Episode Notes:

Has that New-Year, New-You lie let you down in the past?

Do you usually find yourself fizzling out on your New Year's resolutions faster than a cheap sparkler on the Fourth of July? No judgment here—a staggering 80% of resolutions are in the same boat, but I’ve got a life-raft of strategies to keep your goals afloat all year long. In the newest MindWrench podcast episode, I’ll unleash the top 10 reasons why we often see our aspirations sink and how to turn that ship around. With a blend of personal stories of my own goals that have capsized in the past, I'm laying out a blueprint that will help keep your 2024 ambitions afloat.

Strap in for this episode as I break down how setting Mount Everest-size goals without a sherpa can lead to an avalanche of disappointment, and why being as vague as a politician's promises won't get you to the finish line. You'll learn why a lack of planning is like setting sail without a compass and how flying solo without an accountability copilot might see your resolutions crash and burn before spring even blooms.

So, if you're ready to transform your yearly pledges to true transformation, from fizzling fireworks to powerful progress, drop the same old New Years resolutions, and join me in starting the New Year's revolution with your goals steering steady and strong towards some real results!

Speaker 1:

Welcome to 2024. Another brand new year and, once again, time to take another fresh look at our lives and make some needed changes, or at least that's how we usually start the year. Right as we look at our businesses, our bellies and our bank accounts, there are so many things that could be, maybe should be, in better shape. Would you agree, so, to start off 2024 on the right foot? I thought I'd share some of the reasons we tend to fall short of experience, the thrill of victory, and end up with the agony of defeat when it comes to our goals.

Speaker 2:

Welcome to the MindWrench podcast with your host, Rick Selover, where minor adjustments produce major improvements in mindset, personal growth and success. This is the place to be every Monday, where we make small improvements and take positive actions in our business and personal lives that will make a major impact in our success. Next level growth and quality of life.

Speaker 1:

Welcome to 2024. Another brand new year and once again, time to take another fresh look at our lives and make some needed changes in our business and personal growth and success. Welcome to 2024. Welcome to 2024. Welcome to 2024. Welcome to 2024. Welcome to 2024. Welcome to 2024. Welcome to 2024. Welcome to 2024. Another brand new year and once again, time to take another fresh look at our lives and make some needed changes, or at least that's how we usually start the year.

Speaker 1:

Right, as we look at our businesses, our bellies and our bank accounts, there are so many things that could be, maybe should be, in better shape. Would you agree? Loose some weight, tone up some muscles, quit an unhealthy habit, make some better investment choices or just start investing. Expand our business, maybe buy another location, do an addition or add some additional services, maybe open a calibration center, or maybe just break away and start your own business. Who knows? So many choices, so many things that need attention, so many opportunities for improvement, just like last year, and unfortunately, so many opportunities to fail, fail miserably, to the tune of about 80% of New Year's resolutions fail to happen. Listen, don't beat yourself up.

Speaker 1:

Most of us do the exact same thing. We start off great, with big intentions and lots of enthusiasm, but slowly slip off the path and we start slacking off on the new patterns we're trying to form and we let life get in the way and next thing you know it's April and we're right back where we were at the end of the previous December. Sound familiar? I've faithfully belonged to a gym for over 20 years and I see the same thing every new year. The gym gets a big influx of eager and inspired New Year's resolutioners, but by mid-February those numbers start dropping and, you know, by the end of March only one or two people actually stick to their new routine. Full transparency here.

Speaker 1:

I've tried and failed many times at resolutions in certain areas of my life. I'm no different than the majority out there. But I have learned from my failures along the way and now I've greatly increased my chances for success from those lessons learned. So to start off 2024 on the right foot, I thought I'd share some of the reasons. We tend to fall short of experience, the thrill of victory, and end up with the agony of defeat when it comes to our goals. So, in no particular order, here are my top 10 reasons for stopping short of your goals.

Speaker 1:

Number one unrealistic goals. Setting overly ambitious or unrealistic goals can set you up for failure. When goals are too difficult or unattainable, people may become discouraged and give up. Number two not being specific enough. Vague resolutions, such as lose weight or get in shape, lack specifics. Without clear and measurable objectives, it's challenging to track progress and stay motivated.

Speaker 1:

Number three lack of planning. Many individuals fail to create a solid plan for achieving their resolutions. Without a clear roadmap, it's easy to get lost or overwhelmed, leading to people just giving up on the resolutions altogether. Number four poor accountability. This one's important. Not having a support system or accountability partner can make it easier to abandon those resolutions. Sharing your goals with someone and having regular check-ins can help keep you on track and increase your chances of success.

Speaker 1:

Number five in patience and boy do I see a lot of this. People often expect immediate results and when they don't see a rapid progress, they may become disheartened, disengaged, disappointed and abandon their resolutions. Number six all or nothing mentality. Some individuals adopt an all or nothing mentality, believing that if they deviate from their plan even slightly, then they have failed completely. This perfectionist mindset can lead to you giving up entirely way too early. Sound like anybody you know. Sound like maybe you.

Speaker 1:

Number seven lack of interest motivation. Resolutions driven by external pressures or societal expectations rather than the personal desires are less likely to succeed. It's important to choose goals that align with your values and your passions. You are not here to live up to the expectations of others. Number eight failure to learn from setbacks. Listen, setbacks are just a normal part of any journey, but some people struggle to bounce back from them. Instead of viewing setbacks as opportunities to learn and adjust, they see them as reasons to give up. I say fail forward, keep going. Pain is part of the process and part of growth. Number nine overlooking the emotional component. Behavioral change often involves emotional aspects. If individuals don't address the emotional triggers and barriers associated with their resolutions, they may find it really difficult to sustain those changes. Don't let your own emotional issues trip you up.

Speaker 1:

Number 10, too many resolutions. Trying to tackle too many resolutions at once can be overwhelming. Focusing in on just a few key goals allows for better concentration and increases the likelihood of success. Start with the ones that will make the largest impact for you. To increase your chances of success, it's important to set realistic, specific and measurable goals, create a detailed plan, enlist support from friends, family or coach and stay flexible in adapting to challenges along the way. Regular reflection and adjustment can help maintain motivation and increase the likelihood of achieving new year's resolutions. Nope, sorry, make that 20-24 goals. If you're looking for a competitive edge for your business or a more effective jumpstart to your personal development in 2024, I'll make your first step super simple.

Speaker 1:

It is a fact that an incredible number of the most successful business owners, nearly half of the Fortune 500 companies, top-running professional athletes, entertainers and industry leaders like Microsoft's Bill Gates, former President Bill Clinton, richard Branson, amazon's Jeff Bezos and Salesforce's Mark Benioff all have one thing in common they all have at least one coach and some have several that they work with on a consistent basis, someone that helps guide, mentor and support them, challenge them, help them set and achieve goals that move them forward and then hold them accountable to follow through, driving personal and professional growth. Working with a coach has many substantial benefits. Just for an example, 80% of coaching clients report improved self-esteem or self-confidence thanks to coaching, 99% of individuals and companies at higher coach report being very satisfied and 96% would do it again. If, deep down, you know it's time to make those improvements in your business, your personal life, that you've kicked down the road year after year, if you're tired of knowing there's a better version of you waiting to shine, but unsure of how to bring that version to light. If you're tired of wanting to enjoy a more successful business but not sure how to start, and if you don't want to go another 12 months without better results but you don't want to go it alone, then take the first step. It's super simple. Sometimes talking to the right person can make all the difference. Go to wwwricksellovercom, slash contact and I'll set you up with a free consultation. Call with me to see if one-on-one coaching is right for you. Okay, now that you have a better understanding of what trips us up and prevents us from hitting those goals and stops us from becoming the better version of ourselves we truly desire, the versions we are certain we can be, I thought I would share a few tips on how to increase your chance of success on that journey. Here are six simple tips to help you achieve that better version of you that the rest of the world deserves in 2024.

Speaker 1:

Number one no New Year's resolutions. Avoid making New Year's resolutions. They almost never work, nobody sticks to them and they end up being next year's resolutions. Also, avoid the latest fad diets to get yourself in shape. I mean, how many people do you know started a vegan or South Beach or Keto or Mediterranean diet within the past couple years? Initially lost a few pounds, but are right back where they started now, maybe even heavier right? Make a personal commitment to a healthier version of you. Combine both diet and exercise, as neither one works successfully without the other.

Speaker 1:

Number two no B-hags. Choose small to medium goals that you wish to obtain from each sector of your life that needs a little help. No B-hags, that's big, hairy, audacious goals. Those take massive commitment and usually lead to big let downs when not achieved. Small wins produce confidence, which will lead to bigger wins.

Speaker 1:

Gain small improvements in the areas that matter Personal health and fitness, mental health and well-being, financial health and your business's health. My advice to you is to always work on improving your personal health and fitness first, as that will dictate your success in the other areas of your life. A strong mind and body will help you be more successful in destroying your other goals. Number three put it on paper. Write it down. Whatever goals or life changes you wish to implement, put it down on paper. Leave multiple reminders where you might see them, like on the refrigerator, the bathroom mirror, the dashboard of your car or your computer screen, or even on your lock screen on your phone Number.

Speaker 1:

Four be selfish. Make sure you're doing it for you and no one else. Now, while it's a nice thought to lose weight so you'll be around for your kids years down the road, or to be supportive to your spouse while they're on health change. But your best success is whatever goal you're looking to achieve. It's to do it because it's important to improve your life. A better version of you. A better version of you is more able to help and support those around you.

Speaker 1:

Number five be accountable. Get an accountability partner, whether it's a family member, friend or, better yet, a coach. Have someone holding you accountable to the changes you have committed to and help push you when it's needed. Now. A coach doesn't have the personal relationship a family member does, and they'll probably not let you slide week after week. They'll probably be more driven to hold you accountable to your goals.

Speaker 1:

And number six avoid mainstream media. Go on a news diet for a whole year if you can. I've said it many times before and I'll say it again Watching the mainstream media is the worst thing you can do to yourself. The media's goal is to keep you scared, fearful, unsure of their future and glued to their channel to see what may happen next. They spin events and things people say to their particular agendas, hopefully altering how you think and respond. They thrive on division of the public and love to pit sides against each other, and I'm sure I don't need to remind you, but this is going to be an election year, so the negative rhetoric spilling out of your TV set will be an absolute shit show overdrive. All right, I'll get off my soapbox about the news, but seriously, I avoid the news like the plague as much as possible. I get the weather forecasts, sports updates, road conditions and all that other stuff from my phone any time I want during the day, without the daily doom and gloom, and so can you.

Speaker 1:

Okay, now you have a good idea and several reasons why most people quit before their goals are reached, and I've shared with you some solid tips on how to increase your chances for successful outcomes while reaching for a better version of you. Now all you need to do is take action. That's it. Don't be half-hearted about your intentions. Mentally, emotionally and physically. Commit to going after those goals. There is no plan B. Also, don't be half-assed in your efforts towards those goals, especially when it comes to sticking to any new way of eating healthier or a new workout routine. Put your whole ass into it. Do what it takes to achieve those goals.

Speaker 1:

Becoming a better version of yourself has many long-lasting benefits you can't even measure yet. Will there be some pain? Of course there will be, but you know what they say, right, as one of my favorite digital mentors, jim Rohn, once quoted, we must all suffer from one of the two pains the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. Which one do you want to choose? All right, I need to get moving on one of my new goals for this year making a positive impact in our industry whenever I can and wherever I can. Oh wait, that's the same goal I had last year. Oh well, nobody says you can't repeat the goals, especially when they're awesome goals, right? Well, cheers to you and the new version of you yet to come. I wish you a super successful New Year. Well, that's all I had for you today. Thanks again for tuning in. I really appreciate your support and I hope you have a great week.
