00:03:14.060 --> 00:03:25.699 And these Christian staunch, you know, Christians don't want to admit that in fact Jesus, uh, was married and apparently had two children and, and, uh, those people are, with was understanding Mary to be that the woman in Luke seven that washes Jesus's feet with, with oil. 00:03:53.139 --> 00:03:56.219 Um, and we don't, we don't actually, that, that could be true. 00:03:56.300 --> 00:03:57.520 It's not necessarily true. 00:03:57.539 --> 00:04:02.699 And so we're not going to read that and understand Mary to be, uh, one, uh, someone like that either. 00:04:02.699 --> 00:04:17.720 Um, there's, there's some, some facts though that we are able to pull, uh, for, from women in Jesus's day, people have understated, uh, the role of women in Jesus's day the culture or how you grew up, women, uh, were, were, could have different levels of authority and leadership. 00:04:38.579 --> 00:04:43.560 Uh, from my understanding in Jesus's day, Egyptian women could have a great authority and rule. 00:04:43.720 --> 00:04:51.220 Roman women did not, but they could be the, uh, basically they could be the force behind a paper King essentially. 00:04:51.220 --> 00:05:01.579 Um, but in Jewish culture, almost, uh, with, without controversy, women were, were more limited in their, in their influence. 00:05:01.759 --> 00:05:06.040 Uh, her basically a woman's status was just above a Gentile or a slave. 00:05:06.160 --> 00:05:23.519 And when she was married, she was expected that she would have to obey, uh, listen to her husband as, as if she was a slave to her husband, um, her, her public testimony and legal proceedings, uh, proceedings was limited. 00:05:23.519 --> 00:05:29.600 Um, if it went against the husband or if the husband didn't approve of her saying what, what she would say. 00:05:30.329 --> 00:05:36.959 And so much of her, her daily worship would have been confined exclusively to the home. 00:05:37.180 --> 00:05:54.980 Um, even going outside to the market or doing a lot of other things, although it was possible and you could do it, it was frowned upon and looked down upon from my understanding, especially you'd understand, especially without wearing a great coverings and, and taking great measures to be able to, to, to do that. 00:05:55.480 --> 00:06:02.740 And so most of her worship, especially day-to-day worship was limited to in the home and passing her faith on to her children. 00:06:03.579 --> 00:06:14.639 Um, this is the society that Jesus comes onto the scene and, and I don't know if you've read the Bible with the intention of, of learning how Jesus feels about women, but it's an amazing study actually. 00:06:14.639 --> 00:06:29.379 Uh, it's a, it's a study that is totally, uh, he, he was whatever the cutting edge, whatever, whatever makes, what would make you feel uncomfortable in, in terms of, uh, not necessarily with women, but in terms of just social norms, uh, Jesus would do that. 00:06:29.459 --> 00:06:39.500 I imagine that it, I don't know how you guys would feel if I came in, in flip-flops and I was preaching in flip-flops for me, if I saw someone do that, I would judge them a little bit. 00:06:39.839 --> 00:06:45.480 Um, Jesus might preach in flip-flops, but he would, he would push whatever cultural norms we were talking just now. 00:06:45.560 --> 00:06:51.100 And Joe asked me, do you want to wear a Santa hat basically to preach? 00:06:51.319 --> 00:06:54.399 And I'm like, you know, that goes, there's a lack of reverence maybe. 00:06:54.519 --> 00:06:55.420 And why is there Jesus might wear a Santa hat, you know, and he's pushing whatever's comfortable, whatever's normal. 00:07:05.660 --> 00:07:06.459 He's saying, no, no, no. 00:07:06.519 --> 00:07:09.019 You, you just think that you don't know that you just think it. 00:07:09.019 --> 00:07:21.019 And so we are going to see even in the Bible, how Jesus validates and empowers women and actually how it helps him in his ministry, uh, right at the end of his life and then, and then his resurrection. 00:07:21.639 --> 00:07:24.339 Um, and so we're, we're here and we're in loop eight. 00:07:28.620 --> 00:07:37.620 If you guys are pulling anything, if you're going to look with any kind of eyes, I want to ask you to look through the eyes of Mary being extremely loyal. 00:07:37.620 --> 00:07:42.240 And I want you to ask yourself a question is how is your loyalty to Jesus this morning? 00:07:42.660 --> 00:07:47.399 And where is your, where and when is your loyalty to Jesus most lacking? 00:07:47.959 --> 00:07:50.879 We're going to see Mary when she's doing well. 00:07:50.879 --> 00:07:54.500 And when she's very prominent and when things are going well, she's extremely loyal. 00:07:54.500 --> 00:07:56.720 And some of us struggle when things are going well to be loyal. 00:07:56.899 --> 00:08:01.579 And we're going to see Mary when it's the most difficult to follow Jesus. 00:08:01.860 --> 00:08:03.199 We're going to see her loyalty there too. 00:08:03.300 --> 00:08:07.160 And for some of us, when things aren't going well, it's easy to say, well, God is not here. 00:08:07.160 --> 00:08:10.540 And so I'm not going to be loyal to Jesus both both ways. 00:08:10.740 --> 00:08:11.860 Mary is extremely loyal. 00:08:12.040 --> 00:08:13.040 Here we go. 00:08:13.660 --> 00:08:23.759 It says, after this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God, the 12 were with him. 00:08:24.040 --> 00:08:28.079 And also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases. 00:08:28.500 --> 00:08:31.699 Mary called Magdalene from whom seven demons had come out. 00:08:31.699 --> 00:08:37.960 Joanna, the wife of Chusa, the manager of Herod's household, Susanna, and many others. 00:08:38.058 --> 00:08:42.580 These women were helping to support them out of their own means. 00:08:42.740 --> 00:08:42.899 Okay. 00:08:44.179 --> 00:08:49.740 So, this is the first time that we're formally introduced to Mary. 00:08:50.080 --> 00:08:58.840 And it says that, it makes a note that there's seven, there's seven evil spirits that Jesus pulled out of Mary, told to leave Mary. 00:08:58.840 --> 00:09:05.720 The number seven, we understand it in Bible terms to just be completion or totality. 00:09:06.759 --> 00:09:09.860 Basically, Mary was entirely full of evil spirits. 00:09:09.960 --> 00:09:12.659 There was no hope and she was entirely full of it. 00:09:12.759 --> 00:09:25.320 Jesus, we were not taught how or told what the interaction was like, but Jesus is able to reconcile her, not only in her right mind, the right state, but also reconcile her to himself and to God. 00:09:25.320 --> 00:09:30.840 And this all would have been one, it'd be an amazing thing to see. 00:09:31.159 --> 00:09:35.159 There's something else in this text that should open our eyes. 00:09:35.259 --> 00:09:45.399 And we just looked at how, for women, there wasn't too much opportunity, especially in the Jewish culture, to raise their financial means. 00:09:45.500 --> 00:09:54.440 And yet, we're taught here that Mary was one of those people who was able to support Jesus financially, support the ministry financially. 00:09:54.440 --> 00:09:55.539 How could she do that? 00:09:55.679 --> 00:10:02.419 Well, again, we don't know exactly what this Mary Magdalene, she would have been from this, almost certainly from this town. 00:10:02.759 --> 00:10:04.820 I think it's Magdala or something to that effect. 00:10:05.600 --> 00:10:07.500 It's in Greek, it's salted fish. 00:10:07.740 --> 00:10:12.500 And so what that meant was that it basically was a massive export for fish. 00:10:12.620 --> 00:10:22.500 Potentially, either she inherited some land or she inherited a business or somehow she made her means in some way, shape or form. 00:10:23.460 --> 00:10:33.320 We see here, though, you think about being married in this time, there have been a lot of reasons for you to be grateful to Jesus, but maybe not be extremely loyal to Jesus. 00:10:33.759 --> 00:10:36.700 You are somebody who's, you've made it. 00:10:36.799 --> 00:10:44.220 Maybe it's been inherited, you've inherited something amazing, or maybe you've earned it yourself, this kind of wealth, this status. 00:10:44.340 --> 00:10:47.559 And you --> 00:11:30.399 You know, Jesus, with all of these women, I find it amazing to see that you can see from the 12 he called and from these right here, that he's not just calling one specific type of person to this loyalty and connection to him. 00:11:31.179 --> 00:11:48.019 You could do a study of the 12 apostles and understand they were kind of all mismatched up and they came from different backgrounds, different understanding of Judaism, a different connection to the Jewish faith and heritage, and yet he called them to himself. 00:11:48.500 --> 00:11:55.299 These women, you know, Jesus would have been entirely justified to work with me if he just never even, he never even allowed these women to follow him. 00:11:55.419 --> 00:12:04.559 It was it was worse than wearing a Santa hat preaching, that he allowed them to travel with him and walk with him and have this daily interaction with him. 00:12:04.639 --> 00:12:09.080 And even for him to teach them would have been like, wow, 00:21:34.619 --> 00:21:42.779 The Roman authorities saw the senselessness of making this aged man, I believe he was eighty six at the time, this aged man, a martyr. 00:21:43.940 --> 00:21:51.160 So when Polycarp was brought into the arena, the proconsul pled with him, curse Christ and I will release you. 00:21:52.359 --> 00:21:55.380 He replied, eighty six years I have served him. 00:21:55.500 --> 00:21:57.500 He has never done me wrong. 00:21:58.119 --> 00:22:01.700 How then can I blaspheme my king who has saved me? 00:22:03.359 --> 00:22:06.279 The proconsul reached for an acceptable way like to think that there's there's times if you would even sit this week and I could I could think in this week if I had to ask, OK, when were you extremely loyal to Christ? 00:24:59.759 --> 00:25:06.480 When were you neutral and when were you not and where in this neutral area could you have been more loyal to Christ? 00:25:07.140 --> 00:25:08.640 And it wouldn't have been super tomb. 00:26:11.980 --> 00:26:13.920 So this is John 20, 11. 00:26:14.920 --> 00:26:18.839 Jesus, basically, there's angels that have already come and say, hey, Jesus isn't here. 00:26:19.500 --> 00:26:23.200 Mary is emotional and still confused. 00:26:23.380 --> 00:26:24.539 And she's like, what's going on? 00:26:25.039 --> 00:26:28.220 It says, Now, Mary stood outside the tomb, crying as she
