example."},{"startTime":435.339,"endTime":439.529,"body":"One of the biggest land conservation"},{"startTime":435.339,"endTime":439.529,"body":"challenges in the country today is the"},{"startTime":439.529,"endTime":442.979,"body":"loss of large, intact, working forests."},{"startTime":443.259,"endTime":446.269,"body":"And by working forests, I mean forests"},{"startTime":443.259,"endTime":446.269,"body":"that are still being harvested."},{"startTime":446.749,"endTime":451.769,"body":"They're still on the tax rolls, so they"},{"startTime":446.749,"endTime":451.769,"body":"support the tax base and the jobs in"},{"startTime":451.769,"endTime":457.149,"body":"rural communities and they ensure rural"},{"startTime":451.769,"endTime":457.149,"body":"vitality, which is critically important"},{"startTime":457.149,"endTime":460.929,"body":"in a country the size of the United"},{"startTime":457.149,"endTime":460.929,"body":"States, where we seem to be ever more"},{"startTime":460.929,"endTime":463.559,"body":"divided between rural and urban centers."},{"startTime":464.789,"endTime":468.009,"body":"About 25 years ago, the forest"},{"startTime":464.789,"endTime":468.009,"body":"products industry went through a"},{"startTime":468.009,"endTime":472.159,"body":"major restructuring and land that had"},{"startTime":468.009,"endTime":472.159,"body":"been held for over a century by the"},{"startTime":472.159,"endTime":476.379,"body":"large vertically integrated pulp and"},{"startTime":472.159,"endTime":476.379,"body":"paper companies came on the market."},{"startTime":476.879,"endTime":480.089,"body":"In all, over 90 million"},{"startTime":476.879,"endTime":480.089,"body":"acres of land was sold."},{"startTime":480.099,"endTime":485.199,"body":"It was the largest private transfer of"},{"startTime":480.099,"endTime":485.199,"body":"land in the history of the United States."},{"startTime":485.209,"endTime":488.339,"body":"It was like a tidal wave and"},{"startTime":485.209,"endTime":488.339,"body":"the conservation community"},{"startTime":488.689,"endTime":493.439,"body":"was totally unprepared for"},{"startTime":488.689,"endTime":493.439,"body":"that scale of disinvestment."},{"startTime":493.489,"endTime":495.919,"body":"And almost none of those"},{"startTime":493.489,"endTime":495.919,"body":"lands were protected."},{"startTime":497.889,"endTime":502.919,"body":"Today, we still lose about a million acres"},{"startTime":497.889,"endTime":502.919,"body":"a year of these intact working forests."},{"startTime":502.919,"endTime":504.999,"body":"And keep in mind, these"},{"startTime":502.919,"endTime":504.999,"body":"are not just any lands."},{"startTime":505.029,"endTime":509.159,"body":"These are the lands that provide us"},{"startTime":505.029,"endTime":509.159,"body":"with clean air to breathe, clean
