithroyston.com. Let's have a conversation. Uh, get on my calendar. Remember, it's Eastern time zone, and let's talk about that. Moving your book into a business. Until next time, be blessed. Bye-bye.
