Hello, I'm Dr. Julia Royston. Welcome to another episode of the Book Business Boss Show where I am helping you get your message to the masses, turn your words into wealth, and be a book business boss. So I want to continue on the vein of setting up what you want your business to look like. We're going from book to business, and I realize that some of you may be saying, this is a little difficult for me because I really just wanted to write a book. I didn't have in my mind about uh business and branding and all those side of things. But remember, always remember that your book is your intellectual property. It came from your head and it's something you developed, you created. Yeah, you had people help you and all that good stuff. But besides that, it is something that can be profitable. We always have to keep that in mind. Even, oh, I just write because I love it. Oh, I just write because it feels good. Oh, it's therapy, it's whatever. But it also can be a source of income. It also can be um profitable. That's just it, bottom line. You can sell books, you can sell ebooks, you can sell audiobooks. That's just three formats right there. You can um, you know, you can have um uh figurines and toys designed to go along, especially with children's books. I have the book bear, and and I usually sell bears or I give bears with orders. Um, so there are multiple streams of income that can derive from just that one book. And another stream of income is when you're speaking from your book, uh, having a podcast based on your book, based on the message of your book. Um you can coach, you know, there's all multitudes, uh multiplicity of ways for income that can come directly from uh your book. You can also teach based on your book. You can speak about it, but you can also teach, which, you know, my speaking and my teaching kind of flows together because I'm hoping that you'll get some instruction while you're listening to me. But you get the idea, and uh the ways that um this book business can be set up is left up to you how far you want to go, how fast you want to go. But I want to give you the principles uh of this process and this journey. Um, so that's what this podcast is really, this show is all about. Um, but it's also about taking you step by step. Because I didn't jump from point A to point M right away. It was a step-by-step process and a decision-making process, etc. And so um today my question is um, what do you want the book to do, in short? You have the book, but what do you want it to do? And that gets involved in designing either uh a message surrounding your book, the brand, what you want it to look like, how you want it to look like, and then repeat. It's a constant um getting it out there, speaking about it, etc. So I I just want to pause here even before I start. There are three things that when I first started, that even before Message to the Masses, Words into Wealth, uh, my first tag was always educate, inform, and entertain. Educate and inform was first because that was more for my devotionals, for my nonfiction books. Entertainment moved me to fiction and even children's, but even children's books, I wanted to educate and inform. I've had to since um tweak my signatures because my email signature always had that at the end. Inform, educate, entertain, or educate, inform, and entertain. My first graphics, my first business cards, my about.me all had that on there. Educate, inform, entertain. But then I moved more to a business model of message to the masses, words into wealth because I was really focusing on um the profit side of writing. I still talk about the passion of it, the love of it, but in this economy that we're in, I want to shine a big light that it can have the potential to be profitable. So I want you to know that. I want you to know that when you fall on hard times and you're looking around and job loss, job um downturn, company moved, you know, whatever happened, that you still have something that you can sell. I was speaking with a client the other day, and they were like, you know, I need an additional sort of income. I said, okay, so what you got in your hands? This is these are the two or three things that you can do. This is where you should start. Yeah. And there were some things that people don't think about, but if you're on the outside looking in, you can help point people to it immediately so that they see it. And that's a part of what my purpose is. That's a part of uh what I'm about, um, to really help people. Not only when I first started 18 years ago, it was just all about, oh, I want my book and I want it to look good or whatever. But now it is to move people to looking at their book even more than just one product. I want you to see multiple products. That's the reason why this season is all about book to business. What ways can that book help you move it to a business? Now, it's still message to the masses, turn your words into wealth, and probably always will be. But three defining core things that I always want your book to do, because that was the first question I asked. What do you want your uh your book to do in short? Some people do say I want it to make me money. Some people do say I only did it because God told me. Number three, I always wanted to see if I could do it, and so I just did it. So, you know, there's various reasons for your why. But these are three things that I really want you to think really fully think about. What is the message? What do you want people to get? What is the message that you want people to get from your book? Write that book now, the urgency of writing your book now rather than later. God in my business, the message is faith, having God a part of all your decision making, a part of your business. Um, my mommy and daddy is an angel, that you can continue to move forward in spite of grief, in spite of loss, but coming from a child's perspective. Um, they're watching over you, they're caring for you. The grief journey for a child is the message. Um, their power in my words, the power of life and death is in the tongue, is what it would be spiritually. But for a child, that could kind of be a little bit overwhelming. But to be able to repeat things that build you up, positive words, have the ability to build you up physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Okay, so there's messages that go along with it. The Women of the Fellowship is a romance fiction series, but my message is romance at any age and any stage. Love at any age and any stage. Okay, that you can still find love when you, you know, miss the famous line from Irma is child who wants me. I need teeth, and I'm old and I'm a grandmother. She figured it out and she found it out. Uh, as a as a sidebar and a sidebar and a and a commercial, you can get your copy of Irma. Book three of the Women of the Fellowship series at Royston Royal Bookstore.com and I digress and I keep moving. But it's the message that you're wanting to get across. Hopefully, your writings do that too as well. When you're writing, I get that. Um, when you're writing, I need to be able to feel the message, get the message. Even if I if you never hear me interview about that book, I need to be able to hear, hear that through your writings. That no matter what your age, whatever your stage, um, there's love. Uh, no matter what's going on, God is still a part of your business. No matter what's going on, uh, building the team, uh, build the dream team. You gotta build it. You know, it's not gonna happen overnight. And these are some of the key building blocks to be able to do that. So, what's the message? So, this is a part of your homework. I got another homework assignment for you, too, but I want you to think about it. What is the true message of your book itself? That helps sell it, that helps figure out for people to figure out where it is because the book, you know, um, you want the book covered to say a thousand words, mean a thousand words, get the message across. Sometimes you have to say it. And then number two, the message is number one. Number two is the method. Are you teaching a way to do something? Are you teaching a way to do something? My nonfiction books that are how to self-help, that's easy. Um, live your best life, 10 ways to live a best life, queen, 21 lessons from Esther, um, 30-day devotionals, 21 devotionals. These are what these are giving you a method of doing it. Um, publish that book now, promote that book now. They're giving you the tools, review um uh is is also giving tools for business owners, step-by-step instructions, one by one, one step at a time to be able to do that. That's the method for doing it. So, number one is the message, and sometimes it's the message that's it. Oh, it's positive. You know, the kids ask me at the school, they come, Miss Julia, are your books so positive? I mean, are they always? Yes, ma'am. I want to insert some positivity into your life. And then number two, the method. How you do something, how it can be done. And even in fiction, you can see characters that do it the right way, and characters that do it the wrong way. Terrence the terrific is is clear for that. He's in middle school, he's uh a little bit older, still the early teen years, striving to make um decisions and some his heart was in the right place, but he didn't ask an adult for the best way to do it. And so, therefore, we get to see the method even in fiction, because we have some deep discussions. What should have happened? He should have asked for his mama, he should have asked the teacher, he should have asked an adult, he should have, they know what to do. So, but it's reiterating and reinforcing that method. So, number one is a message, number two is a method for for designing and associating you with your brand. I'll be back with more. What will you be when you grow up? That's Royston Children Bookstore.com. And we're back. You're listening to the Book Business Mall Show. I'm Dr. Julia Royston, your host. And so we're talking about and getting ready to delve into more about design brand repeat. And um, so we've been talking about what do you want the book to do in short? And then I talked about my first tags, my first logos and first branding, not the picture logo, but the first um brand message that I wanted to associate with BK Royce and publishing from educate, inform, entertain to now it's message to the masses, turn your words into well. And then even further, be a book business boss. Some people are like, oh time, I'm not quite ready for that. Um, but that's what this season is all about book to business. So you can decide. You can decide what level you want to be on, where you want to go. So, number one, we gotta decide what's the message of your book, what's the message, period? What do you want to put out there? What type of branding do you want to put out, and what do you want to associate with your book specifically, even if you're not quite ready for ooh, brand, that word scares me. Well, remember, you're the first brand. Even before you put out a book, even before you showcase anything, you're still the brand. You're the brand ambassador, you're the brand representative, and whoever you are is going to be associated and affiliated with um that idea and with that book, and especially with that book's message. Second was the method, how to? What are what is the methodology? What are you trying to encourage? Are you trying to give it 10 steps um to be prettier and have greater hair? Are you trying to do five steps to have more money and keep more money, save more money, invest more money? What's that what's the what's the part? What's the point? And so therefore, and then number three, to be consistent enough to cause a movement, to be consistent enough to cause a movement. One more time for the Holy Ghost. To be consistent enough to bring about a movement. When I first started in publishing and writing 18 years ago, there were very few of us out there, independent, not associated with a large traditionally published brand. Now we've caused a movement. We've been out there where other people say, I think I could do it. I mean, you know, I could probably uh associate 10 people in literary services that I know that I've either had a conversation with or they've been in a class of mine, or they've been associated with me in some way that I'm sorry to take credit, but I do take uh credit for being an influencer. And I'm super excited for where they started and where they are now. No, it's a wonderful thing. I stand on the sidelines, cheering them on. I really, really do, because I have helped hopefully influence a movement to writing, uh, literary services, publishing, uh writing, coaching, whatever that looks like for you as well. So, what movement would you like to start? It only takes one person, it only takes one person that's consistent in doing that, and saying it, and repeating it, and explaining it, and following it, and getting statistics on it, and yeah. So the three things are message. What's your message? Method. You got something you're teaching people how to do, step-by-step process to do, and through your message in your book, it's gonna um create a uh methodology, a strategy, a way to do something, and then movement. Cause other people to say, Yeah, I'm ready to sign, yeah, I'm ready to register, yeah, I want to do that. Now, one of the key things that has to happen, yes, we have to have our systems in place, all that good stuff. But the next thing is you gotta be willing to talk about it. So the next three things is talk, materials, and systems. Because you can have materials, but you don't talk about it. You can have systems and don't talk about it. Because your materials can be digital, but if you combine all three of them together, that leads to branding. I've had people come up to me and say, you know, oh wow, that's you. They didn't know who I was, didn't know my name, but they had seen that logo somewhere. That BK Royston publishing black, red, and white logo. They had seen it somewhere, and they're like, you know, I've seen, I said, probably online. Yeah, you probably have. Because I put it on everything, everything I do. I say, message to the masters, turn your words into wealth. Yeah, I I I reiterate that. I want you to hear it and and be reminded of it. That's a part of what branding is. It's a stamp, it is a mark, it is a uh a tag of sorts that when you hear it, you recognize and associate it with it. Most people start with the here's my logo, here's my branding, here's my yeah, but you haven't talked about it, you haven't explained it. Yeah, it's a nice picture. Love the logo. Cover is gorgeous, but why do we need it? Why do we have to have it? What is it there for? Now, after I message method movement and mess into the masses, turn your words into wealth, then we went to the next level from author to entrepreneur, book to brand, and beyond. Yeah. Because there are people who are ready to be entrepreneurs. They may work a full-time job, but they're getting close to retirement, or they know they need another source of income. So that entrepreneurial system and journey has to be involved in there too, as well. So that's what my clients have helped keep kicking and screaming, moving me toward. And they asked that. They're asking for that. That's the reason that's how the book business boss came out to be. Um, you know, I had one person who just teased me, girl, there's the book boss. You see all the books on that table. Oh, there's a book box. I was like, book boss. Book business boss. Yeah. And I trademarked it too as well. So some people are not quite ready to, oh, wait a minute, I don't need about that whole boss thing. Not quite ready for that. But that's the next step. That's the whatever that is, you to become a boss of it, to become a leader in it. Whatever your level is, whatever that level is for you, that's what happens. That's what it should look like. That's what it should be like. Okay, so your homework. Let's get down to homework. And okay, I can in the back of my mind, even though I'm a retired teacher, I can still hear the kids going, uh, Miss Wilson, you gonna give us homework? Yep, baby, I'm gonna give you homework. I'm gonna give you homework. So I want you to think about your book and three things that you want your book to do. I want you to determine the message. I want you to determine the method, I want you to determine what could happen and develop into a movement. But I also want you to come with three-word uh tag about you want for you and your book. What are three things? Now, me, I'm kind of one of those people that uh it doesn't have to rhyme, but I do want it to start all with the three M's, the you know, the it should like the educate, inform, e entertain, even though informed starts with an I, it still has that i uh sound. So I want it to kind of flow. That's the reason why children's books rhyme because that helps keep it not only just entertaining, but it kept keeps it in your ears. So I want you to think of three descriptive words for what you want to do, what you want your book to do, and eventually what you want your business to do. I want it to educate you, I want it to inform you, I want to entertain you. I want it to um help you get your message to the master. So that's more what I want my courses to do, help train you and teach you, and then turn your words into wealth so that you can replicate what I taught you so you can make money for yourself. That's the reason why I went from a model where all the books were on my account to now the books are on your account, because the wealth will go directly to you. That's the reason why I'm not a proponent of pointing people to third-party platforms as much as pointing people to your platform, your landing page, your website, your payment link, whatever that looks like, so that the highest profit margin is to you and not to somebody else. So I hope that helps you. Please work on your homework so that, and we'll talk next time, what we're gonna use them three uh points with. How are we gonna how are we gonna turn that into more branding? Because I'm sorry, love, you're not gonna be able to just pay all the money to set up all the systems and you don't talk about it. You don't share it, you don't tell people, you don't have a video, you don't have your audio, something that points people in the direction of the message, the method, and hopefully ignited movement that's going on with you. I'm Dr. Julie Royston. This is the Book Business Boss Show. Until next time, be blessed.
