Rick:

Recently I had the honor of being interviewed by a fellow podcaster in the collision space, cole Strandberg. Cole does the collision vision podcast for auto body news. Earlier this year I had the good fortune of running into this bright young man that was relatively new to the world of podcasting at an industry conference. We connected really well with each other and spent a lot of time talking about podcasting and rapidly changing collision industry and some of the great movers, shakers and industry leaders that we both wanted to interview at some point. Well, I kept running into Cole several times after that at different industry events and we finally decided to do an interview together while we were both at SEMA this year.

Rick:

Welcome to the MindWrench podcast with your host, Rick Selover, where minor adjustments produce major improvements in mindset, personal growth and success. Rick:

Cole does the collision vision podcast for auto body news. Earlier this year I had the good fortune of running into this bright young man that was relatively new to the world of podcasting at an industry conference. We connected really well with each other and spent a lot of time talking about podcasting and rapidly changing collision industry and some of the great movers, shakers and industry leaders that we both wanted to interview at some point. Well, I kept running into Cole several times after that at different industry events and we finally decided to attempt to do an interview together while we were both at SEMA this year. Well, that didn't exactly work out as there was so much going on and we were both extremely busy during those few days that we were there. But we did run into each other several times there and did manage to schedule a time to get together and do our interview when we both got back. So here's that interview that dropped a few weeks ago, with me as Cole's guest on the collision vision podcast for auto body news.

Cole:

Rick, thank you so much for coming on the collision vision.

Rick:

My pleasure, cole. Thanks for having me back, I appreciate it.

Cole:

Looking forward to a great conversation and a tightly one. You can probably hear a little bit in my voice. I am still recovering from SEMA. I know we ran into each other a couple times out there. Want to get into that a little bit. But first, for those not familiar with you or the MindWrench podcast, walk us through your background real quick. Introduce yourself.

Rick:

So thanks again, cole, I appreciate it. I am a about a 45 year industry veteran. Of course, looking at me, you'd never guess I'd been at that long. I still look like a 30 year old, just kidding. True, very true.

Rick:

I started in painting a long time ago, actually had an interest in it when I was about 14 years old. I helped a couple local guys working out of a garage paper off and sand a car that they were painting, and I just kind of got hooked at that point and spent 15 years as a refinish technician really painting everything from I mean I painted metal boxes at a plant to painting a million dollar show cars and restorations and race cars. I even painted an F4 fighter jet that's actually sitting in a static display right here in Michigan. So I sprayed just about everything and I kind of got to the point where I wanted to get into something else, because I looked around at 50, 60, 70 year old painters and I thought, man, that's not going to be me. I got to do something different and got into the sales side of it and I've been in sales for PBE distributors two of the largest in the country over the past 30 some years. So I've really enjoyed that part of it. It allowed me to meet a lot of people, really get entrenched into the business side of this industry, and the podcast came from actually about 2019.

Rick:

I work out a couple times a week at the gym and I do some stuff here at home. But I was at the gym one morning and I got tired of listening to the same old soundtracks of music while I was doing treadmill and decided to play around with some podcasts and I found a podcast that really resonated with me from this guy named Rob Dial. You've probably heard of him. Anyways, during one of his podcasts he had interviewed Dean Graziosi, and Dean Graziosi is a very dynamic guy. Him and Tony Robbins have a partnership and they put on a lot of programs and stuff. Anyway, as soon as the guy said he was from the, he used to own a body shop, he hadn't been hooked right, so I ended up going through a program.

Rick:

I learned you know you can create your own businesses and it was very intriguing to me and one of the things that stuck out was podcasting and I thought you know what? I think I can share some of the stuff I've learned over the past four years via podcast. Seems like a cool way to get a message across. And you know, at the heart of things I really want to help this industry and you know I see where it hurts, I see where the sores are and I'm trying to make them better. So I figured you know sharing some mindset stuff and some collision tweaks and what I think can be done out there was a great option to do so I just kind of launched it and a great great response to it so far it's led to a lot of things. So I'm glad I started when I did.

Rick:

So it's been over three years now I've been doing the podcast.

Cole:

Fantastic and I want to dive further into the podcast and it's a great resource for the industry. I know, I know the effort it takes and I have a feeling this podcast could turn into a collision podcast about collision podcasts.

Rick:

But before we get there, before we get there, we can go on the road for a couple hours Go.

Cole:

Easily easily Before we go down that path. I know you and I bumped into each other a couple different times out in Vegas at SEMA. How was the show for you?

Rick:

The show was awesome. Now my voice is not nearly as bad a shape as some other people that were out there, but I am telling you I talk to a lot of people. I haven't talked that much for three straight days in probably my whole life, right, but it was fun, it was exciting. I was thrilled to see how many people were involved this year, because I went last year. Last year was my first experience with SEMA and it seemed massive and it seemed overwhelming. But this year was definitely next level up, I think, and I saw a lot of key people I wanted to see, met some new people, made some friends, caught up with some old ones, and it's just such an awesome place for anybody in the automotive industry to visit and spend some time in. I mean because you can see everything nuts to bolts in this whole industry, whether it's ceramic coatings or it's a brand new booth setup or the latest technology in ADAS, and it's all there and everybody is accessible. And to me, that's the most exciting thing is, you know, I think back. Okay, if I owned a shop or if I was headed a small MSO or I was just a dealership body shop manager, I'd want to be there, I'd want to see what's going on. I'd want to see the latest and greatest and, more importantly, network with the key people in this industry, because that's probably the greatest resource of that whole program, in my opinion.

Rick:

Have you ever looked in the mirror and said to yourself how come I'm not further along than this? Or why can't I ever seem to get ahead? You're frustrated with life, unsure of your future, wanting to make a change in your current situation, but too scared to make that next move. Maybe you want to reach that next level in life or in your business, but not sure what the right move is. Or maybe you feel the best thing to do is nothing at all.

Rick:

Many of you may not know but, along with hosting my own weekly podcast, I'm a personal development mindset, business and life coach when I focus on helping people with self development mindset and how to make positive changes in their lives. And, trust me, with all the negativity we've had to deal with these past two years, I think we all need some positivity, a positive change and a fresh approach to our life or our business. Sometimes talking to the right person can make all the difference. If you really want to start making those changes in your life. Take action right now. Reach out and email, text, call or direct message me as soon as possible. Do it right now. I'll set you up with a free consultation call and pre qualify you for either the one on one or business coaching that you really need to keep your life or your business on the right track of success. Appointments are available right now.

Cole:

Oh yeah, so much cool stuff to see, but I think you have to nail on the head there is no other time in a given year where so many people from the industry are in one confined spot If you can call a SEMA confined but everybody. It's a massive show, but it seems like wherever you go, you're bumping into friends and meeting new friends and just a great experience. I think we ran into each other at PPG, ran into each other at GarMath. The people you bump into do make it a highlight From an exhibit standpoint, from a product standpoint, new release standpoint. What all were you getting up to? Did you see anything that blew your mind that you're extra excited about?

Rick:

You know I can't nail it down to one or two specific technologies or items or widgets or whatever. I mean, it's great seeing everything that's out there and pretty much everybody's got something that's a newer version or a new release or something that wasn't there last year. But to be quite honest and to be fair to everybody out there, I can't narrow it down to one or two things. Sure, I spent more time in South Hall upper probably than anywhere else, but here's what I did see is I spent some time in I think it was West, west and North Halls had a lot of new products out there and a lot of accessories and ceramic coatings and windshield treatments and truck bedlining and all those other little add-on what I call add-on businesses. How much of that there was.

Rick:

I mean it's overwhelming to see how many of those little businesses they are. And once again I'm looking through the eyes of, maybe, a collision owner going man, oh man, maybe I could add that. You know, instead of worrying about doing a detail, maybe I could add that ceramic coating thing, maybe I could add that liner system or that those snap-on accessories that go on the trim. There's so much cool stuff, cole, that just to me that's really exciting.

Rick:

Maybe I'm a freak, I don't know, but I look through that stuff as a business owner would and should and think, man, the shops that are doing great, fantastic, but why not have extra revenue streams within your business? So that's kind of how I looked at them, absolutely yeah.

Cole:

The innovation happening in and around collision repair is unlike anything I've ever seen before and I think every SEMA to me. It's just getting more and more positive about the future of the industry, from a technology perspective, training perspective, personnel perspective, and this year was no exception. I think some crazy, crazy cool stuff happening. The investment in R&D and new products is full speed ahead, and I think that's only great things for the industry, absolutely.

Rick:

Keep in mind, cole, I came through you know a long history of the collision shop where it was stagnant for decades and really didn't move and you know there was nothing exciting about it, nothing new. You know, coming down the road it was very, I don't know, it was very standard, very normal for a lot of years, with nothing to really get super excited about. Now, just in the past, you know five years, it's been crazy with the growth and the expansion and things like ADAS and EVs and, you know, ai technology getting involved in this business. So it is very, to me, it's very exciting for this industry.

Cole:

Absolutely. My first SEMA was 2015. I've not missed one since, with the exception of 2020 when they didn't have it, and it felt like in 2015 there was a little bit of doom and gloom about the industry and about all this self-driving technology and all that stuff and, as we've seen that progress and get a better understanding, it feels like collision repair has a firm as old as ever from a staying power perspective, which is always great news, but awesome stuff. It was great seeing you out at SEMA.

Cole:

I want to pay a shout out to talking about some of our podcasts and favorite things that you've been up to. I know one of my favorite parts personally of hosting the Collision Vision is talking with so many incredible figures inside and outside the industry who have one thing in common I feel like they're all smarter than I am.

Rick:

And I leave every conversation exactly.

Cole:

I leave every conversation better for it, and all with a different perspective and a unique perspective based on who I'm talking with. Are there any topics that you've spoken on over the years that come to mind as just firming up your opinion or changing your opinion or getting you excited, and that jumps out to you as some of your most prolific realizations from your experience podcasting?

Rick:

Great question, cole. I'll preface this with this. So when I first started podcasting, I had no concept or idea of interviewing other people in this industry. I thought, well, I'm just going to use my history in this business and what I see is things that we can improve on, or little mindset shifts we can do, and attitude changes and things I'm just going to talk about those. Right, I got about I don't know 16, 17, 20 episodes through. I thought you know I probably really should talk to somebody in this house and this business. Let's see how that goes.

Rick:

And I interviewed a couple of people that I wanted to and it just started me down that road of going oh man, there's so much extra value to me having somebody on here that's really killing it in his little or her little sector of this business. So I started doing some episodes and it's definitely a lot more work. It's a lot more planning. You've got to get schedules together and all that stuff, but the payoff is definitely worth it. And starting this podcast it's just introduced me to a whole new level and a whole new world of people within this industry that I didn't know exist. You know you talk about Mike Anderson. Everybody knows who Mike Anderson is that even walks into a body shop, right. But you know the guys, like you know Frank Turlup, dave Lure, some of these other people within the industry that not everybody knows who they are, or the Rachel James or Mickey Woods, or you know some of the other people that support this industry in a lot of different ways. It introduced me to a lot of them and everyone I got introduced to opened me up to other ones. So it's been a great part of this career in podcasting is to your point is you get to talk to these people that are at the top of the game, that are influencers that make a difference, that make change in this industry, and I'm never the smartest person in the room. I don't ever want to be the smartest person in the room, because if you are, you need to find a bigger room or a different room, right? So, yeah, I picked up something from so many of these.

Rick:

It was hard to narrow it down, but I'll give you a couple that really stood out to me and really impacted me. I guess Probably my number one was. You know, everybody's hero in this business is Mr Mike Anderson from Collision Advice, and I actually had him on for my 100th episode, which you know in podcasting, if you get to 50 or 100 or 200 or 1000, those are big milestones in this industry. So I want to do something special. Yeah, I want to do something special on my 100th. So I arranged to talk with Mike and I've run into Mike, you know, dozens of times over the years and we're friends. But his depth of knowledge, his persona when he's speaking is so different than when you meet the guy at a show or, you know, after the presentation or just somewhere. He's so humble, such a quiet, such a reserved guy.

Rick:

But the guy is a lion when you put him on stage and he's got massive passion, massive knowledge and he made a massive impact on me just from a personal level that I was able little old me was able to talk to a guy like that an interview and I got great compliments after the interview. So that was really, really cool.

Cole:

He is one that, for as big a deal as he is and as engaging as he is when he's talking with you one on one, he has the ability to just make you feel like you're the only person that matters, and I think in podcast form that resonates to the listener as well. I mean, you get unfiltered access to Mike Anderson for 30 plus minutes. It's very cool.

Rick:

Yeah, I know you got to experience that as well.

Cole:

It is very cool so.

Rick:

So Mike was probably my number one, most memorable and most impactful. But number two I would say would be Dave Lure. I know you've interviewed Dave as well, so I became friends with him. I was actually afraid of what he did was something I was trying to do at the time was be a source of coaching and consulting for collision business owners, and he was already there and already doing well with it, and at first I looked at him like a competitor. But once I got to talk to him, got to know him. He's such a great guy. We became fast friends.

Rick:

I interviewed him, actually did two podcasts with him, and he introduced me to the concept A live version of the concept of what a mastermind is. Now I knew what a mastermind was, but I've never actually been part of wonder been invited to one. So last year he had his first mastermind event with his group, invited me down there and it was such a cool experience. He actually invited me down this year and I actually presented a presentation on mindset shift and it went over really well. It was such you know he's, I don't know. Just getting introduced to certain people opens up a whole other part of your world. You know what I mean, and Dave did that for me and we're, like I said, we're very good friends and that one was really an impactful meeting for me just to get to know him and do that interview.

Cole:

So another, another great figure, and so charismatic, so knowledgeable, and the two you've mentioned, they just, they're part of a group who are rowing the boat in the same direction, right? Yes, and you mentioned the the idea of certain competitors in industries, and there's some validity there. But the truth is, in this industry, as long as your competition is trying to better the industry, what a, what a great thing. Let me throw you a little a little curveball here.

Cole:

yeah, with my next question it's along the same lines, but have you had any conversations in In your podcasting career that have challenged your perspective on things or that have changed your mind on Things or have really cemented, maybe, an opinion you weren't fully in on?

Rick:

well, much like you, you, you talk with Frank Turlop and did a Interview with him. I've been talking with Frank for the past couple years. I've seen him at so many different Events. I've gone to see, I see and spent time with him there and Dave's Meeting sees been down there as well. So I've seen Frank plenty of times and we keep talking about when we're gonna do our podcast together. He's a tough guy to nail down because he's got so many commitments with all the things he's doing. But the whole aid asks.

Rick:

You know, up until the time that I met him and heard it for his first presentation, I really didn't understand how big of a deal a dash was. I really didn't think that much about it. Right, because I'm not in a shop every day fixing cars. I For a vendor standpoint, I'm seeing owners, I'm seeing shops and I know the things you have to go through. But he really cemented in my mind that that is a must today in collision is to be addressing it and and what a deficit there is between the shops that are out there and the shops that are doing it. That challenged or changed my thoughts a little bit.

Rick:

But also Ryan Taylor from body shop booster I really didn't think that much about CSR. I thought, well, you train somebody to be in your front office that can answer the phone nicely, not be, you know, not sound like they're having a bad day, treat the customer okay and that's really all you need. But you know, through some of the stuff I've learned with Ryan is that's a whole nother the level that can dictate which way your business is going to go. So I don't know if you've seen that by shop booster or talk with Ryan Taylor, I'm sure you have, but that whole.

Rick:

CSR program is just. It's completely unbelievable what it can do for a shop, oh yeah yeah, no, that's.

Cole:

That's great stuff and kind of brings me back to a Mike Anderson concept. These days where collision repair we're no longer competing against the shop down the road, we're competing against grade a service organizations, both for kind of the customer service piece as well as talent Attraction and I think both of those kind of hit the nail on the head where we're continuously innovating, we're continually getting better, and Could not agree more. It just kind of nails down, solidifies an opinion and and Frank, it has that effect as well on the on the ados side now.

Rick:

Yeah, and that and that stuff is what kind of drives me coal is is.

Rick:

I know that there's such a huge percentage of the collision shops that are out there that are either not aware of this stuff. They, they, they're, you know, vaguely aware of it, but they're not engaged in it and they may not realize the importance of Correctively repairing vehicles back to OEM standards. And I'm trying to help, really in my own little way, drive that message when I talk to these people and I share what I've learned To me. That's, you know, I'm, I want to be of value, I want to be of service to this industry and whatever level I can. So that's what kind of drives me to do what I'm doing, because I know those messages are being missed by tens of thousands of shops. Yeah, so, yeah, well, no, no, I appreciate, appreciate what you do and there's, you know, there's a few really good podcasts out there for collision and you guys aren't, you know, nobody's competition. We're all, I think, like I said, roll in the boat in the same direction, trying to provide Some insights and value in whatever format we can to help shops.

Cole:

That's it. And and yet each and every one I think of the the good shows out there have made a positive impact. Certainly present company included, but Kind of switching gears a little bit, and we've touched on this You've obviously made an impact on your listeners and your, your guests. How has doing this impacted you, both personally and professionally?

Rick:

Oh, you got another hour. It's. It's been Extremely impactful for me personally. It's kind of changed the whole direction of my thinking on being more of service to this industry and Knowing that I can make an impact and wanting to do more and more of that. It gives you fulfillment, right. So everybody can go to work, do their job, run their business, whatever they're doing. But if you do not have fulfillment, you really it doesn't matter how successful we are, you're still kind of failing, right. So at the end of the day, when you're done, you can look at yourself from here. Go, man, I did my best today. I I believe I made a difference. If I helped one person call, then my day was was a smashing success, right. So that's really how its impact is me. It's kind of awakened me to what I'm capable of doing and you know, and to keep on doing it and to keep working harder to make a bigger impact. And that's really affecting me both personally and professionally, because it it resonates throughout everything I do and I'm really really thankful for it.

Rick:

I believe that life kind of, will throw you some curves and lead you in a certain direction. It's kind of up to you to Take hold that direction and find out why You're, why you're going that path, why you're going down that road. Because obviously there's a reason and I believe that you know the original podcast I listened to in 2019 has kind of helped, directed me to sitting right now with you talking about this on your podcast. So, follow your dreams, follow, follow your gut instincts to do something. If you it means make a change in what you're doing, then make the change. It means lose it, lose a person that you spend too much time with. It doesn't help you, then lose that person. Make the change, make the difference. Follow your. I think your heart and your gut and have your instincts are there for a reason. I really believe that.

Cole:

Absolutely. And just to put a fine point on it, I know we've talked a lot about the mind wrench podcast, but how would you describe it to folks who haven't listened just yet? Well, how do you describe your show?

Rick:

It's not to be missed.

Cole:

Changing life, changing life all three.

Rick:

I guess I described it as a great blend of personal development, self-improvement, mindset shifting concepts and ideas that Realistically work and have been proven out by you know, many people over decades, mixed with specific auto repair, collision repair tactics and tweaks and adjustments and and Technology that's emerging. So it's a blend of of a tactical and a blend of, I guess, the psychological, all Packaged into, you know, anywhere from 12 to 25 minutes and it's easy to listen to. I've had great reviews on it. I think what I've done I didn't expect to have the impact that it does.

Rick:

But and I'm not for everybody right, because some people just want straight facts, they want the straight scoop, they want to get on with their life and some people enjoy thinking a little deeper on. You know, maybe I do have some issues I need to get past. Maybe maybe I should treat my employees a little different or my customers a little different, or Maybe I should understand my numbers and really decide if I'm having the success it feels like I'm having right. So I try to intertwine all that stuff as much as possible and it's got a lot of room to go in different directions if I need it to. So right now that's kind of what I'm doing.

Cole:

Awesome. Well, you have a great review from me here. I do recommend folks who enjoy the collision vision go ahead and add my the mind wrench podcast to the rotation For some some really good collision content and beyond, and I'll give you a chance to kind of float some Ways for folks to follow along with you and listen to the podcast. But first, before we wrap up, as you know, we like to end each episode of the collision vision with three key takeaways In your mind. What are those three key takeaways from our conversation today?

Rick:

I 'd say Number one probably be part of the solution, not part of the problem. So serve the industry at whatever level you can, and whether that's through a podcast, whether that's through Reaching out to another shop in your market and inform a connection with them and shares my ideas, you know, maybe it's making things the easier on your vendors that you deal with and ask for information and Inform. Better relationships with them could, because it'll it'll be to your advantage at some point. But, like I said, be part of the solution. There's too many people that are part of the problem right now. So I know it sounds broad, but really that is kind of how it is.

Rick:

Number two learn from people around you. Surround yourself With people that know more than you do, no matter what you're doing, even if you're not in this industry, if you're something else of it, doesn't matter. You can't learn, you can't grow Unless you surround yourself with a better group of people. Like I said earlier, if you're the smartest person in the room, you need to find another room, because you're not gonna learn anything, you're not gonna grow, and I believe we're kind of all here to grow and then probably you know we didn't talk about this before.

Rick:

But I'd say, be aware that your mindset, which is under your 100% control, your mindset will dictate your journey, your success and your enjoyment in life. So give that some serious thought, because I see a lot of people, especially in this industry, that are miserable 24-7. Every time I talk to them it's like, oh man, this is horrible, this is, this is going wrong. I can't believe this happened. And all that stuff can be changed by you at any point. It just takes a little guidance and talking to somebody that knows how to do that. So really that's about the probably the best three things I could leave people with man, it's a great list right there.

Cole:

I'm fired up about that and I think we could have a whole episode on on each of those points alone. But really good stuff and a great taste of MindWrench podcast and what you talk about and, on that note, where can people follow along with you and your journey and where can people listen to the mind wrench podcast?

Rick:

so you can pretty much find me anywhere on Facebook, linkedin, instagram probably the easy, and I'll leave this for you to put in the show notes. But I've got a there's this thing called link tree, which is a neat little app that you can load all your Places people can find you at, so all someone has to do is go to it's link. So LIs, link TREE, trash, mind wrench, and that's got all my contact stuff in there. Right there I've got a Facebook group. I'm part of collision cocktail hour. We didn't even talk about that. We'll talk about that next time, but I'm out there. I'm easy to find. You go to rickselovercom. You can contact me through there, so, but I'll give you.

Rick:

I'll give you a couple, a couple ideas that you can put down in the show notes.

Cole:

So perfect yet. We are happy to do it. But, rick, thank you so much for a coming on the collision vision and be more importantly, for everything you do for the industry.

Rick:
