How can you incorporate the topic of suicide into your life this week?
Be intentional and have an honest conversation about what you’ve noticed and your concerns. Listen non-judgmentally (that means not interrupting, telling them how they should/shouldn’t feel/do, and ask for best ways to support.
Be direct and ask “Are you thinking about suicide or killing yourself?

In honor of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) Mental Health Month, we are shedding light on suicide in the Black community. Observed each July, BIPOC Mental Health Month highlights the unique mental health challenges and needs of historically disenfranchised or oppressed racial and ethnic groups in the United States.
Many people in the Black community are told suicide is a "white people thing." In fact, suicide is among the leading cause of death in the United States and increasing rapidly among Blacks. Rates of suicide among Black youth have risen faster than in any other racial/ethnic group in the past two decades, with suicide rates in Black males 10-19 years-old increasing by 60%. Early adolescent Black youth are twice as likely to die by suicide as compared to their white counterparts.
This event is a candid conversation presented by Black People Die By Suicide Too, Mental Health Empowerment Agency, A Resting Place Counseling, and Graceland Therapeutics featuring black women who are mental health professionals with experience of losing loved ones to suicide and surviving suicide.
Lisa Daughtrey, mental health advocate, motivational speaker, TV & radio contributor and founder of BE Eazy, joins T-Kea and Jordan to discuss the loss of her son who died to suicide as a teenager.

"Black Mental Illness and Suicide: Dismantling the Stigma"
SUMMARY
Jordan and T-Kea, the co-hosts of the podcast Black People Die by Suicide, discuss why they decided to start the podcast and the mission of the newly formed organization, the Mental Health Empowerment Agency.
They do a wellness check and discuss the importance of incorporating healthier habits into one's lifestyle, as well as suicide in the black community. Emphasizing that suicide is not just a ‘white person’s problem’, and the passing of Stephen Twitch from the Ellen DeGeneres Show in December 2020 brings the issue to the forefront of conversation amongst the black community. Bringing to light the importance of recognizing the issue of suicide and the need to address it, and the need to create a safe environment for those struggling with mental health issues. They also discuss the need to de-stigmatize mental health within the black community and provide resources for those who are in need.
Moment of Inspiration (The Light ): If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. - African Proverb
