And the title of today's podcast is the top 10 persecuted countries around the world. And it is easy to find you can find them on open doors, so easy to find the World Watch List 2022. Reverend Ben Cooper:Yeah, all is well.
Sandra Robson:Yeah, yeah, I've had a little break and, you know, gets through of work and breaks with all these lovely bank holidays.
Reverend Ben Cooper:Everything is rolling out. And bless the Lord for that. Amen. So Sandra, we're in open doors this morning, the top 10 list. And number one is Afghanistan to North Korea. Somalia, Libya, Yemen. Eritrea. That's a that's a name from the past that we've looked at for a long time. Isn't it? Eritrea, Nigeria, Pakistan, Iran and India? Yeah. Is there anything that has taken you by surprise that has skipped around the top 10 at all there?
Sandra Robson:Um, well, unfortunately, you know, you've got some that have gone up, you know, you've got Nigeria, terrible situation in Nigeria. And India is now in the top 10, which is, you know, quite Yes. Quite shocking. Really, what's going on there in India, how things are changing there? And, you know, yeah, there's more persecution occurring because of the anti conversion law that's going into different parts of India. You know, so there are places where, you know, there's still evangelism going on, and churches are continuing. But in the places where these anti conversion laws have gone in now, you know, things are a lot harder. And, yeah, there is a lot more clashes. So yeah, so that's something that's changed. And so, yeah, I've got a few things here. I mean, last time, we were looking at released International, and their persecution trends, Africa, Asia, and Central Asia we looked at, and we saw that there was some positive signs in Central Asia. Yeah. And so I thought, well, really have a look at another organization, it might be that people are listening to this for the first time. And I deal with open doors, and they do a World Watch List, which is well known by everybody who's interested in what goes on in the persecuted church. They're also, you know, recognized by our governments. And they have a time where they get MPs involved, and they talk about what the trends are. And yeah, so they do a lot of work to support their, their roots are actually in Bibles there. So it was Brother Andrew, taking Bibles out. And he went to Russia, and places when they were behind the Iron Curtain. And the Lord said to him, you know, strengthen what remains. And that's what they're still doing in different ways. And they put put out this booklets and to help us think about that. And the first one they put out is the top 10 countries were following Jesus costs the most so I thought we'd have a look at that. And then you know that they produce the big world watch list, but obviously, everything's online now.
Reverend Ben Cooper:So easy, isn't it? Yes, I've got it in front of me. It's so easy to find.
Sandra Robson:But I do like to look at you know, the paperback paper Um, you know, be able to read it, you know, you, I know people use their mobile phones, but I like, you know, when I'm, you know, waiting somewhere in a waiting room, I can just take it take a little booklet with me and you know, read it, and, or work, you know, in my lunch break and things are preferred to have, you know, the written paper. So, for more than 360 million Christians globally, and the reality of this is the reality that, that when you follow Jesus, you might have to fit, forfeit your safety or your job. And your life could be at risk. And telling other people about Jesus is an enormous risk as well. And simply owning a Bible is a terrible danger. Yet in 10 countries that we're going to talk about many more courageous believers are faithfully following Jesus. And they might be doing this in secret. And, you know, so that's that that's their cover bit sacrifice and secrecy. So, yes,
Reverend Ben Cooper:so this top 10 list. As you look at this, it's labeled up red, and you've got the orange as well. And actually, you've got very, very high and then you've got extreme. Yeah, so when we, when, without going into too much graphic detail, when we talk about extreme we're talking about lives are taken. Complete apps, complete extremes of barbaric, barbaric, sorry, inhumane things that go on. Because in the western world at church, we don't see any persecution whatsoever doing. We don't see, hardly well, we don't see anything at all. So when you look at this, and it's quite difficult to grasp as a Western Christian looking at the world of the persecuted church, and it's so important that we just keep praying, we keep praying, you know, Britain is nowhere near on the list, it will, I can't see that will ever reach the list. But when you go through the top 50, and you have a quick look. It's quite harrowing, isn't it? Really? How many are on there? large, large nations are on their large countries are on their surprise to eat Ethiopia is down 38 QA is 49. But number one, number one, it seems to have quickly come through the ranks, doesn't it over the last number of months months? It seems to have been North Korea for quite a while hasn't. Suddenly Afghanistan has leaped to the top there. And Saudi Arabia is sitting on number 11. And Sudan is number 13. Iraq, I'm quite surprised that Iraq is at 14 So you mentioned sank about the UK Government? Are they getting more ofay more aware, more informed regarding this watch list. I know that you say that every year they come together don't know they have a special meeting where they gather and they listen.
Sandra Robson:Yeah, they are, there's more MPs getting involved. And they've sent me this little postcard thing to send to my MP. And that's what they're encouraging, you know, any followers, you know, to do. So that always continually reminding MPs that this is your son, you know that don't forget this, remember this. So, you know, there's going to be a special ministry thing on the fifth to the sixth of July. And they're asking for us to let our MPs know about that. And to tell them about this event. So that, you know, they can get more details and they can go in person or they can be online. Right. So yeah, so these little things you can do. So send this to your MP 2022 Fo RB ministerial, and why it's needed. And so yeah, so that's something that open doors are doing. So that's the advocacy, as they call it, and you just put the name of your MP on there, and it gets sent to the House of Commons. And that's all you have to do. It's very simple, very simple, very easy. So you can find out about that. You know, so it's a briefing for MPs to know what's going on in the persecuted church. I mean, it was very important with Iraq and Um, Syria. You might remember that people came over and actually spoke to the den Prime Minister and forgotten her name. What's her name? Anyway?
Reverend Ben Cooper:Yeah, yeah. Can't remember. Brian dead, Brian,
Sandra Robson:I can see that I can't think of a nice moment. But anyway, she, she was very affected by it and pledged to give help. And there was support given for rebuilding and other things go on behind the scenes that we don't appreciate. And we've got our special envoy, and she's very passionate about putting forward, you know, the persecuted church, especially the you know, what we talked about women, and they're doubly persecuted. So yes, there is more engagement, but there always could be more. So we keep praying. And the main thing is prayer, but God uses all different avenues through you know, Parliament's and politicians, there are other people who get involved with the, with the European Union. And so those things happen through that and the UN that says CSW, and they are on advising. So I can tell you about that another time. And
Reverend Ben Cooper:so it seems to be moving forward all the time. So it's always, it's always moving in a way of information is always coming through information is getting to Parliament information is obviously coming out of these ministries, you know, well, the World Watch list is growing, we can see that. So as you can find this and you can look at the trends on open doors. I think Sandra has got a beat a brief bit of information on that. But it says that I'm just reading a bit of this article, it says 5100 churches attacked in the last year. Buildings who are crushed, bombed, attacked, destroyed, looted burnt down and closed in for the foreseeable future. 5100 churches that enormous Yes. When you look at the trend when you look and you so it's a good site, and you know, open doors is a very easy site to follow. You know, so easy to find open doors.uk or sorry.org sorry.org. You can you can see so much information straight onto the World Watch List. 2022 you can find the trends Afghanistan gives you a bit of information there in Indonesia. It's got a little bit of information and North Korea and yeah, very, very informative. Very, very good. Yeah. And like Sandra just read out at least 360 million Christians around the world experience high levels of persecution and discrimination is astonishing. As a massive number isn't one in seven of the global Christian population, persecution of Christians has reached the highest level. Since Open Doors world watch lists began nearly 30 years ago. increase increase. But obviously the Bible tells us that doesn't it. So there's nothing to take us by surprise, really. But the extreme and the rise of violence continues to arise. And obviously, you can read a bit further on about the Taliban in Afghanistan, and hitting the headlines around the world. Very, very good bit of information, I must say when you read this through a really, really eye opening, eye opening in a very powerful way.
Sandra Robson:Yes. So thinking about Afghanistan, the new magazine, open doors, May to June, which just came through the post and has an article with an update from somebody who is a partner with the open doors. And I thought I'd just read a little bit of it because it is lifting, although, you know, the background is very dark. And you can see, you know, in the picture that women are completely covered. Yeah. You know, to see through, and they have been very badly hit by the Taliban taking over they've virtually had to disappear. And they're not allowed, you know, to be in places of authority in the public. So it says it's been nine months since the Taliban reinstated their control over Afghanistan and Afghan believers both those who stayed and those who fled are grateful for your ongoing prayers and support It makes a huge difference. And this open doors partner, Hannah. She shares more of what the situation is like she says, These days there is relative peace. But uncertainty reigns in the hearts of the people as the days unfold, the economy is debt written and completely dependent on foreign aid. 1000s have lost their jobs. In the political upheaval upheaval. There's a huge humanitarian problem for people. And she says the situation is especially dire for women and girls, that education has ground to a halt in March, the Taliban went back on their commitment to reopen secondary schools for girls. While some women in health care and essential services have been allowed to join the workforce, the majority are not allowed to work. Wow. So and then she says, In such circumstances, how do you believe this hold unswervingly to the hope we profess? The answer is, of course, for He who promised his faithful, which is in Hebrews 1023. And she says, I'm very hopeful. Because the reason that there are believers that stay is not because of intervention of any human being. It is solely the work of God, the hope, the soul work of the Holy Spirit. Open Doors, teams are doing incredible things like being obedient, going to places looking listening, many times they go to places that are not safe for them to go and investigate. Our teams are walking, serving, washing feet, raising the flag, when abuse is present, connecting to the church. And we are hopeful that when God looks at us and our teams, he will see the faithfulness of many men and women, and he will bring more people to Himself, praise God. So the very first thing is to pray, because prayer is not an active passive thing that people think it is. It's really what drives us to the next step. Because it leads us pray that Jesus would lead us to what to do, and to give us endurance,
Reverend Ben Cooper:a very interesting word, the Sandra's brought into the conversation that endurance, really, really important, you know, to keep enduring to keep going to keep praying, to never give up, you know, we might think of endurance as, or terminology for an athlete, but it's a very biblical terminology just to keep going. And I really believe that God is asking us in the western church to pray to be enduring to press on you know, to really push these the this prayer through and just off guard to really continually strengthen and comfort our brothers and sisters around the world as we hear all this information coming through, but we've got to endure as well. That so as we enjoy they injures we partner together in prayer and worship and, and lifting up our brothers and sisters around the world that we endure this together, you know, and these pictures are quite harrowing on the World Watch List. 2022 the trends and as Sandra said, you got these images of these women with these face coverings on with these tiny little grids, these tiny little grids to see for very, very disturbing. We are so free in in the West in the UK, the church within the UK, we're so free. God just help us not Help us, Lord, keep our eyes on Jesus. Okay, so um, are
Sandra Robson:you Yeah, so, as I was saying, you know, with, with just Ramadan is finished, just come finished. And we said, Did you know that there was that opportunity for the 30 days to pray? And it was for praying for dreams and visions, and people are seeing dreams and visions, amen. And having dreams. And Hannah picks up on this. She says pray for dreams and visions. Give thanks for them. God loves the people and the country so much. Thank God for being God and being sovereign in this country. Pray for the displaced that are separated from their families, pray for those whose dreams are being snatched from them. They are women and they don't know what the future holds. I pray that they would find God's comfort at this time. Hanna is confident in the goodness of God towards the people of Afghanistan. She says no amount of human effort can work against the powers and principalities working here. You can take every last airplane, I think this is the bit I was, it was quite, you know, powerful. She says you can take every last airplane in the world and take every last believer from this country. And the people will still be having dreams and visions. So what she means is, you know what, no matter what man does, isn't it to stop the work? As God says, you know, if we don't praise, then the stones will cry out, yeah, he will meet the people who are crying out for him. Even if people can't tell each other. Every way is being blocked, he will continue to bring in those people. And he will continue to make the connections. And it is because the power of the Holy Spirit and is miraculous. And people will still be having dreams and visions, she says, and there will still be persecution, but God will continue to grow his church. And it was interesting because I was going to do this before, wasn't I? And I wasn't able to because I then had to work. And I wrote last time that I was praying about Scripture. And I had I put down bearing fruit in suffering. And then I heard the Lord surrounds his people for now and ever more. And that came from what's Andrew? Brother Andrew from World Watch says In the beginning here, but the bearing fruit and suffering was just something I was thinking about. And that really ties up with this. And this has only just arrived. So it's just real confirmation. And this morning, I was reading that devotional that I've been reading, extreme devotion. And it was about the pastor who was the catalyst for the beginning of release International. And apparently when he was in solitary confinement, yeah, he had though, so there was no light. He had no light. Wow. And it was sound a soundproof, he couldn't hear anything. Apparently, he he was praying. And then he just started to put these sermons together. In his head. I don't know whether he spoke them out loud. But anyway, it said that he just when he came out of prison, he wrote all the sermons down in a book.
Reverend Ben Cooper:So God, like downloaded all this information.
Sandra Robson:Yes. But then there's a letter apparently, he got a letter from a somebody in Canada, who had been in prison at the time, as well. And this guy had been in prison because he'd done the wrong thing. He said he'd become wayward. But he cried out to God in that prison. Right? Yeah. And he asked God if he was real, that he would give him things to listen to about him is he said that he, he knew about God, he knew about Jesus, but he'd gone away. And he said, I really need to hear from you something, a sermon, you know, and he said, Then the Lord said to him, sit down. And, and then he said, he suddenly heart started hearing, as if he was there in a church hearing a sermon. Wow. Yeah, in another place in another place in another place. And so then, when he got out of jail, I don't know how but anyway, he, he went to a bookshop. And he, he found this book about the prayers. I don't know if he was led to it. But and he was astounded because this book mode version was by Wynberg, about sermons in solitude. Where was he heard?
Reverend Ben Cooper:sermons in solitude?
Sandra Robson:Yes, sermons in solitude- Well, what he heard, and apparently three other letters came from other places, confirming the same thing that as William Wahlberg was saying these things, God was stressed missing them to these people who needed to hear them. And so you know, it just comes you know, again
Reverend Ben Cooper:quite interesting because the script, yeah, the Scripture does talk about it,
Sandra Robson:does not return void. Yeah, the word does not return void.
Reverend Ben Cooper:And Paul makes it very clear that even though I can't be with you in bodily form, I'm with you in spirit. So there is a way that God gets us and enables us to communicate without actually being in the presence so another brother or sister
Sandra Robson:so if every You feel that you've got a prompting to pray for a particular country or a particular person? Do it, because they need it. At that time, we've seen that and if somebody was being, you know, well tortured and and they said that they at that moment, they knew that people were particularly praying for them. Yeah. So it's been a, you know, attuning ourselves, isn't it? And suddenly think, no, I'm gonna pray about this, you know, I, you know, it doesn't matter if you can put five minutes even for a minute, even when you're in your car just for a moment. So we are connected, and God is connecting us. And he said, you know about obedience, and the fact that he did that in solitude, and people would think he was crazy, but he believed to do it. And he was saying about how God wants the best, he wants to give us more than we expect. And, and he wants us to exercise that faith. When we're in a, you know, a difficult situation. So we may be in a difficult situation. And, you know, what we're hearing about the persecuted church that encourages us to step out in faith, knowing what they've gone through, or saying something, but also in prayer as well. So I just found that quite my, yes, this morning, that was quite, you know, a revelation to me, and to me, for me a challenge to do that, and to, you know, take those moments more and more, it's so easy to get so busy, you know, with work and different things, and, you know, and, but we do need to take that time that, you know, whatever time we can snatch that time and say and pray. And, you know, perhaps it is that you're, you know, God is focusing you on a particular country. For me, I am giving you an overview, because I feel that's, you know what the Lord wants me to do. But perhaps you need to, you know, focus on a particular country. I mean, here, they're saying, you know, there's a silence for silence a brand new prayer resource that you can use in a small group to help you pray for Afghanistan. So you know, they do give a lot of support and helps for us to pray. And we've looked at North Korea, and we know that amazing stories coming out of North Korea amongst all the suffering that goes on there. I think, what a while back, Somalia, number three, I mentioned about them. And you know, you know, you can't be a Christian there. This lady who became a Christian, she was beaten by her family locked up in a room. And they tried to marry her off to the local Muslim leader, but she escaped. And life is hard for her, but she trust Jesus. And there's lots of refugees across the Horn of Africa, and ask the Lord to help open doors partners to reach them, and to, you know, to bring them and supports as they need it. And it says that, you know, a lot of problems have occurred because of decades of civil war, and also the threat of Islamic extremism, and help those Christians who are there in secret Yeah, that they will remain strong in their faith and be faithful, and He will protect them and protect the work of open doors. And then you have Libya. And we've talked about Libya. And that, you know, there were people working in Libya, from other countries who were then making contact with Libyans and how they people were coming to faith there and mazing. And but again, you know, it says this Libyan woman expressed an interest in Christianity and she risked house arrest forced marriage, or an honor killing Libya, men become Christian. They face his violence attack, losing his job, physical and mental abuse, goodness, communication from his family. It's terrifying place to follow Jesus, please keep praying for our courageous brothers and sisters.
Reverend Ben Cooper:Keep praying that keeps coming up. Keep praying, never give up in the power of prayer. You know, prayer is changing everything prayer, you know. It's just like an alias I think of an alias. You know, on that road, you Lord, you want me to go and pray for for him? Do you know that he is he is persecuting. He is the one that is bringing this person you want me to go and pray for him? And God said, analyze don't worry about what what you think about him. Don't worry about your opinion. And I think that's very, very important, as well that we pray for the terrorists and those that are bringing the persecution Yes. It's very, very important that we pray for both sides of the cross in this situation. You And a nice was told to go and pray for for soul. Go and pray for soul soul, you know, get go and pray for him but but God, have you heard what he is doing? Have you heard of this uprising? Do you know that he's bringing letters? Do you know that he's trying to persecute the Christian God said, analyze, just go and pray. And I believe that's what we should be doing as well just go and pray and not analyze and not unpack it and not try and swerve praying for those that bring the persecution, you know, pray for those that are bringing the persecution that they will have a revelation because that's what happened to Sol Sol. He God revealed Himself to him. And that's what we are asking God reveal yourself to the terrorists to those that are bringing the persecution reveal yourself to these nations reveal yourself, God reveal yourself through revelation or knowledge. really needed to pray for the prey for the enemy?
Sandra Robson:Yeah.
Reverend Ben Cooper:Yeah. Really important.
Sandra Robson:Yeah. And then at number five, we have Yemen. Yeah. And of course, we know there's terrible civil war going on there. Since the terrible really bad it's an Arab Springs. And we often forget about it, you know, and we're looking at what's going on in Ukraine. And, you know, terrible things have been going on in Yemen, and sort of being, you know, forgotten. And so there are wars going on in different places. And Yemen is suffering from one of the greatest humanitarian crisis in the world, but Christians are even more vulnerable. Because relief is distributed by local Muslim leaders, who often deliberately neglect anybody suspected of not being a devout Muslim. And this is a quote from a believer, when I came to faith, I thought I was the only believer in Yemen. Now I know many, and there are many more likers. So pray for them. And again, you know, it is, you know, it's terrible. And war is awful. But again, God works through these things. And you know, many people who would not cry out to Him do cry out to Him in these situations. And many people have been saved, and you know, and yeah, so yeah, so we do pray for them. We pray for speed, peace and stability and freedom for the Yemeni people who suffered a civil war for nearly a decade. We pray for the secret Christians who live under constant threat because of their faith to receive courage, wisdom and boldness. Yemeni is seeking to know about Jesus to find the right channels to learn about Jesus and become followers of him. Wow, Lord, we do Yeah, we bring them before you and yeah, for that needs to be met. And I'll finish with a a trailer I've got a few things on a trailer that they're at number six now a trailer and so, that in the booklet for this, the magazine, the Open Doors magazine for for the first month, they are doing an article particular focus on Eritrea, right because it is 20 years since the government this spring is trying to use since the government in Eritrea restricted religious expression to only Catholic, Catholic, Lutheran, Orthodox Christian and Sunni Islam, everything else is illegal in Atreya so
Reverend Ben Cooper:significant
Sandra Robson:so we've we've got a testimony from a pastor who was put in prison for his faith. And so he's talking about his experience and then what would be good to pray for. So it says
Reverend Ben Cooper:so much information on this song was written all this stuff I've just been perusing through and great website I got to say it's a great website that open doors was put together very easy to find open doors.org and go straight onto the rankings. You've got number one all the way through obviously to 50 and you can just click on to any one of those and it just opens up directly it tells you a bit of blurb about what's going on. It's really well worth a go through this this internet page are regarding open doors, the World Watch list. So Sandra is a great thing. You brought to the table, Eritrea. Let's have a look at Eritrea. What we got there? How many Christians 2.6 million main threats. You know, it tells you the main threats tells you everything is going on how you can support it how Christians are persecuted in Eritrea. It's just a great bit of information, isn't it? Sandra? Yes.
Sandra Robson:So there's, I think there's about 1000 Christians are in prison for their faith. Yeah. And some of them are pastors, and they've been locked up for decades. Over a decade.
Reverend Ben Cooper:Yeah, it talks about house arrest as and it talks about, you know, single people being held hostage and underground church, leadership's people being led away, financial destruction, the breadwinner taken out, goodness gracious, what what information, they've got areas, that the work that it must take the work that it must take to get all this together so quickly. Very, very powerfully done, easy to read. What a process to get all this together.
Sandra Robson:Yeah, that's why they're so highly respected. You know, and, as I say, governments take note of them, and, you know, there's certain American equivalents and there's other countries, you know, there's open doors, equivalents. And yeah, they are very respected and seen as a very good
Reverend Ben Cooper:source. Yeah. Very reliable,
Sandra Robson:very reliable. That's the word very reliable. Source.
Reverend Ben Cooper:Chandra, we thank you so much for what you brought today. Very much.
Sandra Robson:So I'll just finish off with his testimony says, starting from that moment, believers were repeatedly relaxed, arrested and freed. So when they said right, no other religious expression explains, has to Gideon sometimes they stayed in prison for years a year, sometimes a month. Some high level, church leaders have been imprisoned for 2020 years. During his detention, for involvements in a denomination not allowed by the government. Pastor Gideon experienced mental and physical torture, including forced labor, heavy beatings and a shortage of food. We were treated as slaves. Pastor says, boss, it was the monotony that he found the hardest. You just sit there, the pain that you feel internally, ends up traumatizing you. They ask you to deny your faith and to hate it. There were times when the temptation to deny Christ was very real. But with God's help, we persevered, and said, No. How do we so Excuse me? Yes, they would have freed us earlier. And that's where the prayer comes in. Because at that moment when they are being told to deny their faith, and we pray for them, we don't know that but God just says, Pray for somebody and pray for those in Eritrea. And we pray that, you know, God uses that prayer to strengthen a believer. And despite the awful conditions, there were moments of joy as inmates and even guards became Christian. So that's what you were saying. Why don't you Yeah, about you know, the guards. Yeah, they're persecute that they've come to Christ through seeing the way normal loss of the supernatural Christians. Yeah. And some of the happy moments during my time, happy moments.
Reverend Ben Cooper:What a worry.
Sandra Robson:My time in prison were when I met people who accepted the Lord. When we were in this suffering, we truly searched for God's face. We prayed. Now released pastor Gideon observes that his faith and ministry has grown. The power and grace of God gave that God gave me after prisoners better than before prison. But he says knowing he could end up in prison again. It's the same for many Christians a reality he is unafraid to highlight. We tell people that being a Christian does not only mean accepting Jesus, rather we tell them that there are also prison and challenges. What makes us happy is that the gospel is spreading. Now more than ever before, people especially the young people are coming to Christ. Persecution has not stopped the church God. So he says about praying for prisoners. Yeah, praying for the government and praying for the church. So says Heavenly Father, sustain all Christian prisoners spiritually, physically and emotionally, provide joy and stuff. furring and bring about their release, heal those seeking to Move on After being in prison and Holy Spirit move in the hearts of the AirTrain government open their eyes to the value and role of all Christians to a astray in this society. May presidents F K. F workI and his officials have life changing encounters with you, Lord Jesus provide fellowship and discipleship for all Christians, strengthen, protect and sustain church leaders. How would the persecution be if Christians from abroad had not prayed for us? We remain standing because they pray. What would have happened if they had not prayed? We believe God heard their prayer. And we stood because he his prayers.
Reverend Ben Cooper:There are. So much information.
