Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Look, we're gonna take a quick pit stop before we actually go um and finish up our um the remaining questions. Okay, and we're gonna invite you guys to play a game with us that we well it's not really a game, but um you guys will know this, but it we call it our conversation starters. We got it from the marriage um seminar that we went to at Palm Desert with you guys. It's 88 questions that are conversation starters. We never read the questions before, so we as we hear the questions, we answer the questions, we invite you guys to um answer them as well, and uh we'll see what what what it says.
SPEAKER_01All right, and guys, as always, we always tell you guys you can get it on Amazon. I think it's like nine bucks, and it's an amazing thing to do in your marriage if you'd like to uh start conversations that you usually don't have.
SPEAKER_03So if they if they go on Amazon and get it, you think they'll still listen to us when it comes to it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think they would. I do, I believe that.
SPEAKER_03They want to hear what we have to say, huh?
SPEAKER_01Maybe all right, so I think we were on number eight. Oh. Oh it says, How do you imagine our life together in ten years? Wait, there's a quote. You know there's always a quote. Staying married is not mainly about staying in love, it is about keeping the covenant. That's from John Piper. Okay. How do you imagine our life together in ten years?
SPEAKER_03This is what I do know. If yours has anything to do with Disney World, the closet is yours.
SPEAKER_01We would have been there by now. We would have been there and done that.
SPEAKER_03You know, those are questions that are those are questions are kind of hard because we don't know the future, at least for me, they are. So I would say what I would like to see in 10 years, um I would like to see us doing a lot more with VIP. Possibly on a radio show, someone if you're out there listening. Um doing this still, um, growing, going to churches and um, you know, conferences, marriage conferences. Uh we've we've gone to a couple of cool ones. I was like, man, how to be good to be up there sharing, sharing what God has given us, you know, with this heart of marriage that and you know, the passion that God has given us. I would really like to see us continuing to grow in our ministry. And I'm not just saying this because they're um here, but um just continuing to grow with this couple in ministry. Um God has in this um juncture of my life, right? Um I'm seeing God raise me up um you know in the ministry, right? And God is using this I can I I can honestly say God is using this couple to help take us to the next level of what it truly means to serve him. He is on YouTube because of them. Right. They played a major, major role in this. Absolutely. And um, I just want to just continue growing in in in those areas. I hope to see us doing that together.
SPEAKER_01You still have my answer.
SPEAKER_03Well, well, we're one. What he said.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Okay, so y'all I I I I can't I can't top that. I would just be repeating what you said because when I read the question, I was like, VIP, you I could add, um, you know, I told you about my vision, how I saw us at a a big conference. What's that conference? The Harvest Crusade doing our t-shirts. I I I I saw that, you know, so I would hope that would happen, you know, if it was the will of the father to uh within those 10 years. But everything else you said is is what I would have said.
SPEAKER_03We we really, everybody on uh ours and uh the Buffingtons as well, we really want to see marriages healed, yeah, grow. Um just um this just the culture of marriage, you know, get renewed. You know, our our our slogan is we want to see marriage a sexy concept of this is the guy who gave us that corner market, right? That that we'll get to that how yeah, okay, we'll get to that. I'm I'm jumping the gun. So those are some things for us. What about you guys? You need the question again? No, no, I got it in 10 years.
SPEAKER_00Coming from the family side, I want to see more grandkids. These we have these young adults right now.
SPEAKER_04We married off two daughters last year, but we're waiting on, we're waiting on grandkids to be followed. Okay. Bring them to granddaddy, man. I'm I'm ready, we're ready for that, you know.
SPEAKER_03Absolutely. Did you guys hear that, Buffington Kids?
SPEAKER_00Bring it, bring it. Yeah, ministry-wise, ministry is real sweet right now.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I think um I love where we're at. I do still, I do have vision for, you know, along with the a bigger building, uh, I do I do have vision for us to have a school, Cavert Chapel Inglewood, Christian school. So um, you know, though those are things that in the next 10 years, I would, I would love to see the Lord is the Lord say the same uh on some of those things. So um a lot, you know, really more of what we have, you know. I I love what we have now. As the kids are all older, they're all adults now. Uh we her and I have been enjoying the freedom of dipping out a lot more. And love that I can I can I can come home and just be like pack a bag. We out for the couple of days. Uh so though those I I am enjoying that. Um and then they're not at the house. So we you know I can we don't got to get a room. We hear you. I meet you in the living room at 11. Yeah, so uh it's it's it's been a it's it's it's I'm enjoying this season, and uh I'm just looking forward to more, more, more, more of what God is doing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's awesome. That's awesome. Um, here's a question for you Differences of opinions and conflict do and will arise in marriage. What is work for you guys in working through those?
SPEAKER_04So something that we do, and I really, really believe it's a it's a helpful tool. Um, my wife and I, uh for you guys know us, we're both we're both leaders. You know, we're both my wife is uh she's a very she's a strong-minded, opinionated uh woman and uh all the net goals and all of that. So there are certainly times when you know we come to the table and we're like, we ain't seeing it the same way. You know, we we got a difference of opinion on something, and ultimately she will submit. But uh here's here's in in all reality, because uh we can both be wrong at times, and there are times that we come to the table, there's disagreement. And if I can't say this is the Lord, um, then what we will often do is say, look, let's let's take this issue and shelf it. If we don't need an answer today, let's don't let's don't funk up the air today about this. Sit it up, sit it aside, you pray for take the next five. We will set a date. We'll say, hey, until Sunday, you pray about it, I'm gonna pray about it. We're not gonna discuss it with each other or anybody else. You pray, you journal with the Lord, speaks to you about it. I'm gonna do the same. We will come back together Sunday, and Sunday we will share not what we feel or what we think, but what God, what has God spoken to you over the last five days? Praying about this. And without fail, when we both do that, God always puts us on the same sheet because He is not the author of confusion. So that has been one of the ways when something really of something big, you know, that we were, we know we we need to be on one accord. I found that that's been a real faithful way to come into unity without a fight, without an argument, without without us being at each other's neck, because it's not really her against me. We both are trying to figure out what God wants.
SPEAKER_01Awesome.
SPEAKER_03So yeah, awesome. That's awesome. I'm just chewing on that one for a second. Okay, I almost don't want to move on. Boy, that was good. That was all right.
SPEAKER_01Number five. All right. What is intimacy and how important is it in a marriage? Not just physical. When you know I see him fixing his glasses, he rubbing his hands. Like, what is no what is intimacy and and how what how do you feel it's important to a marriage?
SPEAKER_04You're me. Okay. So, I mean, obviously, I before I jump on the physical part of intimacy, intimacy really to me, it is the sense that like I know her, she knows me, right? No, nobody knows me as well as she does. I've I've I've let her in. Um, intimacy is, you know, when she asks me, hey, what's going on? I tell her. I'm not keeping her on the outside of what's happening the most, what I'm feeling, what I'm thinking. Nothing. That's intimacy. I'm I'm you are in here with me. You know, I feel this way, and I'm telling you. I may not tell everybody, but you, we share an intimacy that I don't share with everybody else. So you get it raw, you get it real. Um, that's part of intimacy that there's there's there's no walls, there's nothing hidden, there's nothing kept back. Uh, and then that that transp you know that that goes with all the rest of the relationship is nothing's hidden in terms of you know what's in my mind, what's in my heart. But also, you know, intimacy is physical, and so there are times where nothing is hidden between what we can see. Let me see it all. Uh there's a physical part of intimacy as well. And um, I do think that intimacy is really an important part of a healthy marriage that people feel connected. Yeah, and so the I think there's the one part of intimacy, the conversational life sharing, where we're connected and we feel connected in that way. Our hearts are connected, our lives are connected, and um I think you know, overflow of that is as the physical aspect of intimacy, which you know we we're also sharing in that together.
SPEAKER_00So and I don't think if you can truly have the physical intimacy without the other intimacy.
SPEAKER_03Boy, absolutely drop the mic right there. Okay, cool.
SPEAKER_04Um, ministry can you want to know what you want to know any secrets right now? I'll tell you anything.
SPEAKER_01Watch out, watch out.
SPEAKER_03Ministry can be a full. I want to bring her in close today. Hey, hey, hey, bro, I can't tell you how many times I'm like, you know, we can turn off these lights up in here, you know. We can we can stop this interview short, you know. Please, man, please. Please, sir. Ministry can be a full-time job. How have you maintained a balance between family, married life, and ministry?
SPEAKER_00I think understanding that family is ministry, yeah. Um, that ministry doesn't only happen at church, and that also family or you know, your spouse is your first ministry as well, um, helps to keep things in perspective.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I think for me, um, I I gained a perspective early on. I did see guys that were so like gung-ho for the ministry that like wife and kids were not, they were they were like second tier. And um, and I know that that wasn't right, you know. So for me, it was always this was I don't know who told me this, but um it's been locked in my head for years is that anybody else, like what whatever ministry thing I'm doing, I'm preaching on Sunday or I'm doing by somebody else could do that, and it would be okay. Only I could be her husband, and only I could be my kid's dad. And so there are moments in time when I could let someone else do the other stuff because it'll be fine without me, right? But this won't be fine without me. And so um, I gotta make my wife a priority and my kids a prior priority. So my kids don't grow, my kids didn't grow up resenting the ministry because they were always a priority. Yeah, I'm gonna be at your games, I'm gonna be at practice, I'm gonna have time to be with you. This isn't so important that I don't have time for you guys. And so I think keeping that balance so that I can enjoy my wife, enjoy my kids. And like my wife said, this is a ministry too. This is my first ministry. And so, ministry at church, it should be from the overflow of this ministry. Yeah, so it's not that I deplete my wife and deplete my kids and give myself to the church. I give myself in ministry to my wife, I give myself ministry to my kids, and then of the overflow, I'll spill over at church and hopefully I can be a blessing to somebody there too. But you know, at the church, somebody else could take over and lead it. Yeah, this I'm husband. Yeah, nobody else is taking. Um we say ain't nobody else taking over this rock earth. I'm gonna be here, you know. So I think that perspective has helped keep balance when, you know, man, it's a lot of calls, a lot of opportunities, a lot of things. Um, you know, I always I come in, I say, hey, uh, I I every time I get a text message or a phone call saying, hey, we want to invite you to do something. I always run it over here. We run it through our calendar. And if we have something scheduled or we were gonna do, then our our thing trunks this other opportunity. I was, oh, I had a weekend away with my wife. We had a we were doing a staycation.
SPEAKER_01We was gonna stay at the house and okay, you know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_04Have a little time together, you know. So um, I'm I'm not giving that up to go speak somewhere. Somebody else will speak and it'll be a blessing. But I'm gonna be over here staycationing with my wife, you know.
SPEAKER_01So can't nobody else do that. Amen. Ain't nobody else be here do that.
SPEAKER_03I mean, great answer. Great answer.
SPEAKER_01All right. Number seven and number eight kind of run together. Do you are they separate to you? They're the same to me. Girl. All right. Number seven, it's been our observation that so many Christian couples aren't enjoying married life. Is that your experience as well? If so, why do you think that is?
SPEAKER_00I think one reason why we see that um is not truly doing it all God's way, having a lot of their own thoughts and priorities, and things are out of alignment.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00And so when we're out of alignment with God, it's not gonna feel good.
SPEAKER_01Right. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I think the two things I see where I see Christian couples that they're but they're not enjoying marriage is one, they're not doing it God's way. Um, so you got a husband that's not loving his wife, not leading the family spiritually, you got a wife that's not submitting to her husband or respecting him the way that God would have her to. Um, or maybe they're just doing life, they're being carnal. You know, they're they're they're we're on paper Christians, but with the really Jesus is not the Lord of much of what we do. We kind of do what we want to do and looking for God to bless it, and it's just not happening. The other thing that I see is some couples um really don't have good communication. And so with poor communication, they they're not able to, the smallest of conflict um turns into just something humongous, you know. And so I've seen some couples when I'm looking at the smallness of what they're fighting over, I realize you guys just have poor communication and and you guys don't have good conflict resolution skills. And so you guys aren't fighting over anything major. Nobody's cheated, nobody's gone out, but little bitty tips turn into really unpleasant household, unpleasant environment, unpleasant marriage because you guys haven't learned how to communicate well. So those are the two things I see in counseling a lot where it's like, man, you guys would be so much happier if you just did it God's way, or if you learned took some time to learn how to communicate effectively.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_01Amen.
SPEAKER_03I do see why you did say that, just to be fair, my love. You're so far.
SPEAKER_01Are we having good communication skills right now? I'm working on it doing it. I see you. I'm trying to work this out. Yeah, but I see you. But I do I am a submissive wife. You hear me? Did you see that? Did y'all see the witness?
SPEAKER_03You just be that anyway.
SPEAKER_01Bear witness, bear witness don't happen often.
SPEAKER_03Okay, good. Anyway, um, I know why why Dinah had asked that question because this one, it seems like the answer could be the same. But if there's a something a little bit different, you know, please feel free to add. It's just what um uh what's your take? Yeah, what's your take on why so many Christian couples are getting divorced and not on biblical grounds?
SPEAKER_00Selfishness, rapture selfishness. The idea that, you know, you have to always be happy in your marriage, you know, emotions are are leading and not the word of God. And so our emotions, we don't we don't want to allow our emotions to direct our steps, right? Because they will direct us wrong many times, because emotions can be right or wrong, and either way, they should not have authority to rule us.
SPEAKER_04Great answer. I would say in addition to selfishness, uh overriding even that is just just a lack of surrender to God, you know. Um that basically you entered into this covenant with God and your spouse, and if you're gonna leave it on an unbiblical ground, you're pretty much saying, Yeah, God, I know that you said this, but I'm I'm I'm doing it my way. Um, and so, you know, so while we're calling ourselves Christian couples, um, we're at the same time, we're not letting Jesus be Lord. And so um, unfortunately, you know, there's there's a lot of in name Christian couples that, you know, when it when the rubber meets the road, uh, they're not they're not they didn't let Jesus be Lord of how they did the marriage, so it's jacked up, and now they want out, and that they're not gonna let Jesus be the Lord of this either. So they're gonna end up being single, and Jesus ain't gonna be the Lord of that either, and they're just gonna repeat the cycle. What they need to do is submit to his lordship and see what he would do.
SPEAKER_01Amen.
SPEAKER_03Love it, love it.
SPEAKER_01Man, I I hate that. This is our last question. It says, well, it's more of a a statement for you guys, or for you guys to give a statement. We're asking each of you to give a gem or a nugget or a piece of advice to our listeners, something you would that they could hold on to and carry in in their marriage.
SPEAKER_03Mika for the women to build for the men.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_04All right, so for the men, I would say um if any any husband, right? Your your what your what your wife wants and desires and needs is everything Christ commanded us as men to be. He commanded me as a man to love my wife, and he told me how. He says, Love her like Christ love the church and gave himself. Love her, period. So if I would love my wife with that kind of love, um, and at the same time, right, there's this, there's this um this combo, right? I'm a I want to be a loving husband, but I'm also a spiritual leader. I need to be a man that is letting God lead my life. And if you can get those two things combined, a man that's letting Christ lead him and that's loving his wife, I promise you, brothers, your woman will be, she will be happy with that version of you. Um, and more than that, God will be pleased with that version of you. Um, be a man that let the Lord lead your life. Um, because many, I know a lot of guys will say things like, man, well, I didn't I didn't have a good dad, or my parents didn't stay married, I didn't have a physical example. Jesus becomes to you and me everything that we need to know about what it is to be a man.
SPEAKER_01Amen.
SPEAKER_04Um, so when I'm wondering, man, what is what does it be, what does it look like to be a provider? Look at Jesus. What does it look like to deal with some somebody difficult? Look at Jesus. Everything I need to know, I just need to look to Jesus. He that's my example of what it is to be a man. Uh, what does it look like to stand up for spiritual? Look at Jesus. When does he put a foot down? Look at Jesus. And um, and and so I would that would be my advice to men. Don't look elsewhere, don't be looking at Steve Harvey, um, goofy dude with divorces on his route. I'm sorry. Don't be looking at Dr. Phil, don't be looking here and there. Look, look to Jesus, right? And uh that he will help you be the man that your woman desires. Uh, because God got all the game in the world, and he's he gave it to us in the word of God.
SPEAKER_03So hey, I ain't gonna let you be out there by yourself. Yeah, goofy dude. Come on. So now we and then together and then ride and die.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_01Okay, Mika, for the ladies, for the wives.
SPEAKER_00Yes, I would say all if if the men do that, it'll make our part much easier. But even if they don't, right, come on. We are to be in line with God and and treat your man. Obey him, submit to him like you would to Christ and pray for you.
SPEAKER_03Yes, Lord.
SPEAKER_00Amen. Oh my goodness. They need our prayer so much. True story. Because they have so many decisions to make. Right. Um, that they need direction. We know they need direction, right? Right, right, right. Oftentimes they won't receive it from us, but they'll we need to be praying for our husbands. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_03So you're saying we need we need direction. Hold on, hold on. Don't stop, don't stop there.
SPEAKER_04They need to hear this. Don't just pray for me. I need you to move. Come on, man.
SPEAKER_01Hey, come on, reach back into that. Reach back into that sermon.
SPEAKER_00The counterpart to that. I did say we want to obey and submit to our husbands.
SPEAKER_04Put the meat on the bones.
SPEAKER_00He is the king of your home. Yes. You know, just below Jesus. So treat him like that.
SPEAKER_01Amen.
SPEAKER_00Treat him like that. You just ain't gonna say it. What is that?
SPEAKER_04Oh, come on.
SPEAKER_01She has said it before. I heard the sermon being. I heard the sermon.
SPEAKER_04Tell him what you do, right? Oh man.
SPEAKER_00Treat him like the king that God said he is. He is he is the authority in your home. So for some of us, that means we need to step back and let them be the man. Right. Stop trying to do everything and carry everything. He's the man. Also, free yourself. Free yourself. Free yourself.
SPEAKER_04Free yourself. Free yourself.
SPEAKER_03But you say, Mickey, we need direction, correction, and affection, huh? Is that it, Bill? Hey, she I mean one thing.
SPEAKER_00As he would say, this is an example that we some sometimes we as women can get wrapped up in doing so much, you know, whether it's we're working outside the home, we're taking care of kids, we're shuffling them to and from practice and cooking dinner and this, that, the other, to where you get so worn out you don't have time to really give attention to your husband. And they desire that. They thrive off of that. My husband once told me he can eat peanut butter and jelly for dinner. That means he could get sex. We don't have to have steak and potato dinner. Okay. So, you know, sometimes we put extra pressure on ourselves as wives that our husbands are not putting on us. So we need to, you know, see what their needs are as sometimes, you know, just as a reminder and let him tell you. And don't take it, no, don't take any offense. Just hear it and see how you can incorporate his needs more into yours. Because the truth is, as both of your needs are met, you're you're gonna be happier in your marriage.
SPEAKER_03In our closing, is there some closing remarks that you would like to say to our beautiful friends right here?
SPEAKER_01Don't try to make me all sentimental. They know how much I love them. Okay, am I talking to who am I talking to? The people or am I talking to? The buffs.
SPEAKER_03Just let them use you.
SPEAKER_01To the people. We love these people over here so much. And we thank you guys so very much for being a part of our first interview here on BLP. We would we really wouldn't have had it any other way because you guys truly were an instrument. We were feeling almost very pregnant with this idea. We were like, uh oh, we feel it, and we we think it can happen, and and I mean, it was it was your charge, uh, PB, that you know, set a fire under my husband, and and it was like, okay, it's time for us to step out on this, put our hands to the plow and see where God takes it. So we thank you guys so much for this. And we're having such a fun time with it. I don't know what maybe it was a lack in confidence of ourselves, but we shouldn't even have had that because it's all God's work, right? And our confidence should have been our our our our not our what am I trying to say? Our our effort should have been in him, not in looking towards us to make this happen. We should have been looking for him to make this happen.
SPEAKER_03You don't know what you don't know. And when sometimes God does move on you to make it.
SPEAKER_01But when you put that hand to the plow, he he opened up so many doors, and it was it was your encouragement. It was you guys' encouragement and example, and we just we love y'all and we just thank y'all so much.
SPEAKER_03Um, I want to say, um, in addition to what Dinah has said, that um God has, you know, as far as this is concerned, BIP, God has brought several different people along the way at different junctures. It started off with one of my best friends who said, Hey man, I think that there may be a gifting in this area. That was one thing to open my eyes to even consider it. Then it was running by someone that I I really love, admire, adore, and respect. And then, like, yeah, I I can I agree with that. And then uh us finding ourselves over here, and I remember exactly um maybe not word for word, but you you said something that was so pivotal, pivotal to me, uh, Bill, when you said, you know, if you feel that God has put something on your heart to do, go on, check it out, try it. The worst you can do is feel, you know, get out there and see if there's some legs behind it, you know. And when I heard that, it it just really um opened my eyes to say, let's let's go for it, you know. Um, Mika, um now I can almost get teary right here. What you've been for my girls um is just invaluable. Um, I just love you to death for it. Absolutely. You know, I'm still always kind of girl included.
SPEAKER_01I'm still always hello.
SPEAKER_03I still always get a little bit nervous around you. You got this kind of like school teacher thing. I'm like, Mika, call us, yes, whatever she said. Whatever she's saying. No, but but seriously, whatever, whatever, whenever, however, um uh for what you you you have done for my daughters has just been and my wife has been invaluable. Bill, you know, you guys don't know. We we we not only see this couple at church, they have really um taken us under their wings, um helping us to grow in being the people that God has called us to be in BIP and in ministry. And um, we hang out together, we vacation together. My man makes a wicked Hawaiian! What is it? What is it, a Hawaiian rib?
SPEAKER_01Hawaiian rib, baby.
SPEAKER_03Man, Houston's Flemings ain't got nothing on it. Oh his domino game is a little shaky, but you know that is what it is. Ah, this guy. But but but yeah, that's just said in tongue in cheek. But um, you guys have been um a total blessing to us, and we just love you guys tremendously, and we have no shame in letting the world know that we thank God for you guys.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely, absolutely, man.
SPEAKER_04Know that it is mutual, man. We love you guys, and um man, I'm I'm excited every time I see a post and I see a BIP video go up, you know, because the Bible says in Hebrews 10, 24, man, let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works. And, you know, as as people have stirred me up and encouraged me along the way, uh, we're stirring and encouraging you guys. You guys are gonna be stirring and encouraging other people. And it's really the it's it's it's just the kingdom of God, bro. We're we're gonna love on each other, bro. We're gonna blossom and bloom, we're gonna win together. And um, just seeing you guys do do your ministry, which we believe in, you know. Um, we believe that God has called you guys to do it, that he it's on your heart, he's blessed you to do it. So we we stepped aside at church and said, Y'all do it. I want you to do it. Do it because one one thing I know about ministry, the way you grow in it is doing it. And so um, and I'm I'm I'm loving every minute of seeing what God is doing with you guys. I know he just getting started, so um, man, we're we're blessed to be a part of this, blessed to be you know, family with you guys, and uh it's mutual. We we love y'all right back.
SPEAKER_00Yep, you a lot and excited to see what God's gonna continue to do.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and our kids too, man. Absolutely. We gotta tear down God is working all through the ranks, you know. So these babies are rolling. You know, we we saw we saw two of them last night doing their thing. So that was awesome.
SPEAKER_01That was lovely.
SPEAKER_04Oh, they were they were they were leading worship last night at a church.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I haven't said that. Praise and worship, y'all. Praise and worship.
SPEAKER_03Praise and worship. Anyway, thank you, Buffing Tents, for hanging out on us, being our very first interview. We love you, and we just say we'll catch you guys later. Absolutely. Thanks.
SPEAKER_00Okay, thank you. See you later. Bye, guys.
