The Ebone Zone

Unlawful Use of Kindness

On July 9 in sunny Key West, Florida, what began as a routine moment—waiting for a chicken to cross the road—escalated into a full-blown road‑rage incident. Cynthia Diaz Sosa, 38, halted her car on Petronia Street to let the chicken pass. Another driver, Perla DeMiller, grew impatient, honked, sped past, and tragically ran over the bird. Fueled by fury, Sosa pursued DeMiller to the intersection of Emma and Olivia Streets, forced her vehicle to stop, and pulled out bear mace—spraying both DeMiller and her passenger in the face. The victims were treated on the scene while Sosa made a clean getaway, later turning herself in.

What started as a simple act of kindness turned into an arrest—raising questions about extreme road rage, animal empathy, and whether justice in this case is “fowl” or fair.
