Welcome to another episode of the Pet PawCast. Today I thought we could discuss adding a pet to your home.  There are many places you can find a pet, a shelter, rescue, breeder or pet store.  I am going to focus on the process of adopting from a shelter or rescue and from breeders.  I know a lot of people have gotten dogs and cats from pet stores, but I encourage everyone who is listening to go a different route.  Most pets in pet stores come from puppy mills, or kitty mills and in my opinion that is not how we should be bringing animals into the world.

If you are looking for a puppy or a specific breed, I encourage you to reach out to breed specific rescues.  These can be great places to find an animal and typically these types of organizations offer post-adoption support for pet parents, which can be invaluable.

Maybe you are looking to adopt a dog, or cat, and if so I encourage you to adopt if possible.  There are many animals in shelters who are looking for a loving home.  My sister, Jenna, decided she wanted to adopt a dog.  She is joining me today to talk about her experience about bringing Penny home.

………..(Interview with Jenna)

Working with a breeder can be another great option when bringing a pet into your home.  When I say breeder, I am sure most people think dogs, but there are responsible breeders for all types of animals. It is always important to interview the breeder you are looking to adopt from just as it is important for them to interview you before allowing you to take a dog home.  Unfortunately, this is an unregulated field and not all breeders follow what some may call standards.  We are not here to call out breeders or say all breeders are not doing what they should, but as reality this is something that we need to be aware of.  Here is my friend Megan on her experience bringing her dog, MJ, home.

……………(Interview with Megan)

Bringing a pet into your life is a commitment and a life-long one, or at the least the life of your pet.  It is our duty to make sure we are helping our pets by doing our do-diligence before jumping in and bringing a pet home.
