Welcome to Cortburg Speaks Retirement

An audio podcast about investing in the stock market, financial planning, money management and retirement planning.  Each Wednesday, we help investors at all stages of life learn how to potentially grow and preserve their money from first job through retirement.

Now here is your host, Miguel Gonzalez.

Good morning and welcome to the CORTBURG SPEAKS RETIREMENT audio podcast.

This week, I want to talk about something that can make a lifelong impact: teaching kids about money. Financial habits form early, and with the right guidance, children can grow into adults who are confident and responsible with their finances.

When children are little, keep it simple—let them save coins in a piggy bank or set aside money for a toy. These moments show them that money is earned, saved, and spent.

As they grow, give them hands-on practice. An allowance divided into categories—spend, save, give—teaches kids that every dollar has a purpose.

By middle or high school, the lessons get bigger. They may start budgeting for their own needs and learning how credit works. A supervised checking account or prepaid card can provide safe experience.

And as young adults, financial independence takes center stage. This is the time to understand loans, credit cards, and the benefits of starting to save for retirement early.

Above all, kids learn most by watching. Talking openly about your financial decisions shows them money is something to manage wisely—not something to fear.

Teaching kids about money doesn’t have to be complicated. With step-by-step guidance and leading by example, you give them a foundation that lasts a lifetime.
