How Good Are Humans

Turning Men's Lives Around | Bernard "BJ" Sabadi and Kunjur Men's Collective

Isaac McCarthy Season 6 Episode 14

Finding mental health support can be an expensive, inaccessible and intimidating experience. This experience is additionally difficult for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. And men are doggedly reluctant to seek out health services, let alone mental health services, until the last safe moment; sometimes, not until it's too late. Indigenous children are witnessing family breakdowns and domestic violence on an alarming scale. They are suffering a separation with traditional culture, they are more likely to be incarcerated and to die young, and they are suiciding at a rate far above the mean for Australia.

The team at Kunjur Men's Collective in Cairns are working to change this, and they're succeeding.

Bernard Sabadi, the founder of the group, joins me to discuss their efforts.
